It's hard to believe, but it really has been two whole decades since Lakewood first incorporated into a city. That means that right around the time the rest of us were nervously re-spooling our Scotch-taped Tragic Kingdom cassettes with a #2 pencil, ensuring our Jinco pants had the precise amount of ankle fray and crouch-crawling Oddjob around GoldenEye 64 in a ballet of Surge soda-fueled hat-related assault, Lakewood's founders were pursuing decidedly loftier goals. (For the purposes of this article, I'm assuming everyone was 13 in the mid-90s like I was.)

To commemorate Lakewood's 20th birthday, the city's kicking off the second half of its yearlong birthday bash this Saturday. The city held a winter-themed celebration back in February and it was a huge success, and the city hopes that the warmer weather and outdoorsy atmosphere will make the summer party an even bigger hit. "This is more of the summer block-party style celebration," said Brent Champaco, communications manager for the city of Lakewood.

Are you an aspiring gourmand?  Foodies can partake in a panoply of our community's delectable delicatessens at the Mobile Food Fest.  How about a famously mouthwatering burger and fries from Arnold's Happy Days? A taste of the island life from Lumpia World? Some of the ocean's bounty from the Frying Dutchman? And Southwest-style bacon mac and cheese turnovers from Fleischkuechle?

Looking for a show with your meal? Organizers have booked Jeanlizabeth, the Blue Cloud Celtic Band, and festival headliners the Afrodisiacs. Plus, see the stars of tomorrow in a production of High School Musical from Mann Middle School!

There are also games and activities for kids and adults of all ages. Go on an Instagram scavenger hunt, test your knowledge in the pop culture trivia contest, or leave your fortune up to chance in a game of Spin the Wheel. Kids can startle their parents with an air brush tattoo, while parents may startle their kids with an air brush tattoo, too. There's even face painting for the little ones (and big ones) who aren't as daring.  Organizers also have a vintage car show taking place at the event.

The day also starts with a parade featuring drum lines, dance teams and marching bands from Clover Park High School, Lakes High School, and Life Christian Academy.

With the exception of food, everything else is free.

The city of Lakewood's 20th Anniversary Summer Event, Saturday, June 4, 1-6 p.m., Lakewood City Hall, 6000 Main St. SW.  For more information, please visit: www.cityoflakewood.us.
