As the dog days of summer linger on, there is no better time to get out and explore two local trails. And yes Fido can join the family on your adventures as well. 

Some people might not know that behind Dupont City Hall is the entrance to Sequalitchew Creek Trail. Visitors can use the City Hall parking lot to park and then access the trail. This three-mile round-trip trail will have explorers winding through a forested region before spitting them out onto a pebbled beach. 

During the majority of the hike visitors are surrounded by big trees that provide a very shady walking path, and let's be honest, Washingtonions are craving a cool down by now. The trees also allow hikers to spot birds and other wildlife frolicking among them. At the end of the trail visitors will walk under a tunnel that will then lead them out onto a pebbled beach that features unoperated old rail lines and an expansive rocky shoreline. Sweeping views of Puget Sound and surrounding mountains are also a pleasant surprise after the 1.5 miles journey down the trail. This is a great hike to take the entire family on as it's relatively easy and the kids will love exploring the beach at the end. 

Another great easy hike in the area is Lake Waughop tucked into Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood. This nearly one-mile loop trail circles completely around Lake Waughop. And while the lake contains algae and no swimming or water activities are allowed, it's a great shaded path for walking as a family.

A bonus to the trail is that it's paved, meaning the kids can bring their bikes or scooters and you can maybe even get a few laps around the lake in before they get tired or bored. This trail is also dog friendly, but dogs must remain on leash. The trail is located at the back of Fort Steilacoom Park. Either on the way in or the way out, you may want to stop at the large castle park for the kids, or the large dog park for Fido. 

Both trails allow an opportunity to pack a picnic lunch or enjoy on the go. Benches and a gazebo at Lake Waughop are the perfect stopping point. When you make it down to the beach at the end of the Sequalitchew Creek Trail we recommend popping down on the rocky beach, or finding a nearby log to enjoy a packed lunch on.
