Technology is everywhere. Small devices no larger than a deck of cards can monitor heart rates, take vivid pictures, and navigate us to any destination of our choosing. Every task or chore on our to-do list can be completed with the socially recognized phrase "there's an app for that."
For those who are tech-savvy, and for those who wish to delve into the world of up-and-coming technological advancements, the New Tech Tacoma event on Dec. 8 is a great way to get acclimated with the changes that are happening. Located at 1102 A St. #450 in Tacoma from 5 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., the event will have four guest speakers, and will be serving catered food and beverages before the presentations take place. Attendees are also invited to the after-party at The Harmon Tap Room when the main event is over. Tickets are $10 in advance, and $20 at the door.
Although tech is a primary focus of the exchange, the main goal of the event is to bring people together within the community. "We have people coming who want to start companies; we have people who are recruiting; we have people who are already at companies - small or large. It's a broad range of people," said Brett Greene, who is the CEO and Founder of New Tech Northwest.
To punctuate the importance of bringing people together, regardless of their experience level with forms of tech, Greene pointed out the everyday aspects and usage of technology in the modern world. "What we call technology is pretty mainstream. It's not always engineers talking about algorithms; it's things like drones and apps on your smartphone and the kinds of things that are entertaining to learn about."
When asked about the philosophy of the company, Greene described New Tech: "We're a community of smart, fun, interesting people, and it's totally inclusive. The tech aspect of it is kind of a starting point to bring people together. What happens is, interesting and creative people come and meet more people like themselves. Basically, we're a community of people helping people."
This way of thinking, coupled with New Tech's ability to highlight the universality and accessibility of current technologies, serves as the driving force behind hosting events such as the upcoming one. "At the end of the day, it's about good people doing good things and celebrating that," said Greene with a note of finality.
