As you read in the Weekly Volcano, the Squeak and Squawk Music Festival kicked off Thursday. Bands from all over the Northwest and beyond will be stopping in Tacoma to unleash their magic Sept. 12-16. Below is the schedule for Friday, Sept. 13.

All Ages, 6-9 p.m., $7
Library at Sanford and Son
743 Broadway, Tacoma

>>> Carletta Sue Kay

Carletta Sue Kay, the stage name of San Francisco's Randy Walker, is awfully difficult to describe: adorned in a shoddy wig and dress, Walker sings oddly affecting torch songs and Antony Hegarty-esque art-pop.

>>> You Are Plural

Drums, cello, and Wurlitzer organ swirl together in a wave of percussive chamber pop, triumphantly rising and falling in elegant peaks and valleys.

>>> Hands In

This one-man band from Portland creates nervy indie rock with dashes of reverb-soaked psych.

21+, 9:30 p.m., $7
The New Frontier Lounge
301 E. 25th St., Tacoma

>>> Twin Steps

An art-rock outfit from Oakland, CA, Twin Steps take elements of '50s slow dance, soul samples, guitar freakouts, and jumpy indie rock and mixes it all into one deliriously weird soup.

>>> Summer Cannibals

Portland's Summer Cannibals make Ramones-esque punk that's as full of driving energy as it is melodically compelling.

>>> Tangerine

This Seattle band on the rise is led by the beautiful, cooing lead vocal of Marika Che, given musical backbone by virtuosic, sweet-and-salty instrumentation that melts faces when it's not melting hearts.
