Are certain restaurant spaces jinxed? Is it true that no matter how good a proprietor's intentions may be, his or her restaurant will fail because it's in a space occupied by a string of failures? Take, for example, Vive Bene in Lakewood. This Italian-ish lunch and dinner house recently opened serving decent food. It's a great place for lunch. There's no reason they can't make it as a business. And yet, this space has seen a number of train wrecks â€" scandals, divorce, bankruptcies.
Will Vive Bene fall victim to the same specters? I hope not.
My recent lunch was a pleasant experience. The lasagna was meaty and firm, the service excellent, and the portion sizes large. They open at 6 a.m. with morning coffee, and stay open to 9 p.m. serving a menu mostly of pasta, salads and sandwiches with a few interesting seafood selections. I plan to go back. I hope they are still there when I do. 11126 Gravelly Lake Drive SW, Lakewood. (253) 588-1239. â€" Jason de Paul
