Winter has officially kicked off, so it's time to plan adventures outside of the obvious movie marathon and Netflix binge weekends. For those seeking an adventure beyond just a day trip we suggest planning a staycation in the Olympia region.

It's easy to plan a weekend in Olympia despite what the weather conditions may be. If you aren't afraid to brave the elements a bit, try a new trail.  Stay above the mud on boardwalks and paved trails at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, McLane Creek Nature Trail and Chehalis Western Trail.

Check something off your bucket list and plan to visit the Washington State Capitol on your trip. Self-guided tour brochures can be found at the Visitor Information Desk. Plus while you're on the grounds be sure to check out the newly renovated sunken gardens.

Or if you want to go all in, pack waterproof boots and visit Tolmie State Park to puddle jump along the shoreline.

However, if you're looking to stay dry during your staycation, Olympia is chock-full of indoor activities everyone can enjoy.

Release pent-up energy at Defy Olympia, where you can jump on 60-plus trampolines. Or escape the elements and pretend you're on a tropical vacation with a trip to the Great Wolf Lodge water park a little further south near Centralia. Return to the big-screen movie experience at the Yelm Cinemas. Reserve your recliner seat online and kick back with their famous popcorn.

Other rainy day indoor activities include planning a visit to the Hands on Children's Museum where curiosity, creativity and learning through fun is encouraged. Browse through the local shops downtown where the awnings that line the sidewalks will keep you dry. Grab a coffee at Burial Grounds Coffee Collective to enjoy as you stroll downtown.

If you're looking for nighttime entertainment catered more to an adult crowd, attend local live theater. Kicking off Jan. 21, Olympia Little Theater will have Clue on Stage. Kicking off the same weekend, Harlequin Productions will be featuring Murder for Two
