When you think of shopping in Puyallup, your first thought is likely of South Hill Mall and big box stores - endless big box stores. But don't sell Puyallup short. Downtown Puyallup near the fairgrounds is the farthest thing from a master-planned and commercially developed boomtown. Downtown Puyallup is absolutely adorable and well stocked with antiques, artisans and specialty shops.

South Sound Running

South Sound Running opened its Puyallup location earlier this year, and the store is the place to be if you have a runner (or walker) on your holiday list. You can buy shoes, apparel, accessories and some nifty runner's gadgets from heart rate monitors to GPS devices.  The best gift for any runner may be to bring him or her in to the store for a specialized shoe fitting. Store employees examine foot shape and mechanics to assess exactly which shoes will work best for each runner. 115 S. Meridian

UpCycle Chicks

UpCycle Chicks is run by two women - Charlotte Adams and Cinda Hopper - who take old items and make them new and better. Check out their shop for already finished items, and you'll find cute and classy décor items as well as things that are just plain fun. Want an antique dresser redone in a Seahawks theme? Check and check. The UpCycle Chicks can refinish your old, worn-out pieces for you, too. 108 W. Meeker

Cheese Shoppe

Really, what finer gift could there be than a fine cheese? For the foodies in your life, the Cheese Shoppe is here to ensure they have not just any cheese, but THE cheese. The shop stocks local cheeses, artisan cheeses, and other unique cheese you're unlikely to find anywhere else. 202 S. Meridian

Corkscrew Cellars

If you think that nothing gets better than a cheese shop, just wait. Just up the street from the Cheese Shoppe is its perfect complement - a wine store. It's the only specialty wine store in the area. Perhaps the best (read: most fun) way to choose a wine to gift from Corkscrew Cellars is to come to the store on Saturdays. Each Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. is a complimentary wine tasting. 207 N. Meridian

Dog Daze Natural Pet Market

Have a four-legged friend to shop for? Dog Daze is a market that believes in the wellness of your cats, dogs and small animals. All matter of tasty treats can be found, but Dog Daze also sells more gift-appropriate items - like pet apparel and high-quality toys, including an entire line of doggy chew toys designed to be extra tough for the discerning pup who likes to destroy his toys. If you'd like a photo of your pet with Santa Paws, this is also the place for you. 105 E. Stewart Ave.

Victoria Sells Antique Mall

Downtown Puyallup has a lot in common with Tacoma's Antique Row - namely, antique shops. The largest of these is Victoria Sells Antique Mall, a great place to shop. While you'll find plenty of China sets, old dolls, vintage toys and other things that every antique store in the area sells en masse, Victoria Sells has a pretty nifty selection of archaeological artifacts. Venture upstairs and you'll find arrowheads, Anasazi pottery shards and pots for the history nerd that has everything. Also keep an eye out for a fine selection of old furniture. Other antique shops within walking distance include 3rd Street Antiques, Pioneer Antique Mall, King's Row and Horatio's. 125 S. Meridian
