Free wine today

The wine guys (winos?  winers?  What's the right term?) at Water to Wine (9014 Peacock Hill Ave., Gig Harbor, (253) 853-9463) are pouring (complimentary) two whites and two reds from 3-6 p.m. today. â€" Jason de Paul
Here's what they're pouring (in their words):

Firriato Grillo ’04, $14.99

This is the quintessential summer wine for sipping on the deck or pairing with light fish and poultry dishes.  It’s crisp and clean with more body and flavor than a pinot grigio.

Isenhower Snapdragon ’05, $18.99

This wine sells out quickly every year.  It is a blend of Roussane and Viognier, but don’t let the grape names scare you off.  I think this wine will appeal to Chardonnay drinkers who have tired of Chardonnay, but still want a white that has more body than pinot gris or sauvignon blanc.

Dominio de Tares ‘Baltos’ Bierzo ’04, $13.99

Bierzo is one of my favorite new regions in Spain.  The wines are made from a grape called Mencia, which is thought to be related to Cabernet Franc.  The wines have some mineral quality and spice that I find immensely appealing and are really great with grilled meats.

Domaine de L’ Ameillaud ‘Carainne’ Cotes-du-Rhone ’04, $17.99

Cotes-du-Rhones are my go-to-wines for all kinds of occasions.  They can be simple everyday table wines or full-bodied bruisers to enjoy with a steak.  This one is a blend of Grenache and Syrah and is on the bigger side.  Lots of fruit, spice and some good structure.

The Scuzztones and Jason Outler

The Scuzztones don't play shows very often, so take your booty down to Olympia and check out the action tonight at McCoy's Tavern with The Dirty Birds and All American Playboys in the opening ceremonies of Lakefair weekend. Consider this your personal invitation. Also this Friday, The Harmon Brewing Co. is holding a benefit event for Jason Outler's lovely 3-year-old daughter, Avery. Outler was slain on the Fourth of July. Show up for live music and dump your wallet into the donation box. This is the one thing you can do this weekend that will truly make you feel good. â€" Ginger Knoxx

Core of the sun

Jeffersonpark It’s hot.
Like, Africa hot.
We’re driving down the road, the kid is whining, I’m sweating despite the A/C and I decide â€" It’s wading pool time!
The kid decides it sounds like a good idea, but chickens out as she sees the crowd at Tacoma's Jefferson Park wading pool, which has recently reopened after super-cool renovations.  The super-cool playground equipment is like the stuff at the Kidzone at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, only without the sprinklers and goats.
We can’t go to the Kidzone right now, since Zoobilee’s set to happen tonight (I’m going! I’m so stoked!) so here we are.  At the park.  In 90-plus degree heat.  Sweating.  Looking at the water.  She gets brave, and sticks in her feet, I get brave, and wade in up to my knees, drowning my innocent jeans-cuffs.
But Golly-gee-whiskers, does that water feel freaking great.
(For nowâ€"I’m off, to get dressed and ready to schmooze with the gala-ites.) â€" Jessica Corey-Butler

Weekly Volcano hangs at Zoobilee

ZoobillethreeZoobileetwoZoobileeone Possibly, I started things off slightly poorly by not confirming the start time for Zoobilee.  At 6 p.m., when the mate and I arrived at the parking lot â€" the whistlingly empty parking lot â€" we pulled out our tickets, read the start time, and quickly went to the place with, to our mind, the best noshies, ever: Six Olives, Sixth Ave, since we had roughly 90 minutes to kill slowly.  We had our dipping fries with wasabi aioli-fix, and went back to the point, to await our shuttle chariot (a school bus, air conditioned, thanks be to all omnipotent god-types.)
Crowds, lines, drinks, crowds, food, and a couple of drinks later, I could focus on The Event.  Music.  Happy people.  Fake boobs â€" lots of ‘em.  Happy dresses encasing the fake boobs.  Cool dresses, dresses I wanted. Turns out, Tacoma’s glitterati are kinda’ normal, really.  As the evening progressed, they walked less stably, they smiled more readily, and they smiled more warmly.
“Black tie” would seem a relative term to the boys at Zoobilee.  A bright smoking jacket, several kilts, shorts, Vans, flip flops.  As you went down the outfit, the “dress” deteriorated, if you were savvy. Women picked up on this â€" if they had read the invitation or attended previously â€" and shod themselves accordingly.
For those of us who hadn’t, or weren’t, we either started drinking heavily to alleviate the pain, or in my case, took off our shoes when appropriate.  In the case of some, shoes came off after imbibing heavily.
So here’s the fun part.  The main stage, the one by the aquarium (was it called the dolphin stage? The shark stage? Or somesuch? Friend-boy mate-type took my program, so I don’t know) had a heeee-oooge dance floor.  Walking by it around 10 p.m., I went, mmph.  That has got to be the saddest dance floor I have EVER seen.  Couples stood around on it, looking awkward.  I think I heard the dance floor weeping.
At about 10:30, Hit Explosion grabbed the stage.  They were uh-MAZE ing.  Butts began moving, girls squealed and grabbed unwilling or willing mates, or unwilling or willing girlfriends, and people of all ages got their groove on.  I can’t say that in my life I have ever seen such a seething dance floor, ever.  And I was around when Drakes (the Drake?) was big.  I was at the Loft when it first opened, when those crowds hopped.  Nope â€" nada, no comparison. It was a neat-o mosquito moment, sans biting buggers.
It was a good night. (And I haven’t even mentioned the legend of the elephant walk, or the photo booths, or the weird performance art stuff.  Trust me, when I say it was groovy.  Or go buy tickets for next year!)
I must say, the zoo puts on a good party, and the partiers know how to appreciate it.
Viva la Zoo! â€" Jessica Corey-Butler

Twisty Cup pro-Am

I want to learn how to blow glass, not just for practical purposes; I want to make intricate glass sculptures that will still be around when the rest of us are living on Mars.
I'll will watch the professionals tomorrow at the Twisty Cup Pro-Am competition.  I'm an AM so maybe I can squeeze in.

  • Exit133.com reports: The Third Annual Twisty Cup Pro-Am competition at M-Space is Sunday, July 23rd â€" tomorrow. It’s a down-and-dirty competition to see which glassblower can make the best dainty little Venetian-style ridged cup in 10 minutes or less. See the best, and the rest, complete to see “who is the ultimate maestro of the twisty cup.” Full story here.

Thanks Exit 133! â€" Suzy Stump

Chopstix Industry Night

Chopstix Dueling Piano Bar now has an Industry Night on Sunday evenings hosted by DJ Jason LeMaitre, who promises to play tribal and trance selections from his private stock of tracks. Could be some gems he's stashed away. The drink special of the night â€" a Superman made with vanilla, orange and raspberry vodka and a blast of energy drink â€" will be up for the gulping for $5. Swing on in and check it out. At the very least, there will be eye candy to look at. And in case anyone forgot, Jazzbones offers half off all drinks to service industry employees all night on Wednesdays. â€" Ginger Knoxx

License to sing

Blabbermouth reports: MI6.co.uk reports that Audioslave/ex-Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell has told a Finnish newspaper that he has written the theme song to the 21st James Bond film "Casino Royale."
Cornell will also perform the title track. This would make him the first male lead vocalist to perform a 007 song since A-HA in 1987 for "The Living Daylights."  Full story here. â€" Brad Allen
