Blabbermouth reports: Epic Records has announced a Sept. 5 release date for Revelations, the highly anticipated new album from multi-platinum rock band Audioslave.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone.com, guitarist Tom Morello described the record as "Led Zeppelin meets Earth, Wind and Fire," adding that it's a "big hard rock record with a funky bottom." Among the album's many highlights is the groove-driven lead single, "Original Fire," and "Wide Awake," about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. "It's probably Audioslave's most political song to date," says Morello.
The Grammy-nominated quartet (vocalist Chris Cornell, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk) recorded Revelations at Henson Studios in Los Angeleswith acclaimed producer Brendan O'Brien. O'Brien, whose myriad credits include Pearl Jam and Bruce Spingsteen, mixed Audioslave's Out of Exile record and the Live in Cuba CD and DVD. His history with the band goes back even farther, as he produced Rage Against The Machine albums Evil Empire (1996), The Battle of Los Angeles (1999) and Renegades (2000) and mixed Soundgarden's Superunknown (1994).

antiMusic reports: The Mars Volta has announced the tracklisting to their forthcoming album Amputecture. A solid release date is not yet known but they are expected to release it around the time they hit the road with the Red Hot Chili Peppers Aug. 16 in Salt Lake City.
The band also announced that they have enlisted artist Jeff Jordan to design the album cover.

There are certain things you can count on.  Every year you'll have to pay taxes.  Every year Santa Claus will stuff his fat ass down your chimney - unless you don't believe in obscene consumption in the name of commercialism, that is. And every year the Olympia Strange Music Society will gather a wild and raucous mix of performers, bring them to Oly for three days, and call it the Olympia Experimental Music Festival.
This year the action will happen June 23-25.
"The Olympia Strange Music Society was founded in 1995 by Arrington de Dionyso and Jim McAdams, two KAOS DJs who agreed that while Olympia was certainly a fertile ground for independent rock music, there were other genres of very visceral music that were under-represented in the 'scene,'" states the Web site.
"What is Experimental Music?  The Olympia Experimental Music Festival does not concern itself with answering this question directly, but each year presents a very diverse group of performers, each with their own very different approach to working with sound and performance," the Web site explains.
For the record, when they say "diverse" they mean it.  If you're into strange, this festival is right up your alley. If you're into unconventional noise, this festival is for you.  If you often look at your collection of pots and pans, and think, "Gee, I could make one hell of a racket with those," this is your festival.
According to Dionyso, this year's event will feature Maher Shalal Hash Baz, a Japanese act usually described as creative visionaries.  There aren't many words that can do these guys justice.  They jumble elements of folk, psychedelia, and free jazz into their concoction, achieving a surprisingly fluid sonic daiquiri, although bandleader Tori Kudo has been quoted as saying "I am punk."  It's something you have to see and hear to comprehend.  A list of some of the performers is below. â€" Matt Driscoll

Regina Spektor, Begin to Hope (Sire, 2006)
I don't claim to know what's good for you.  I am not, I repeat, NOT a doctor.  But there's a little something I think you should add to your diet, somewhere between the stale gas station burritos and PBR tallboys.  It â€" or she, as the case may be â€" is Regina Spektor. 
Before I heard her I expected to hate her.  All right, I wanted to hate her.  I only knew the photos - those big blue eyes and pouty lips, her itty-bitty self in front of a gigantic piano.  So Spektor plays the piano and sings.  Yawn.  Does she think she's Fiona Apple or something?  <br>I wanted to hate her, but I couldn't, because the fact is she has talent.  Not only does she have amazing pipes and mad piano skills, but she has pretty little ankles tantalizingly on display in the CD booklet. 
While I listened to Begin to Hope, Spektor's latest record, I dreamed of grabbing her by her classically trained hand and dragging her far away from the torture device that is the drum machine.  I'd plunk her down in front of a bass player and a sweaty punk rock drummer and let her belt her sassy, insane lyrics over that noise.  Thankfully the synthetic drumming pollutes only a couple of tracks, and either way, Spektor is a powerhouse.  Despite its unimaginative name, overall Begin to Hope is a dazzling display of Spektor's strange and striking brand of anti-folk music.   
Why should you trust my opinion?  Well, I saw you buying peach-colored pills off some big guy at the last Who Cares show, and I figure I'm at least as trustworthy as he is.  Like I said, I'm no doctor, but I'm pretty sure that dude was no pharmacist. â€" Jennifer Boutilier
