Battle of the Air Bands tip

Jonauer_2 As a public service to those bands participating in Battle of the Air Bands competition Saturday at Cans the Weekly Volcano contacted Tacoma native and Posies guitarist Jon Auer for his opinion on a winning air guitar move.

“I don’t think it’s guitar moves themselves that actually convince people you are a champion air guitarist," explains Auer. "More important are the ‘guitar faces’ you make and how much you move around. If you want tailor-made examples of good guitar face, I would suggest smelling some moldy Bleu cheese in front of a mirror and taking notes on your expression. Then try dropping a small television on one of your feet and see what your face decides to do next. A hundred to one, you will end up looking like you’re playing the solo from ‘Rock You Like a Hurricane’ by the Scorpions. It’s a winner every time.”

Good luck to all the participating bands.  It be a fun night. â€" Suzy Stump

Soldier thanks El Gaucho

Raymond Lee James, GDLS, Forward Repair Activity, dined at El Gaucho in downtown Tacoma the last day before departing for Iraq.  The restaurant awarded the Fort Lewis soldier with a plaque thanking him for his service to the country.

He's back!

He ventured back into El Gaucho with a U.S. flag that had been hanging in his base camp, as well as a certificate thanking El Gaucho for their support.

Hoo-ah! â€" Michael Swan

They were Devo

Devoone It was a Devo fan’s dream. The Akron, Ohio, quintet entertained a Puyallup Fair crowd last night showing a few old robotic moves, a fantastic light show and sounding like they haven’t skipped a beat.

“They still rock pretty damn good for some gray haired geezers," says Gregory Halstead, a huge Devo fan from Puyallup who possess several Devo import albums from Korean. "It was a great concert.”

DevomarknohatDevohat Although sporting a few extra pounds since their formation in 1972, the songs were played virtually note for note as the studio releases.

They hit the stage in their yellow radioactive suits from the Duty Now for the Future album with the red flower pot hats from Freedom of Choice album. Singer Mark Motherbaugh later ripped the suits off his fellow bandmates during “Uncontrollable Urge” to reveal black T-shirts, black shorts and white knee pads underneath.

Devobooji Booji Boy (Motherbaugh in an appropriately fatter latex face than the original) appeared for the concert finale, “Beautiful World.”

The song line last night:
Good Thing
Going Under
Peek a Boo
Girl U Want
Whip It
Secret Agent Man
Satisfaction
Uncontrollable Urge
Mongoloid
Blockhead
Jocko Homo (Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo)
Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA
Gates of Steel
(Short intermission) Devo Corporate Anthem
Freedom of Choice
Gut Feeling/Slap Your Mammy
Beautiful World (featuring Booji Boy)

Appropriately I ended the night watching another band in costume. Splendid Vengeance took the Hell's Kitchen stage in full "Spinal Tap"-like garb with special guest The Wizard (Ryan Loiselle) on Theremin.  Magical.

Ryanthewiz Splendid2 Splendid_2 Mos Generator warmed the Kitchen crowd like it was 1972.  These guys freaking rock. â€" Brad Allen

Brunch with Bobble Tiki

THE DAILY WORD
Learn it, use it, spell it

Egress \EE-gress\, noun:

1. The act of going out or leaving, or the right or freedom to leave; departure.
2. A means of going out or leaving; an exit; an outlet.

USAGE EXAMPLE: With the news that Barry Bonds is making his egress from the San Francisco Giants, who have decided not to resign or bring back the 43-year-old walking advertisement for human growth hormones and steroid creams, Bobble Tiki only has one thought.  Barry Bonds at DH for the Seattle Mariners.  Visualize it.

Breakfastatbobbletikis THE MORNING NEWS

IRAQ: Old Blackwater keeps on rollin’.

SONICS: Drive to the hole.

HONG KONG: He’s Batman!

TOGO: Ouch!

HUSTLER OF CULTURE
You can stand atop the mountain and scream your naked desires to the universe or shed that synapse epilepsy and hug the South Sound today with your fellow man:

MUSIC: Though Bobble Tiki likes the vibe at the Brotherhood Lounge, or even the The Clipper, better than he typically likes the vibe at McCoy's Tavern â€" two things are undeniable.  Number one: McCoy's equals inexpensive drinks.  Number two: the Swinos play with Jackmove at McCoy's tonight.  Who needs vibe when you've got cheap booze and a great band?  Not Bobble Tiki.

MORE MUSIC: What's on tonight.

THE ARTS: Catch a play tonight.

DISH: Where do you want to eat tonight?

FILM: “Eastern Promises” and “In The Valley of Elah” kick ass

BOBBLE TIKI'S THREATS AND PROMISES COLUMN
Bobble Tiki gets it. Bobble Tiki knows that making fun of old performers is funny. And Bobble Tiki knows that Leon Russell fits the bill.

But reducing Russell’s stop in Tacoma this week to merely an occasion for AARP cracks isn’t fair to anyone. It certainly doesn’t do justice to the career of such an accomplished American musician.

Please be Bobble Tiki’s friend here.

Breakfast with Bobble Tiki runs Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.  Deal with it.

Delicious fall day

Dukestunathing Let’s face it: On a fresh fall Sunday, when the sun finally pops out, the Seahawks are making a last ditch effort to beat Cincinnati, and sailboats drift by, a Duke’s tuna quesadilla hits the spot.

Five tasty triangle wedges loaded with huge chunks of yellow fin tuna, sweet cucumber Pica de Gallo, green onion, wasabi mayo dressing and Asiago cheese baked with very little juice drippings, yet moist.

Add a Blue Moon and a Seahawks victory, and it’s a very good day. â€" Suzy Stump

I Love Tacoma

I felt, last week, like Dorothy in reverse, coming back to a black and white Kansas after an amazing trip to Oz.  Maui was everything cliché about “tropical paradise” and after a week of that, to come home to grey skies and drizzle and a pesky post-flight malaise that seems to be a lingering low-grade viral headache funk, “home” seems anticlimactic.

I want to click my slippers and say, “there’s no place like Maui, there’s no place like Maui,” but it won’t do me any good; the wee one’s got school, the man has business trips, and I have a life to return to.

So it was with my state of mind last week; I was grouchy, grumpy, tired, and a whole lot of no fun to be around.

I forced myself out and about, though, and found some “only in T-Town” delights that helped bolster my mood:

Third Thursday Art Walk was fun.  I loved the energy and hyped vibe surrounding the very cool Helm Gallery, and I loved the family spirit that was Sanford and Son. James Hume’s pop-o-rama slices of Tacoma met up with five new works by Jeff Olson, just back from a summer of nature-lovin’ in Oregon.

Public parks rock.  On a bike ride through Point Defiance Park, I noted the “Ride for US” event, an eagle scout project, a Sierra Club trail works project, and three weddings.  Later in the day, as we went to the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, I noted two more weddings and two octopi, the highlight of the wee one’s trip.

While construction underway for a new and improved, expanded Kid Zone made for an obstructed park, I really liked the improvements made to the aquarium recently, as well as the goat grooming in the Kid Zone.

We also had fun at the new and improved Puget Park in Tacoma’s Proctor Business District, after which a painting play-date at Art and Soul warmed us up.

Wieners rule.  The significant one and I finally stopped by The Red Hot, on a date night out with two friends.  The names and descriptions of the dogs made me laugh, the Frito pie made me drool, the Roger’s pilsner made me happy, and the whole experience â€" the ambiance, the people, the music, the conversation â€"made me realize:  I love Tacoma. â€" Jessica Corey-Butler

Beerific

Where there’s beer, there’s burping, and where there’s beer-burping, there’s smiling. Beer aficionados from near and far are group hugging at Oktoberfest celebrations throughout the South Sound.

Steve Dunkelberger wrote about said celebrations in his Beervana column in this week’s Weekly Volcano.

Here are a couple more beer centric celebrations:

The Parkway Tavern presents its Miller Hi-Life Kegerator Night Wednesday, Sept. 26, 6-9 p.m.  Drop by the Stadium District hang out before Wednesday’s party and sign up to win a kegerator.

Doyle’s Public House will pitch an Oktoberfest tent in its parking lot Friday night for live music, beer, food and shot specials.  Friday night The F***ing Eagles will rock the parking lot.  Saturday, it’s Celtic and alt country tunes by Stout Pounders, Westerly and Ockham’s Razor.  Both shows start at 9 p.m. and don’t carry a cover charge. â€" Brad Allen

Crown Bar opens Saturday

Dining on fig pizza Friday night at Primo Grill I overheard owner/chef Charlie McManus tell a table that his new Crown Bar on Sixth Avenue would soft open this Wednesday.

A press release from Clover Park Technical College confirms the soft opening, which is actually three invitation only evening fund raisers, Wednesday, Sept. 26 through Friday, Sept. 28, benefiting CPTC’s Culinary Arts program.

In the statement CPTC president John Walstrum states, "The generosity of Charlie McManus, Jacqueline Plattner (Primo Grill, Crown Bar owners) and Phyllis McGavick Broich (McGavick Wines) is just phenomenal.  Our culinary students are very fortunate to have such incredible benefactors creating opportunities for our students to be successful."

The Crown Bar will officially open Saturday, Sept. 29.

Breakfast with Bobble Tiki

THE DAILY WORD
Learn it, use it, spell it

Anodyne \AN-uh-dyn\, adjective:
1. Serving to relieve pain; soothing.
2. Not likely to offend; bland; innocuous.

noun:
1. A medicine that relieves pain.
2. Anything that calms, comforts, or soothes disturbed feelings.

USAGE EXAMPLE: During the Seahawks last minute victory over the weekend, Bobble Tiki received picture messages from his buddy at the game â€" a supervisor at a local landscaping outfit. The pictures showed Bobble Tiki’s buddy, shirt off, blitzed on at least 30-plus dollars of Qwest Field beer. Unfortunately, Bobble Tiki did not receive a picture message when his buddy vomited on the train ride back home. Bobble Tiki only wonders what Monday was like in the work truck for his buddy, and if there was an anodyne for his pounding headache and Hawk burned man chest.

VOTE: Is the system fair?

SPACE: Buganauts kill.

NEW YORK: Almost popped during the question.

HOTEL: Our pet ducks’ heads keep popping off!

HUSTLER OF CULTURE
You can stand atop the mountain and scream your naked desires to the universe or shed that synapse epilepsy and hug the South Sound today with your fellow man:

MUSIC: Bobble Tiki’s not in the military. To be honest with you, there’s no way he could cut it. The whole country is better off with Bobble Tiki as a civilian. However, if Bobble Tiki was in the armed forces, he knows for damn sure he’d make his way to Maggie O’Toole’s in Lakewood every Tuesday to watch three local bands “rock his face off,” and enjoy half off his entire military tab. When you start talking half off tabs, you start talking Bobble Tiki’s language.

MORE MUSIC: What's on tonight.

DISH: Where do you want to eat tonight?

FILM: “Eastern Promises” and “In The Valley of Elah” kick ass.
