Sonny Bonoho - one of the few Tacoma artists to break into the underground national hip-hop scene - has been busy preparing new material for this year's SXSW, which is in Austin, Texas March 12-17. I thought it would be a good idea to bring to light what Bonoho has been creating the last few months.

"I have four shows scheduled for SXSW," Bonoho said over the phone. "I have new music I will be debuting that weekend so I am really excited."

Bonoho's music is a one-of-a-kind experience. It is packed with humor, honostly and creativity. Bonoho is a skilled M.C., who sings on many of his tracks. Part of Bonoho's artistry is his outlandish apparel. Often times Sonny will be sporting a crazy combination of pants and shorts and even donning a hilarious coifed up wig.

His most recent video release, "Just Met Her Last Night," is vintage Sonny. The video starts off like the movie The Hangover. Bonoho awakes, passed out in the bathroom, opens his eyes and proceeds to vomit last-night's party into the nearby toilet. Next, he writes his name in a huge mound of booger sugar - then the music starts. Then, the spaced-out clever rhymes about sexing begin. Bonoho is rapping while driving; riding shotgun is also Bonoho dressed in drag. The video includes many people doing lewd acts in animal masks and a big party with appearances from Billy The Fridge, DJ Jusz Nyce and Casey Carter.

When ya watching a Bonoho video or listening to one of his songs, many times ya not quite sure what is happening. His strange jokes and cinematography is crazy and everywhere. That is just like the man's style - and music. He gives ya something totally different every time. There will never be any cookie cutter raps or videos from this guy. That is a good thing in the end. Originality is what is lacking in our music genre. I congratulate Bonoho and urge him to stay on his own off-kilter path. It is paying off for him. Not too many Tacoma artists will have SXSW shows this year.
