Imagine a piano

By weeklyvolcano on May 6, 2007

Somewhere in Olympia, a piano famous for being a conduit for brilliance â€" John Lennon composed Imagine on it â€" will make an appearance next week, and a pianist and lyricist will play "Imagine," as well as a song commemorating the reason behind the piano’s appearance at said house.

Steve Schalchlin, who helped co-author off Broadway musicals “The Last Session” and “The Big Voice” will also play a piece written for the homeowners who will receive the inanimate celebrity.

George Michael bought the piano at an auction in 2000.  With his partner, they’ve taken on a project that promotes peace and acceptance at various stops; the Olympia home was that of a victim of hate crimes that led to his suicide.  Eventually the IMAGINE Piano Peace Project may become a book of photos and a video documentary, with proceeds going to charity.

At this time the Olympia resident wants to remain anonymous, although it looks like the cats out of the bag. â€" Jessica Corey-Butler

Editor's note: The piano just won't stop.  After coming here to play Lennon's piano, Schalchlin woke up in the middle of the night with a song in his head, and he couldn't go back to sleep until he wrote it down. Now he's posted a You Tube video with the new song as background to videos taken here that day.
