It's like money in dog years. For FISH Food Banks of Pierce County, every dollar raised has seven times the buying power. Based on this math, last year's Maurice The Fish Records' (MTFR) benefit concert brought in nearly $50,000 to help feed the hungry.

Taking place this Sunday, June 22, eight bands will take the stage at the all-ages, family friendly afternoon show at Louie G's in Fife. Musical artists span many genres and include: James Coates, Champagne Sunday, Vividal, Moss Brothers, The Approach, Tin Man, Nolan Garrett and Strangely Alright.

The event, now in its seventh year, hopes to raise even more money for FISH Food Banks of Pierce County.

"We would most definitely like to beat last year's amount - we would like to double it," said Raymond Hayden of MTFR. "A lot of people don't realize that the kids are getting free meals at school, then don't during the summertime because they are not in school. At least when they are in school, they're guaranteed one full meal."

In 2012, FISH Food Banks of Pierce County helped 556,298 individuals - a total of 140,414 families in need. Forty percent of the people it helps are under the age of 18.

"Many families are working multiple jobs and still struggle to make ends meet," said Emily Happy, director of development and communication at FISH Food Banks. "Our food banks serve well over half a million people each year. Your support affects real people."

Support comes in many different ways; this event just happens to include musicians, pizza and community. While handing money or cans to an organization has its benefits, having an experience behind the donation, something tangible and memorable, seems to help resonate with the community and the musicians.

"As the community gives to the artists through show attendance, purchasing of CDs and merchandise and general support through funding local festivals," said Hayden. "I believe it is of paramount importance that the artist give back to the community, especially those in need."

Happy said last year's benefit raised enough funds to provide more than 30,000 meals.

"We are indescribably grateful. Months of work and planning goes into putting on a great show. The dedication of Maurice The Fish Records and so many volunteers is inspiring. With such a talented lineup and community support, our goal is to beat that this year," she said. "You might not have an extra billion dollars a year to end world hunger. You might not have extra hours to volunteer in a food bank. But when we all do the little bit that we can, it adds up to make all the difference for families in need."

The event also includes a silent auction, raffle and games.
