'King and I' replaces 'Cats'

The Tacoma Musical Playhouse intended to show Andrew Lloyd Webber's classic "Cats" this summer.  However, according to a TMP press release, "The licensing company of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s "Cats" recently restricted the performing rights of the show due to a professional tour coming to Seattle."
Bummer.
The playhouse will show "The King and I" instead, opening July 7 and running through Aug 6.  For tickets, call (253) 565-6867 or visit their Web site. â€" Ken Swarner

Cheap ass drinks at the Loft

Bobble Tiki recently visited a local grocery store and saw 20-somethings buying 30-packs of fizzy yellow swill beer! What the hell are you doing?!
OK, now that Bobble Tiki has calmed down a bit, it’s time for his classic public service announcement: Thirty-packs are whack!
Yeah, Bobble Tiki understands that some of you are broke, and that you want to get your money's worth. And he understands that some of you simply don’t know any better. But what you may not realize is this: For less money you can get all whack on something that tastes good. There’s no need to dump sub-par “beer” down your throat. It’s just not cool.
So get your dress coded ass over to the Loft tonight for 50 cent drinks in its upstairs lounge.  You have to have a VIP bracelet whatever the hell that is.  The downtown Tacoma nightclub expects a line forming around 10 p.m. so get there early. â€" Bobble Tiki

Harry & the Potters

Harrythepotters Tacoma Public Library reports: Indie punk rockers Harry & the Potters are featured in a free two-hour, all-ages-concert Tuesday, July 18, 8 p.m. at Tacoma's downtown Main Library (1102 Tacoma Avenue South).  Opening for the Potter-centric group is Draco & the Malfoys.
Touring public libraries and bookstores across the country via The Potter Mobile â€" a silver 1998 Ford minivan with a lightning bolt emblazoned on the hood - the duo's mix of simple melodies and charmingly quirky lyrics delight youngsters, teens and even adults who remain fascinated with J.K. Rowling's boy wizard.
Their three CDs include original tunes such as "Save Ginny Weasley," "Gryffindor Rocks," and "The Dark Lord Lament."
For more information telephone the Tacoma Public Library at (253) 591-5666 or check it out online.

Queensryche's gotta gun

The Gauntlet reports: QUEENSRŸCHE frontman Geoff Tate has issued the following update regarding the recent report that the entire band was arrested on June 11 at the Amsterdam, Netherlands, airport for allegedly smuggling illegal firearms:

  • "What a day! At the airport in Amsterdam, we were all lined up at the ticket counter checking in for the flight to Oslo. The 35 pieces of luggage to check were being lined up and I turned to Adam, our tour manager, and whispered 'Remember, there's a gun in our bags,' referring to the replica Glock 45 handgun that we use on stage. In a second of confusion, he says to the ticket agent, 'Oh, yeah, not to worry but we have a gun in this suitcase. Before he could explain that it wasn't a real gun but a replica, airport police swarmed in on us and the questioning began. Apparently, unknown to us, any gun, whether real or fake, is highly illegal in Holland. Quick-thinking Adam realized that this was suddenly getting ugly and that we might get detained and miss the flight, thus putting the show in Oslo in jeopardy. He instantly informed them that the bag in question was his. Before I could blink, they arrested him and took him away. More story here.

Syren Lounge after action report

Syren Lounge & Nightclub (1117 Tacoma Ave., downtown Tacoma) opened for business with a private party last night after the months and months we waited for this swanky, hip spot to further liven up Tacoma.  The Weekly Volcano's own Ginger Knoxx was there teasing Natasha for taking the bus to work today (cat fight).  Volcano's Dame of Advertising, Tabitha, gave high marks to Syren â€" she especially loved Syren's signage, the psychodelic wall, and the outrageaous sound system.  I, on the other hand, hit on the pretty ladies (shocker for me that Chad, Syren's owner, invited his whole family â€" I hope there's no hard feelings).  Tonight is opening night for the masses â€" see ya there at 8 p.m. for the free musical stylings of The Lost Boys, Gene Lee, Sean Majors and DJ dAb. â€" Brad Allen.
