It's a new week, which means it's time for a new installment of Bobble Tiki's South Sound music news and notes column. Without further ado, let's get rolling. ...

Bobble Tiki will be honest. It's a little weird writing to you today. As you know, Bobble Tiki's weekly column hits the Volcano's website on Thursdays, but it's written in the days (or "day," or "moments," really) leading up to Thursday. As Bobble Tiki sits in front of the keyboard, it's T-minus four hours until the start of the Weekly Volcano's extravagant, sure to be at least 80-proof, Best of Tacoma 2010 party at Masa. Basically, that means these words will be crafted today, but by the time you read them, Bobble Tiki may well have made a public fool out of himself by downing six Tecates on an empty stomach in celebration of Best of Tacoma 2010, and later wetting himself on a lonely barstool (yes, it's possible for Bobble Tiki to be completely alone amidst a jam packed crowd of revelers).

Talk about awkward.

Luckily, Bobble Tiki has a higher calling this week. While it's hard for Bobble Tiki to fire himself up knowing this column will likely always be known as "The Column Bobble Tiki Wrote Before Wetting Himself at Masa," he also knows he's been tasked with providing you the inside scoop on this year's Music and Arts in Wright Park Festival, and that's far more important than any bladder issues in Bobble Tiki's imminent future.

Yes, Music and Arts in Wright Park - a T-Town tradition reestablished last year by Cody Foster, Bennett Thurmon, Ken Johnson, Roxanne Wolfe, Donna Herren (and a slew of other helpers) - is back once again, officially scheduled for Wright Park on Saturday, Aug. 21. The Weekly Volcano has engaged in several, highly-covert, beer-stained meetings with the Music and Art in Wright Park brain trust, and we've got the exclusive lowdown on what to expect.

First and foremost (and MOST IMPORTANTLY!), the bands:

  • Stone Axe
  • The Speans
  • Clearcut the City
  • Cody Foster Army
  • Fucking Eagles
  • Gold Teeth
  • Pioneers West
  • James Hunnicutt
  • Twink the Wonder Kid
  • Si Si Si
  • Good Gravy
  • Girl Trouble
  • I-Defy
  • The Dignitaries

No, Tacoma, your eyes do not deceive you. That is, in fact, 15 BIG BANDS! All of them, in a full frontal Tacoma assault, will come at you Aug. 21 at Wright Park - FOR FREE! - between noon and 7:30 p.m.

That's seven and a half hours, 15 bands - you do the math.

(Here's a hint: It works out to awesome.)

Leading up to this year's epic Music and Arts in Wright Park, there are a couple fundraisers also coming your way designed to raise the funds needed to thrown down all this awesomeness, and also raise awareness.

Next Friday, Aug. 6, for example, The Top of Tacoma will hold the first fundraiser, featuring acoustic sets from Dick Ed, Rich Bundy, and Kyong Kim - not to mention a fundraising raffle featuring plenty of sick-ass prizes, and the always amiable and strong pouring Top of Tacoma bartenders. What more do you possible need?

Then, on Saturday, Aug 14, The New Frontier will host the second Music and Art in Wright Park fundraiser, musically calling on the always-awesome Basemint, along with Cody Foster Army and the Speans. It's an outside-the-box bill, sure to deliver the goods, and - once again - all money raised at the door will go to support the free, quintessential Tacoma, music festival goodness heading our way in late August.

This just might be the VERY BEST Music and Art in Wright Park festival ever, people. Bobble Tiki suggest penciling it into your schedule now. You'll feel like a dope if you miss it. Bobble Tiki promises.

See you next week.

Oh, and if you ever find yourself sitting at a barstool next to Bobble Tiki, it might be wise to consider moving.
