If you're looking for a weekend getaway, especially if you're an outdoor enthusiast, look no further than Camano Island. Located a two hour drive from JBLM, it's possible to do a day trip, but, if able, it's best to plan a night or weekend getaway to ensure you can explore all there is to see.

When we said this is a must, especially if you're an outdoor enthusiast, we meant it. Start your adventure at Camano Island State Park (state park pass required) where you can walk along the Puget Sound shoreline and take in sweeping views of the Olympic Mountains and Mount Rainier. Also included in the park is a mile of biking trails and three miles of hiking trails. Picnic and day shelters are available on a first come first served basis. Personal watercraft use plus clamming, crabbing and fishing during the specified season dates is also an option when visiting the park. To purchase a license or to read more on the fishing and wildlife regulations be sure to visit https://wdfw.wa.gov/. One-day and annual state park passes can be purchased at automated pay stations at the park, along with boat launch permits.

If you're planning to spend more than just a day on the island, Camano Island State Park has options. This 244-acre camping park has options for tent camping and RV hook-ups. Five 12-by-20 feet cabins are also available for rental. For more information on lodging within the state park visit https://bit.ly/3wxwwxY

Cama Beach State Park's 486-acre waterfront location is connected by a mile long trail to Camano Island State Park. Boat rentals, interpretive programs and events are available on a seasonal basis and schedule. Historic cabins are available to book and are the perfect location, direct beach access. Cama Beach Cafe is a short walk from the cabins and serves up omelets, baked goods and lattes daily during the summer months and weekends only during the other fall, winter and spring months. State park pass required. For more information on the park and to book lodging visit, https://bit.ly/31S40ZZ

Tillicum Beach and Cavalero Beach are smaller beaches that can be explored while visiting the island. It's important to note that both locations have smaller parking lots and private residents along the beach to be mindful of.

When it comes to food on the island there are plenty of delicious options. A personal favorite is Brooklyn Bros. Pizza, located in the Camano Commons Marketplace. This establishment serves up delicious New York Style pizza, salads and calzones.

Camano Commons marketplace area offers great outdoor seating, along with an ice cream shop, Camano Scoopz. A coffee and juice bar are also available as well as a great gift shop to explore gifts and other local goodies.

Camano Island Coffee Roaster and the Baked Cafe are great options to start your morning on the island and then plan to end your day at Ale Spike Camano Island Brewing if visiting Thursday-Sunday, closed on Monday-Wednesday.

Either on your way into, out of town (or both) a must stop is the Cookie Mill in Stanwood. In business since 1986 this drive-thru, yes drive-thru, cookie shop serves homemade cookies right out of their window. Flavors range from chocolate chip to lemon doodle. Gluten free options are available as well. They also serve up coffee and other baked goods and patrons have the option to walk in to the shop as well.

With its large offering of outdoor exploration and great food options, Camano Island truly is a must when stationed at JBLM.
