THE DAMAGE REPORT: Weekend warrior

Intentional Burn Victim and happy times at the Happy Kymie

By Jason McKibbin on September 28, 2011

Last weekend was a blast! Mine started off Friday at Hell's Kitchen, where I saw Plaster get super heavy and play the most "metal" set I've ever seen the band whip out; they grabbed the crowd by the short ones and didn't let go ‘til the set was done. Mom's Rocket from Olympia showed everyone that A.I.C. style arena rock is NOT a thing of the past. Tacoma's own Mahnhammer jack-hammered the audience into oblivion with a manic stage presence and ear-splitting volume. And just when I thought the show had reached its apex, former Hell's Belles frontwoman Jaime Nova mesmerized the crowd with an incredible vocal performance in Witchburn. Sabbath-y awesomeness as only the Burn can deliver. I am now a proud Burn Victim; I suggest you do the same ASAP.

Saturday my band played a special birthday show for two old friends, Shawna Reed and "Doppy the crazed pyrotechnician" out in Puyallup at a secret party hotspot known as The Happy Kymie. A few hundred loco peeps raged with the bonfire and fireworks as The Coloffs started the night with a kick-ass punky yet mostly rawk set. I Defy (my band) hit the stage next to a roaring crowd and proceeded to rip their faces off between tequila shots and keg cups. Corson Swift played the popular hits to the dancing girls and set the mood for the rest of the awesome night. Levi Lyon showed up with his Party Bus full of rowdy maniacs and more beer! Even Klondike Kate showed up around 3 a.m. (after playing a gig in Seattle), and drummer/vocalist Debbi Needham pounded a borrowed kit bloody even as the rain began to drench all who remained.

UPCOMING NEWS: Local glamsterz The Prophets of Addiction are off on their Italian tour (good luck, fellas!). The Church Of Hate to return soon under a new name and with new sound? (Say it 'aint so!) Infernal Legion and Devils of Loudon both have new material and gigs coming up soon.

And this weekend do not miss legendary punk band NoMeansNo as they triumphantly return to Tacoma's Hell's Kitchen. (Tip: I've never seen NoMeansNo play a show that didn't sell out in this town, so get there early!)
