“Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt” opening Sept. 22 at Tacoma Art Museum may prove to be the most exciting show this museum has ever had. The show features 51 quilts from the famous Gee’s Bend quilters â€" all women, all descended from a single slave, and all residents of Gee’s Bend, Ala.,  a tiny town almost completely isolated from the rest of the state by its location in the bend of the Alabama River.

Special events in connection with “Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt”:

“If These Quilts Could Talk: A Community Conversation” â€" Visitors are invited to bring in their heirloom quilts and share their stories, Sept. 23, 2 p.m.

Members’ Opening Celebration â€" Four of the Gee’s Bend quilters will be special guests in the galleries. Two quilters will be available to sign exhibition catalogues exclusively for members, Sept. 29, 6 p.m., free for members and $10 for non-members.

Panel discussion with four of the quilters from Gee’s Bend: Mary Lee Bendolph, Louisiana Bendolph, Loretta Bennett, and Nettie Young, Sept. 30, 2 p.m., $5 for members and $15 for non-members.

Most restaurateurs buy their way into somebody else’s concept after deciding they don’t want to be executives any more. Charlie McManus worked his way up from washing dishes to become one of Tacoma’s premier restaurateurs, earning praise far and wide from food critics and patrons for menus created at the now legendary Primo Grill.

His next project â€" the Crown Bar scheduled to open in early October â€" will tap into a tradition that began in 1875 when his grandfather purchased a bar in Toome Bridge, Ireland.

“Hospitality is in my blood,” says McManus, who immigrated to the United States from Ireland in 1979.

The Crown Bar â€" occupying the site formerly run as Gary’s Steakout on Sixth Avenue â€" takes its name from an establishment in Belfast that claims to be the most beautiful bar in the world. The Tacoma version won’t boast intricate Italian glass and woodwork, but it does have a painting of Steve McQueen hanging over a silver-painted rock fireplace.

MUSIC: While the remaining members of Led Zeppelin recently announced plans to reunite for a night in memory of Ahmet Ertegun, a co-founder of Atlantic Records, most of you won’t get a chance to see it live. It’s in London, for one. And secondly, tickets for such a monumental occasion will surely cost an arm and two or three legs.

A show you can see, tonight at Hell’s Kitchen, features the Mosquito Neckties â€" a garage rock band from Seattle celebrating the release of their latest CD. Unlike Zeppelin, there’s nothing overly magical about what the Neckties do. It’s just dirty rock and roll.

Dirty rock and roll, however, goes a long way in my book.

BOBBLE TIKI'S THREATS AND PROMISES COLUMN
Unfortunately, Bobble Tiki isn’t currently hiding from the world or full of hate and spite. If he was, this weekend at Jazzbones would almost certainly be enough to lift him out of it. Thursday, Sept. 13, Junkyard Jane will get all their original members together for a reunion show. Friday Bump Kitchen will drop the R&B and funk. On Saturday reggae semi-legend Winston Jarrett will turn Sixth Avenue into Trenchtown. And Sunday, Sept. 16 Lydia Pense and Cold Blood will give Bobble Tiki vague, hazy flashbacks of the ’70s and the smell of skunks in his dad’s record den.

Linda Danforth seeks arts enthusiasts to join her on her quest to build the Tacoma Art Place, or TAP, an organization to provide space and access to equipment and training that will allow more people to affordably explore their creativity and artistic ability.

TAP is about to sign a lease for space, and the concept is that people would buy an annual membership or buy a day pass to visit the space and use the equipment or take classes and attend special events.

The next meeting is Sept. 25, 7 p.m., at the Tall Ships Tacoma office at 535 Dock St., Suite 211.

Glow sticks?  There will be an attempt to set the Guinness Book of World Records for most people playing with glow sticks Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Puyallup Fairgrounds Showplex.

Bobble Tiki will participate because he loves glow sticks. So helpful to find friends at night. Locate his bike. Look glowy and cute. They seem trite and childish but actually turn out to be mandatory and helpful and ethereal. What's not to like?

Woodstick. 

Woodstick 2007 hopes to attract 1,000 drummers this year to play the same music at the same time for six minutes and thus set a new Guinness World Record of more than 533 drummers.  It will take place at the same drum time and same drum location as mentioned above. Drummers confirmed to play include Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge, Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, and Pink Floyd), Alan White (YES, John Lennon) and death metal drummer Derek Roddy (Hate Eternal).

Anticipation is an amazing thing. It can make one fixate on things with almost intolerable clutches. Tacoma is now released from said clutches. Bombay Bistro really truly opened yesterday. Let the gluttony begin.

Like locust descending on a field of sweet corn, Tacomans from far and wide poured into Bombay Bistro at lunchtime for a long awaited taste of the East. Employee Carrie greeted us at the door and gave a nice surprise with, ââ?¬Å?Welcome to Bombay Bistro. Our buffet today is complimentary. Please have a seat where ever youââ?¬â?¢d likeââ?¬Â?. What? The food is, like, free? I felt like Elaine from Seinfeld trying to stifle a huge disbelieving ââ?¬Å?Get Out!ââ?¬Â? Grinning ear-to-ear and giggling like idiots, we staked out two tables for our comrades whoââ?¬â?¢d be joining us soon and zipped over to get in the buffet line. I kept breathing through my mouth and nose at once to take in all the heady aromas; ginger, cardamom, fragrant basmati rice, garlic.

A new fitness craze has hit the Tacoma area YMCA’s. It’s called Zumba and it’ll be sure to get you moving and grooving.

The Tacoma YMCA is offering Zumba classes to members of all fitness levels. It combines Latin based music (like salsa and meringue) and international music and provides a way for the participants to have fun and get a great cardio workout.

"It’s a pretty popular class within our branch," says YMCA executive director Chris Spivey.

Denise Hood, a Zumba instructor, agrees. "It’s a blast. It’s really fun and our members are crazy for it."

Zumba, a Latin and international based fitness dance, was created in the mid-1990s by celebrity fitness trainer Beto Perez. Following much success in his native Columbia, he brought the new fitness class to the United States in 2002. Zumba’s popularity rose through the roof producing more than 2,000 Zumba instructors worldwide.

Because Zumba is for all fitness levels, Hood notes that it’s easy to pick up.

"Whether you’ve had any dance background or not, it’s a free style thing, so it’s open to interpretation," she says. "That’s the beauty of it. That’s why it’s been so well received."

Zumba minimizes the stress on the joints and muscles, but at the same time it’s high in energy and endurance, the YMCA’s Web site stated. Zumba routines feature aerobic training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body.
