Milton borders fellow sleepy towns Edgewood and Fife just south of Federal Way. This trio of towns boasts lovely residential areas and a great school district within close proximity to "city living" since it's sandwiched between Tacoma and Seattle. To be quite frank, there isn't a whole lot to do recreationally in Milton, which, for many residents, is likely one of its merits. Though there are all of your usual creature comforts, like big chain grocers, banks and dining establishments, it's just a 15-minute commute down I-5 to Tacoma. Here are a few pit stops you can expect to see while journeying to Milton.
[Bites and Brews]
Bud's Bar and Grill in Milton is a family friendly dining establishment serving traditional breakfast entrees beginning at 8 a.m. and a hearty variety of burgers, fish ‘n' chips and steaks for lunch and dinner. Catch the big game and sip on Bloody Marys and Mimosas or toss back an ice-cold brew to accompany the pub-type fare. Open Sundays to Thursdays, 8 a.m. to midnight, and Fridays and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. 2702 Milton Way, Milton, 253.952.7665
[Fashionista Finds]
A super rad consignment store seemed an unlikely find in the Milton area as far as I was concerned, but lo and behold there it was in London Bridge Boutique. This small shop has a fabulous collection of shoes and accessories and nifty threads to boot. The window display lures you in with a phenomenal collection of purses and edgy tops with pops of color. If you're looking to score thrifty swag, this is the place. Open 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., 2105 Meridian Ave. E., Edgewood, 253.219.7820
[Grindheads]
Here's the thing, parents: kids are going to ollie and nosegrind their way through town, and rather than fight it, many towns are giving them a place to do it. Milton is no exception and has concocted Milltown Skate Park. Since 2004, this 7,000-square-foot bowl has allowed skater kids (and kids at heart) a place to practice their moves on ledges, rails and all that jazz. 23rd Avenue and Milltown Way, Milton.
[Park Play]
When the city of Milton hosts community based events, Triangle Park is the destination. This pocket park plays home to Kemper Playfield - a big toy area for the minis - as well as lots of picnic-appropriate grassy areas, a small forested space dead center and lighted tennis courts and small baseball diamond for the athletic types. A newer addition to this site is a lovely memorial to honor veterans, located at the top of the slope. Located between 15th Avenue and Oak Street.
[BONUS]
Readers were asked to name the best, the tastiest, the most fantastic sandwiches in the South Sound during the Weekly Volcano's Tournament of Sandwiches this past spring. Sixty-four sandwiches and three weeks of tournament-style voting later, Oliver's Sandwiches's lobster sandwich was crowned grand champion. 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, 900 Meridian Ave. E., Milton.
