Cans From Around the World

Good beer is as welcome at a wedding as it is at a barn dance, elegant as a tuxedo, and familiar as faded overalls.

There’s only one minor problem with good beer. Good beer is hard to find in a can.

Let's face it, Tacoma is one place where beer in a can makes sense. The average long-neck bottle, no matter how well engineered, will tip over as you speed away from the Ruston Police. Ever used a bottle opener after running away from characters at Ninth and Commerce? Of course not.

Tacoma Beer Society attempts to solve this problem by hosting Cans From Around The World Wednesday, Aug. 22 at Cans in downtown Tacoma.  For $10, you can sample eight cans of beer in 4-ounce increments.  The cans pop open at 6:30 p.m. â€" Brad Allen

Breakfast with Bobble Tiki

THE DAILY WORD
Learn it, use it, spell it

Bilious \BIL-yuhs\, adjective:

1. Of or pertaining to bile.
2. Marked by an excess secretion of bile.
3. Pertaining to, characterized by, or affected by gastric distress caused by a disorder of the liver.
4. Appearing as if affected by such a disorder.
5. Resembling bile, especially in color.
6. Of a peevish disposition; ill-tempered

USAGE EXAMPLE: Bobble Tiki can’t be certain, but based on the taste and texture of the liquid that rushed up the back of his throat and flooded his mouth upon hearing of the Bush Administrations adamant fight to stop individual states from expanding the Children’s Health Insurance Program, Bobble Tiki is pretty sure the liquid was bilious.

THE MORNING NEWS

HURRICANE: Dean, Dean, the prancin’ machine.

SUMMIT: The U.S. security sandwich.

GAMBLING: Toilet, toilet, toilet â€" loser!

DAD: That’s the way they became the Mohammed Murad Abul Rahman bunch.

HUSTLER OF CULTURE
You can stand atop the mountain and scream your naked desires to the universe or shed that synapse epilepsy and hug the South Sound today with your fellow man:

MUSIC: On Wednesday, the Weekly Volcano’s Live Music and DJ Calendar tells Bobble Tiki that Planet Percussion, a world beat group, will play Sylvester Park in downtown Olympia. This makes Bobble Tiki wonder: When is there not a drum circle in Sylvester Park?

MORE MUSIC: What's on tonight.

THE ARTS: Bold pencil at Black Front Gallery.

THE DRINK: Tacoma Beer Society tomorrow.

BOBBLE TIKI'S THREATS AND PROMISES COLUMN
Good taste in general isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Bobble Tiki likes crappy wine â€" you know what that means? He doesn’t need to spend a hundred dollars a bottle to have a good time. Bobble Tiki likes crappy food â€" you know what that means?  He can find pleasure at El Gaucho or DQ. Bobble Tiki likes crappy television â€" you know what that means? He doesn’t have to pop for HBO.

Bobble Tiki’s life is all together happier because he has no taste. It’s a trade off he is happy to make.

The Swinos fall in here somewhere, Bobble Tiki swears. Check them Thursday at McCabe's.

As always, Bobble Tiki doesn't care what you do today because he doesn't even know you.  And unless you check out the Weekly Volcano's Web site, Bobble Tiki doesn't want to me you.  Besides, it's time to blow this joint because it's so obvious you are becoming further and further removed from all that is genuine and real and visceral and virtuous and Bobble Tiki doesn't play that with his morning bowl of Quisp.

OK, Bobble Tiki apologizes.  Please be his friend here.

Breakfast with Bobble Tiki runs Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.  Deal with it.

Bright Eyes plays Olympia Sept. 16

Brighteyes_2007 Omaha-based singer/songwriter Conor Oberst can be summed up in one hyphen: conflict-ridden. For some, he is and will no doubt remain untouchable â€" a lyrical genius a la Dylan. For others, Oberst’s work as Bright Eyes is nothing more than a companion piece to Chris Carrabba’s strained musings. Still others don’t understand why this indie rocker, who’s now known throughout the world, still hangs on to his hometown label turning up his nose to major labels’ promises.

I don’t know.  Don’t really care either.  I just want to soak it all in Sept. 16 when Bright Eyes plays the Capitol Theater in Olympia.

Tickets are $25 at TicketsWest. â€" Brad Allen

PETA loves the Tacoma Rainiers

For those who witnessed the Tacoma Rainiers kicking Sacramento’s ass today 11-4, did you chomp on some veggie burgers, baked potatoes or peanuts?  PETA knows you did as they have named Cheney Stadium the ninth vegetarian-friendly ballpark in the nation.

Safeco Field ranked third. â€" Brad Allen

Tacoma Election Day results

All those drinks plus a cab ride, Bobble Tiki had to go pretty badly. Bobble Tiki barely remembers hearing the words "sir, the bathroom is just outside the gymnasium, you're in the voting booth!"

Here's the beauty. Bobble Tiki doesn't remember who he voted for, or even if he voted at all. There's nothing to repress, just pure black-out hotness. So much mystery buzz.

Say what you will about Bobble Tiki. But don't ever speak ill of his election day program. The program is good, the program is solid.

Here are the unofficial results of yesterday's Pierce County elections. â€" Bobble Tiki

Phil Donahue and Eddie Vedder

Phil Donahue and Eddie Vedder â€" a winning team.

Who knew?

I certainly didn’t, and was prepared to unleash my arsenal of Donahue jokes when asked to pen a few words on the tandem â€" that is until I actually read the press release for “Body of War” which came streaming into Volcano World Headquarters today.

“Body of War” is a documentary directed by Donahue and Ellen Spiro, which focuses on the story of Tomas Young â€" a 25-year-old serviceman who enlisted days after the 9/11 attacks (presuming he’d be fighting Al Qaeda in Afghanistan), only to find himself in an unarmed car in Sadr City, Iraq. After serving for less than a week, Young was struck by a single bullet and paralyzed from the chest down. The documentary looks at a number of issues, including the congressional debate that sent U.S. troops into Iraq and the lack of adequate health care for veterans.

Vedder provided two new songs for the documentary after meeting with Young. According to the press release, Vedder’s songs “soar with the courageous veteran’s soul and spirit.”

“Body of War” will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 9/11/2007.

Check out its Web site for more information. â€" Matt Driscoll

The Pitch Pipe Infoshop

Nakedcityarticlemain82 About two years ago a group of friends were talking about some ideas they’d all been incubating for a number of years. These ideas for Mark, Jennifer, Pamela, and Paul, and two others who weren’t present as we met eventually coalesced into the form of anarchism.

The like-thinking group of people talked about the idea of opening the Pitch Pipe Infoshop, but the idea didn’t quite materialize during that first wave of discussions.

Then, as they revived the conversations, held meetings and discussed philosophies, “it happened immediately,” with its grand opening held on July 31.

The four speak through agreement; as anarchists they work and communicate collectively. The term “collective” is used a lot; there’s the collective of housemates who live in the home, which has some crossover to the Infoshop collective. “Not all are in both.”

I pose a general anarchy question from the standpoint of ignorance: my first and main experience with anarchy, maybe 25 years ago, was hearing on the news about the angry, violent punk anarchist mobs rebelling in England.

But the four before me are peace-loving, with some of them being involved in the Tacoma organization Food not Bombs. They commute by bikes and organize the fourth-Friday Critical Mass bike ride. The four in front of me are Tacoma anarchists, hoping to disseminate information that illuminates the ideas behind anarchism.

Pamela explains the concept by breaking down the word to its Greek roots, “An archy, not hierarchical. We don’t use authoritrianism.”

She adds, “We don’t have a president at Infoshop. We do have rules, but everyone decides on them.”

In terms of living daily as anarchists, the concept of “living within certain constraints” is repeated often. They obey laws, particularly those that involve common sense. Most have jobs. Paul explains, “One of the big challenges is trying to live differently; it seems like a lot of anarchists aren’t living differently. We’re paying rent, buying food. It’s difficult not to.”

What they try to do differently is live critically, asking questions like, “What is this rule? Who is benefiting from it? What are the options?”

Paul adds, “It’s not enough to live independent of the system, but to change the system.”

The Infoshop will try to do just that at their space on 617 S. 17th St., free for the public use during regular hours Friday noon to 4 p.m. and Saturdays 4-7 p.m., as well as during special events like workshops, skill-building sessions, movie nights and more.

“We could potentially serve as a meeting space; we’re pretty much open to anything that serves the community,” says Mark.

Contact them by e-mail, or go to the Pitchpipe Infoshop MySpace page for more information. â€" Jessica Corey-Butler

Johnny Rockets blasts off in Olympia

While most of us relegated our ballistic experiments to childhood â€" leaving those wimpy baking-soda projectiles and more beefy hairspray potato cannons as distant memories â€" some people continued their interest in rockets through adulthood.

Ready for a stretch?

All-American diner Johnny Rockets opened today at the Capital Mall in Olympia.

Natch!

Now Evergreen State College students can fulfill their munchies with burgers and shakes.

Veteran Johnny Rockets franchisee Robert Azinian of Cristcat Corporation will operate the new restaurant.  He currently operates 18 additional Johnny Rockets restaurants throughout Washington, Southern California and Connecticut.

Azinian hasn’t returned on phone call regarding our hunch on his amateur rocket science hobby. â€" Suzy Stump

Breakfast With Bobble Tiki

THE DAILY WORD
Learn it, use it, spell it

Heterodox \HET-uh-ruh-doks\, adjective:

1. Contrary to or differing from some acknowledged standard, especially in church doctrine or dogma; unorthodox.
2. Holding unorthodox opinions or doctrines.

USAGE EXAMPLE: Bobble Tiki’s religious views are often considered heterodox â€" especially considering he believes Jessica Simpson is his lord and savior.

Breakfastatbobbletikis THE MORNING NEWS

SCIENTISTS: Just a teaspoon of wastewater helps the drug test go down.

KATRINA: Billions still missing.

MURRAY: Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-galunga.

GENEVA: European “Cannonball Run.”

HUSTLER OF CULTURE
You can stand atop the mountain and scream your naked desires to the universe or shed that synapse epilepsy and hug the South Sound today with your fellow man:

MUSIC: Today is Thursday, meaning the real, live, paper and ink version of the Weekly Volcano hits the streets today. Bobble Tiki recommends picking up a copy and getting your music advice for today from someone who’s not a Hawaiian novelty doll. Besides, Bobble Tiki will be at the Gay Beast show tonight at the Manium in Olympia. You think he can recommend that with a straight face?

MORE MUSIC: What's on tonight.

THE EVENT: Twinkle! Pop-Crush-Fizz.

THE DRINK: Salty’s at Redondo Beach.

BOBBLE TIKI'S THREATS AND PROMISES COLUMN
Duke Robillard is a guitarist â€" in the truest sense. Over the course of a career that has spanned four decades, and probably twice as many styles, Robillard has again and again proven he’s one of the best pure guitarists to ever step on stage or set foot in the studio. His career began in 1967 when he co-founded the jump blues band Roomful of Blues with pianist Al Copley, and he’s still touring and teaching guitar to this day (obviously, since he’ll be at the Capitol Theater Aug. 29.)
