They may not realize it when they are headed for a station at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, but military members fond of the links now have easy access to world-class golf as part of their privileges. Of course, the Pacific Northwest made golf news when Chambers Bay in University Place hosted the U.S. Open a few years back.

Indeed, throughout our area, we're lucky to have countless high-caliber public and private courses in our backyard. However, active-duty military, Department of Defense employees and veteran golfers can enjoy their favorite pastime on or near base at three exceptional facilities with military affiliations in the immediate neighborhood.

Eagle's Pride Golf Course, DuPont

Laying in the shadow of Mount Rainier beneath towering evergreens, Eagles Pride, south of DuPont, is one of the nicest courses in western Washington. The well-manicured grounds are home to a fair, but demanding, 27-hole course featuring varied terrain and topography, calling for players to use all the clubs in their bags.

While it is open to the public, military rates are steeply discounted at the course, where all levels of play are accommodated with multiple tees on each hole. The facility also features a large, heated driving range with lessons available for all ages. After a practice session or a round, the Samuel Adams Brewhouse -- Eagles Pride is a great spot for a burger, beer or milkshake with views of the 18th hole. I-5 Exit 116, DuPont, 253.976.6522

Whispering Firs Golf Course, McChord Field

With well-groomed, tree-lined fairways, small greens and thick rough -- along with multiple water hazards -- Whispering Firs Golf Course at McChord Field challenges golfers of all skill levels. The par-72, 18-hole layout is open to DoD I.D. cardholders and their authorized guests.

Lessons are available for individuals and groups, and tournament clinics are offered, as well. The course also boasts a fully stocked pro shop with equipment, clothing and accessories.

Before or after a round -- or between nines -- enjoy refreshment and a meal at the Habanero Mexican Grill in the clubhouse. Breakfast and lunch are served daily. 895 Lincoln Blvd. SW, McChord AFB, 253.982.2124

American Lake Veterans Golf Course, Lakewood

Situated amidst varying wooded and open terrain on the lush, lakeside grounds of the Veterans Administration Hospital, the American Lake Veterans Golf Course was designed by famed golfer Jack Nicklaus -- and is entirely ADA accessible.

In fact, when the current configuration of the 18-hole course opened, it was the nation's only golf course designed specifically for rehabilitation of wounded veterans, and today, it features world-class rehab and training facilities behind the scenes.

The course, which winds through oaks and evergreens, isn't strictly reserved for those with disabilities. It is open for play to active-duty military, veterans, dependents, friends and family, but all non-military affiliated players must be sponsored by a military member or vet with proper identification. 9600 Veterans Dr. SW, Lakewood, 253.589.1998
