This weekend South Sounders have the opportunity to do two great things thanks to collaboration between Maurice the Fish Records and Fish Food Banks of Pierce County. The product of their concerted efforts is the Fish Food Benefit Concert, which will be held Sunday, June 2 at Louie G's Pizzeria in Fife.

I invite you to come out and enjoy a variety of fantastic local music while simultaneously helping ensure that families in our area facing financial turbulence get the nutritional assistance they need.

In 2012, Fish Food Banks of Pierce County helped 556,298 individuals - a total of 140,414 families in need. This volunteer-driven organization made the most out of its donations last year, distributing $7 worth of food for every $1 donated, and collecting donated food from 125 locations every week.

Maurice the Fish Records began in 2007 to help promote a branch of Fish Food Banks associated with the Kiwanis Club. It held the first Fish Food benefit concert that year - the start of what has become a 6-year tradition. By the 4th year, the event was held at The Swiss, and it is now staged in Fife at Louie G's Pizzeria.

An independent record label of the South Sound, Maurice the Fish Records seeks to maintain its artists' creative vision while giving them a platform from which they can achieve greater recognition for their talents. Official artists include Seven's Revenge and Champagne Sunday - while some "Gen Y," Non-Fish "Fish Picks" include bands previously featured in my all-ages column The Rockford Files such as Nolan Garrett, Oaklawn and Emily Randolph.

This week I spoke with Raymond Hayden, CEO of Maurice the Fish Records, and asked what about the Fish Food benefit concert has allowed for its continued success.

"It's been a success because I've surrounded myself with people who are forward thinking people and care just as much about the community as I do," Hayden said.

The evening will feature 12 bands, including special guest Lynn Sorensen of Bad Company and now Spike and the Impalers. Other performers will include Audentia, Champagne Sunday, Nolan Garrett, Rikk Beatty Band, Tin Man, Kim Archer and Rafael Tranquilino, Mr. Von, Late September Dogs, Heidi Vladyka, Dave Hannon and James Coates.
