Wolfgang's Vault

Bill Graham produced more than 35,000 concerts all over the world. His first venue, the legendary Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, was home to many of rock's greatest performers - Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Led Zeppelin - and the list goes on and on.
Graham taped thousands of live performances and stored the tapes in his basement. These tapes and the concerts they captured lay dormant until the Bill Graham archive was acquired by Wolfgang's Vault (Bill Graham's given first name was Wolfgang) in 2003.
Vault Radio is now playing selected tracks from these concerts in an FM-quality, 128K digital radio stream. Check it.

Sir Duke

Duke's Chowder House will open in the old Luciano's Casino location on the Ruston Way waterfront in early May. It will be good to have another choice down there, plus we really miss sipping cocktails on the deck in the summer. Miss Megan will sling a tasty plate of fresh seafood and tell you  a witty joke, too.  - Ginger Knoxx

Seems like I talk too much

GingerknoxxSo here's the deal: I didn't do a dang thing last week. What kept me home, you ask? Two things - love and exhaustion. Let's deal with exhaustion first. I'm talking about the mental kind. Have you ever talked and talked until you're just out of stuff? Well, I'm there. Not that I haven't enjoyed all of the conversations I've had or the people I've talked to, I just wanted to take some time to be quiet, and that's hard to do in a bar and surrounded by people, you know. And then there's love. The scorned will scoff; the bitter will snarl. I'm with ya, but man it's a good feeling to have and worth hanging on to if you and your partner are worthy. And that translates - suddenly - into having a really good time with a couple (did I just say couple?) bottles of wine, parking your booties in front of the soul sucker (television) and getting a kick out of how truly bad American television has become.
So where does that leave us? Does this mean I am growing up? Gawd, I hope not. Will I continue squandering my hard earned cash in the pursuit of a good time, good convo and good company? Yes, please. Just probably not as often. So instead of hearing about my running 'round town last week, eating rich food, listening to music, checking out art and guzzling killer cocktails, let's talk about some of the other rad people and places around that make Tacompton and beyond as cool as it is. That's what you all enjoy, right? Seeing your name in print and giggling about it. Yeah, me too.
Shall we begin?
Ross Eckers, who acts as security (and beefcake) at Hell's Kitchen and road manager for metalicious 3 Inches of Blood, has just been given the sweet offer to be the road manager for Exodus. How many black T-shirts do you think he owns?
The sultry good looks of Miss Adrianne can be found behind the bar at Tempest Lounge on Saturday nights as she joins the Tempest family. I know there are usually few places to go and things to do Sunday evenings, so you'll be glad to know you can now add Tempest to that short list. Miss Adriane will be pouring the drinks that night as well. Did I mention Tempest's red felt covered pool table or the intimate patio in the back?
And just around the corner, the Monsoon Room has been having the occasional night of live music, typically tied in with Third Thursday. Other nights you can experience the musical whimsy of DJ JoMama, Uncle Eli and others. It's always free. Ultra hip girl Johanna Gardner has taken up bartending at Monsoon as well. She's one of the folks putting on the Urban Art Festival this summer.
Shakabrah Java has an open mic on Wednesday that's been attracting some very talented kids. Take the young Tommy Dean, the teen-age musical prodigy. I remember him from when he played opening slots at the Shoboat before it went down and seeing his band play The Swiss. This kid had an amazing grasp of old-time blues, even emulating the stance and facial expressions of some of the greats while doing blues covers. He's a bit older now, and as he puts it: "I've run through the blues. I spent my time with the blues, and now I've been writing my own stuff." I was lucky enough to listen to one of his originals as he spontaneously offered to play a song for me outside in front of Jazzbones after the Shakabrah jam ended.

I was like, good gracious McCabe's is bodacious

Natasha_1Outside of Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson, there really isn't anything I like about country music. Adventures, however, I do like, which is how I found myself at McCabe's American Music Bar in Tacoma.
A good outfit for the night is critical. I haven't missed the Ellensburg Rodeo since I was 19, so I have some sagebrush flair. Really, any Bohemian mama who doesn't have a cowgirl thing or two is probably no friend of mine. I'll be honest: In my rodeo belt buckle and urban cowboy boots, I'm no Shania Twain, but she's from Canada anyway.
The attire at McCabe's is interesting: both terrifying and tantalizing. Red pants aren't unheard of, and there just aren't enough rhinestones in the world. Some of the cowboys probably could've used a little more bull riding exercise. Camouflage vests from Sportco are a must. However, several of the gals looked downright adorable in their sassy negligees, jeans and boots. Plus, I still contend that there's something intimidating about a good-looking man in a striped shirt, cowboy hat and Wranglers. Phew!
You can tell right away that McCabe's has devoted regulars because they all seem to know each other. If you're not used to large crowds, I recommend a shot to take the edge off. There's an overwhelming amount of testosterone there - down, cowboy, DOWN!
There's also some sage advice bantered about from the womenfolk, like: "I should've left that husband of mine a long time ago."
Ordering drinks at McCabe's is surprisingly civilized. People patiently wait in one single file line for cocktails. While Candy the bartender is fantastic, I wish I could add two more of her to spread the crowd along the bar and make the process move quicker. But maybe that's just the drunk in me talking.
At 9 p.m., be prepared to take your hat off as the entire crowd faces the flag and the DJ plays the national anthem. Those who act up during the anthem are thrown out on their lips by the giant door guys - no, really. Also, don't be surprised if people shhhh you when you laugh and talk about how that's one of the weirdest bar rituals you've ever seen.
People at McCabe's take America seriously.
The establishment has the best social arrangement of any place I've seen in Tacoma. Every table around the perimeter has a view of the enormous dance floor in the middle. At first glance, you'd think it's a revolving dance floor, but that's just the couples two-steppin' in perfect unison.
At 11 p.m., the DJ takes an unexpected turn; he starts playing hip-hop. Seriously, the $5 cover is worth the cost of admission just to see Wrangler butts goin' nuts over Nelly's "Hot in Herre."
The bottom line? Saving a horse and riding a cowboy isn't such a bad idea.
Giddyup!

Take us for a ride

Exgirl2Ex-Girl (From Japan) will play Olympia's The Clipper April 16.  According to Audrey Henley at Pioneer Music, "the last time they played in Olympia they  took us on  a trip to outer space in their rock ship: one of the best shows ever to happen in Olympia say some!"
Nice!
The cover is $7 at the door. - Brad Allen

Save a chick, eat a rabbit

Easter lovers get your yolks a runnin'! All early indications on the foodie frontier point toward a flavorful holiday.  The bakers at Great Harvest Bread Company in Univeristy Place's Green Firs Shopping Center are preparing whole wheat honey bread loaves shaped like bunny rabbits.  While you are there, take home some apple-cinnamon bread. It's my favorite. - Jason de Paul.

TombrosseauTom Brosseau has been recording since 2002.  The singer/songwriters 2005 release, What I Meant To Say Was Goodbye, on the Seattle-based Loveless Records was a hit with critics and fan alike.  With the demand for more material at a fever pitch, Brosseau and Loveless are re-issuing The Blue Record now simply titled Tom Brosseau.  The disc contains 10 previously out-of-print songs recorded in San Diego, California at the Gregory Page home studio.
