Bobble Tiki likes crappy food â€" you know what that means?  He can find pleasure at El Gaucho or DQ. Bobble Tiki likes crappy television â€" you know what that means? He doesn’t have to pop for HBO.

Bobble Tiki’s life is all together happier because he has no taste. It’s a trade off he is happy to make.

Mary Meacham is hoping to open her very first, and very own Mary's Burger Bistro on Monday, Aug. 20, starting at lunchtime. Mary and her crew have done a stellar job of rehabilitating the building at 2301 Pacific Ave. It's now bright red (my favorite color) and adorable with accent lighting and a gorgeous vintage sign from the outside. You really can't miss it. Peering in I can see what looks like a classic, cozy, little burger haven. If they put as much love into their burgers as they have into the building, this business will have me eating cheeseburgers in the paradise that I call Tacoma every single day.

Spanish language talk and Latin music have joined forces, now that Lakewood-based AM talk radio station KLAY has added local Spanish teacher, Plinio Gutierrez Delgado to its weekend program lineup.   â€œSabado Latino” began airing on Saturdays from 7:05 to 9 p.m. some two months ago, with Delgado as its inaugural host.  The program’s format is a hybrid of traditional talk and more entertainment-oriented music programming.

“KLAY opened the door to the possibility of starting a show for the Latino community,” Delgado explained, “due to the growing number of Hispanic people in our area.  And we thought that it was a good time to be start building a bridge between the Hispanic community and the general English speaking population.”

The “we” to whom Delgado referred is the Delgado family.  The “Sabado Latino” team includes Plinio as host, joined by Carol Seymour, Delgado’s wife, who serves as marketing director for the operation.  The ensemble also includes Delgado’s 15 year-old stepson, Alex Benzegala, program technician and board operator, and 10 year-old son, Gubidxa Gutierrez, whose contributions range from graphic design to voicing commercials, to running errands for the family enterprise.

Delgado himself was an elementary school teacher in his native Mexico.  He later taught in Seattle for some 10 years before becoming a Spanish teacher at Charles Wright Academy in University Place.  He has been on the Charles Wright faculty for five years. 

Delgado describes “Sabado Latino” as a variety show, following a hybrid format that combines news with interviews featuring local Hispanic community leaders, as well as social service and immigration experts, and local Latino performing artists.  Music programming completes the two hour weekly format.

“Pierce County’s Hispanic population has grown rapidly over the past few years and I believe that my community needs to be better informed about the local resources available to them and how to access them,” Delgado said.  “Also, the community needs to be well informed about topics that are important to us…and I think that it’s very important to educate my community, not just to keep it entertained.”   Recurring conversation topics include education among local Latino youth, immigration and crime.

“But I also enjoy playing music,” Delgado said.

MUSIC: Like most red blooded Americans, Bobble Tiki likes nothing more than a good old fashioned summer camping trip. When Bobble Tiki was young, this meant loading up the station wagon with his parents and siblings, and heading out into the woods for a weekend of dusty boogers and mosquito bites.

Things have changed, however, and these days Bobble Tiki likes his camping trips to be more like the annual Helsing Junction Sleepover. Put together by the people at K Records and the Helsing Junction Farm â€" a Community Supported Agriculture near Rochester.

It's more than a camping excursion, it's an experience.  Here's a look at what's in store:

You could condense Tim Kapler’s recent opening at Sanford & Son into two words: talent, and love.

There was talent on view, despite Kapler’s vehement pooh-pooh’s that he had none.

Thing is, the graphic designer/cum UWT â€"AV dude has an ability to take a square head and take it totally beyond square headishness; to take a 2D idea and make them move on a canvas.

I was confused.

I knew Tim back in the day when he suspended a rubber duck via a string by its neck for the UWT Ledger, and called it "Pointless."

I knew Tim as a really quiet mellow dude who did AV for my school and who did some cool random artistic stuff, but not as an artist, per se.

I knew Tim as the guy who showed up in Kulture Lab shows, whose POINTLESS columns I occasionally saw, and it was good.

His new show, which hangs through September’s second Thursday, shows the side of Kapler  that makes me tingle to see: there’e talent in his blockhead guys, from the vibrant play of  background to figure, to the heavy-handed, light-hearted play of subject matter itself  here’s the gun â€" index finger â€" there’s the sprayed brains â€" colorful, green yellow orange, on brown.

The opening event showed love in the crowd, present: I saw Hogbot afficionados, I saw Kulture Lab-ers. I saw Tim’s mom, dad, sister, nephew, niece; I saw Gretchen and Mindy who stuck him into the space in the first place.

I saw a segment of the crowd unfamiliar to me, though it was doubtless an Third Thursday Art Walk crowd, in and out, in and out.  I saw Kapler himself, smiling, amazed.
I saw me, smiling, amazed: dude.  The stuff on the wall is good. 

Crazy good.

I saw me chucking, to myself â€" Dude.  Kapler’s crazy good.

See it.  Tell me I’m wrong.  I’ll argue.

What the Glass Roots Arts Festival lacked in crowd size yesterday, it made up in heart, with an intimate setting that belied the size of the area (Court D, between 11th and 13th streets) and the wide range of activity that took place there.

I was most impressed with the 2FtCrew’s work on the Embellish building â€" not quite so purple anymore! â€" and the musical stylings on the stage â€" not so loud as to overpower the conversations, but nice to listen to.

It actually worked out as the perfect all-family event, and I was happy to see Volcano scribe Angela Jossy and her not so little kid on stage, Trish Lecy-Davis’ daughter and her entourage, as well as Lisa and Abby McDermott, book lovers about the town.  Of course it was also fun to see my Hogbot friends and Tim Kapler, as well as a few of the usual art-festival suspects (Hey Houston, Hey Ann!), but then it was cool also to see faces I didn’t have names for, with pugs and babies in backpacks.

I like perusing the booths, ranging in wares from cultural art to spray-can canvases, glass ware from Tacoma Glassblowing, jewelry, and even metal art as décor.

The Gig Harbor Folk Festival returns to its namesake community for a two day spread of life folk music beginning Aug. 25.   Performances at this, the third annual staging of the festival, begin at 11 a.m. and run until 10 p.m. both days, regardless of the weather.   Booked performers include Rachel Harrington, Sammy Barrett, and Steve Stefanowicz, among other. 

Prices are $20 for one day, $30 for the full two day performance schedule, with preferred lawn seating available.

The Weekly Volcano has update its Web Site replacing its Louiefest cover story with a look at the Tacoma Community House.

Still going strong since it began offering services to community newcomers in 1910, Tacoma Community House, 1314 S. “L” St. in Tacoma’s Hilltop district, offers, under one roof, a broad menu of programs and services in basic education, life skills development, employment assistance, multi-lingual assistance and immigration help.  It provides those services to clients who have come to Tacoma from countries around the world.
