A quick definition of letterpress printing: Sharp metal letters are pressed with great force into thick paper, resulting in three-dimensional relief type with touchable, handmade charm. One of Tacoma's print studios, The Arts & Crafts Press, began as a publishing house concerned with the historic Arts and Crafts movement, working with the belief that art is not an object; it is a way of life. "We strive to create things of beauty by using our head, our heart, and our hands," say founders Bruce Smith and Yoshiko. ImPressive. Thanks to Spaceworks Tacoma, you'll have a chance to meet-the-Press as The A&CP relocated to the 1929 Tillicum Toy Company building, bringing with them their 1890s to 1950s printing presses, Yoshiko's blockprint studio and a small showroom where you can browse and shop from their collection of note cards, prints, books, mugs and tiles based on Yoshiko's designs.
