Spirits of the Red City to deliver "one hell of a show"

It's been five months since the untimely closing of the underground music venue, The Warehouse. In the months since, Adam Ydstie, Doug Stoeckicht and Katie Lowery - the then-residents and show-producers of the Warehouse - have struck out on their own and started arranging shows at various venues about town.

"We don't want to, necessarily, get pigeonholed into one space," says Ydstie. "The exciting thing is that we did get awarded a space through the Spaceworks Tacoma program that Shunpike and the City of Tacoma and Chamber of Commerce are doing. So, at some point, there's potentially going to be a space granted to us from them for about a six-month period."

In the meantime, many of their shows have been booked at the Peabody Waldorf Gallery, such as their upcoming amazing bill featuring Spirits of the Red City. They will open a night filled with large bands - Spirits is an eight-piece.

Spirits of the Red City make chamber-folk that leans toward the melancholy, though the wall of sound created by the wave of instruments has an uncanny ability to feel spirited even while the voices suggest otherwise.

"They perform all their shows without any amplification," says Ydstie. "We really try to craft our bills when we structure them. This might be one of my favorite lineups."

After Spirits of the Red City will be Dovekins and Paper Bird, two bands that have been getting a bit of attention recently for their playful takes on folk, bluegrass and country. These are bands that value big sounds and lush, full harmonies. These are bands where everyone sings, and it's hard not to get caught up in that energy.

I agree with Adam Ydstie-this is going to be one hell of a show. Let's hope the transient Warehouse can keep it coming.
