The River and Sound Review
Jay Bates is noted creator, director, and producer of A River and Sound Review, a non-profit, live literary arts, music, and poetry show that he independently produces for radio in Pierce County. The next live production of River and Sound Review will be held tonight at 7 p.m. in the Puyallup Public Library. There, Pennsylvania poet, Philip Terman, will be welcomed as he reads from his new book, Rabbis of the Air. Terman will be joined by fiction writer, Elea Carey, and musical guest, Patrick Bradshaw. I had been to O’Malley’s Irish Pub a few times in my old Femme Fianna Dockyard Derby Dames days. It was always late at night, dark, crowded, and reeked of beer and sweat. I loved it. The best throw downs, punk bands and bartenders have graced O’Malley’s soil during the after dinner hours â€" so it was up to us to see what we could learn from a little dive bar visit during the daytime. That is, after all, one of the true dive bar tests.

Shining City
See it now or regret your oversight. Harlequin Production is set to end its run of Shining City, a play that involves a former priest  (played by Vincent Brady) who becomes a counselor. His patient John (Anders Bolang) is haunted by the recent death of his wife. The show involves tight language and long monologues as it swings through the emotional roller coaster of life.

Yesterday while I was loitering around my usual hangout, Tuell - McKee Funeral Home on Sixth Avenue, I was alerted to some broken news â€" literally.

With a flagrant disrespect for a white funeral vans, someone broke a van window in the parking lot of Tuell - Mckee late Tuesday night.  Here you see Jeff, one of the funeral directors, hard at work sweeping out the crushed glass from the front seat of the van.  He informed me that nothing was taken from the vehicle, and that the only thing of value (jumper cables) was left unharmed.

In other news, I noticed a striking similarity between two other vehicles in the funeral home parking lot.

After weeks (if not months) of hype and excitement, today the 2008 Broadway Tacoma Farmers Market is finally a reality. The festivities started at 9 a.m. sharp, and the fresh produce and artsy craftsy extravaganza will run until 2 p.m.

The event is sure to draw a who’s who in Tacoma â€" with every local living, eco-friendly personality in the City of Destiny sure to show up and be seen.

And, of course, the Weekly Volcano is there, too â€" documenting the action and looking for free samples.  Steph DeRosa and I have drawn to tough assignment of covering the fracas, and shortly we’ll be reporting live from the action.

1:29 p.m. STEPH: In the next week we should be seeing salads in a bread cone from Gayl and Bianca at the Swiss Pub. This is of course after I have an angioplasty from the Market's tamale stand.

MATT DRISCOLL: BOB’S JAVA JIVE KEEPS THE DRIVE ALIVE >>>

There are a few bands in this town that I always keep my eye on. Whenever I see their name, I know the show’s worth paying attention to.

The Fucking Eagles are one of those bands.

Face it. The Fucking Eagles rule. Not only do they have “fuckng” right in their band name (which just screams dangerous, doesn’t it?), but their grimy garage rock meets maximum R&B could be the soundtrack to our city. The Fucking Eagles always put together killer lineups, too. When you see the band scheduled to rock, you know the whole night will be good.

So, when I saw the Fucking Eagles scheduled for a gig at Bob’s Java Jive this Saturday, May 17, I knew it would be a show worth getting the scoop on. Roy Loney of Flamin’ Groovies fame and Tripwire from Seattle are also on the bill, which left me with some research to do. Here’s the deal:

Tripwires is solid. Made up of drummer Mark Pickerel, brothers Jim and Johnny Sangster and vocalist John Ramberg â€" these guys have played in so many notable Northwest bands it’s almost silly. Together Tripwires lays down ear friendly, Cheap Trick-esque rock that’s exactly what it should be â€" both fresh and familiar.

As for Loney and the Longshots, what you need to know is Loney was a main cog in ’60s and ’70s era San Francisco rockers The Flamin’ Groovies â€" a band that had the misfortune of being at the wrong place in the wrong time (San Francisco during the late ’60s hippie explosion) but wielded powerful two-pronged blues rock that has given them a cult following to this day. Loney remains a revered man, and there are probably plenty of rockers in Tacoma looking forward to his stop at the Jive.

The Fucking Eagles, Roy Loney and the Longshots, and The Tripwires will play Bob’s Java Jive this Saturday. It’ll be one of the best shows this week. Hands down.

ROXANNE MURPHY: MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZA SUNDAY >>>

One of the things I always tell people about Tacoma is that if you really want something positive to happen here, and if your idea is good enough, this entire city will come out in force to support it.

This theory has been proven yet again through the unique individuals and organizations that have come together to create Rock the Cause, taking place this Sunday, May 18 from 2 to 9 p.m. at Jazzbones.

I'm one of the leaders of Love Tacoma, and I hoped to create an event that showcased different kinds of local Tacoma bands that deserved additional exposure.

Love Tacoma also wanted to forge a partnership with Project:U, an incredible group that attracts 20-and 30-somethings through cool events and volunteer activities that are philanthropic fund-raisers for the United Way of Pierce County.

But I went into this idea initially with hesitation. I'm a master event planner, but I've yet to organize any kind of music festival. Among so many details, I wondered how we would pay for the bands and for the venue to host them since Love Tacoma functions on zero funding, solely on donations.

Fortunately, I reached out to Jennifer Johnson from Jazzbones, and she set all of my concerns at ease.

Jazzbones had been wanting to host a Love Tacoma event (yea!), and even better, Jennifer was willing to coordinate the band lineup and logistics. What I really can't believe is that all of the bands agreed to play for free since the proceeds from this event are going to a good cause, the United Way's Community Solutions Fund.

Love Tacoma is now eternally indebted to Evan Purcell, Fear Train Caravan, Matt Coughlin, Nasty Left, Paris Spleen, The Vamanos and Trip the Light Fantastic.

When I met with the Project:U crew, they were so amped about Rock the Cause and ready to support it, but they had one additional request: Could we ask people to bring their old cell phones so they could be reused through yet another good cause: The Crystal Judson Family Justice Center. OF COURSE!!!

As an additional partnership, The Weekly Volcano has been so kind in donating ad space and throwing words our way in today's edition.

Now, the rest of the support for Rock the Cause will come from you, Tacoma. Please plan on attending this unique event to show your love for local music, a small business and the community at large for just $8 from 2 to 9 p.m. this Sunday, May 18, at Jazzbones.
