It's on today

Volcanoblastart STAGE
Reviving Ophelia
Olympia Family Theater is staging Reviving Ophelia, a play based on the best-selling adolescent psychology book by Dr. Mary Pipher that dives into deals with the  “look-obsessed, media-saturated, girl-poisoning culture” we find ourselves living in these days. The stage adaptation is designed to showcase several episodes of adolescent development in younger girls that lead to self-esteem issues and self-defeating actions, and ultimately leave the audience questioning the role of society in raising teenage girls. â€" Steve Dunkelberger
[The Midnight Sun Performance Space, 1 p.m. Sunday, $8-$15, 113 Columbia St., downtown Olympia, oly.org]

LITERATURE
The Zine Gathering
Pronounced zeens, from the word magazines, these handmade, self-published creations often incorporate illustration, photography, and text â€" all in a cut-and-paste format, commonly photo-copied, with hand stapling or twine binding the booklets together. Many readers are delighted to find the subject matter just as raw.

For those interested in connecting with other zinesters in the South Sound, Nicki Saluba is hosting The Zine Gathering today. The event is free and open to anyone with an interest in zines. You don’t have to have made one to come. During the gathering, there will be a potluck dinner, zine readings by authors, and zine trading. â€" Tammy Robacker
[Olympia Free School, 4-6:30 p.m., free, 610 Columbia St., Olympia, olympiazines@gmail.com]

BIG BAND
Rich Wetzel’s Groovin’ Higher Jazz Orchestra
I’ll attempt to avoid any complaints from musical genre police by placing six tags on Rich Wetzel’s Groovin’ Higher Jazz Orchestra from the get-go: Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson, Count Basie and Maynard Ferguson.  They are a high-energy big band with their sights on jazz from the ’50s to the present. â€" Ron Swarner
[Jazzbones, Sunday, June 1, 6 p.m., $7, all ages, 2803 Sixth Ave., Tacoma, 253.396.9169]

Natasha does Darfur benefit

NATASHA GORBACHEV: I SO SAVED DARFUR >>>

Darfurdarfurdude It's no secret at all that I'm such a fan of Emily Adler, Jessica Gavre, Aurora Jewell, and Kendra Varadi.

They're the spirited bunch that pulled together the Stand Up For Darfur fundraiser as mere volunteers, heads filled with intellect and hearts on their sleeves that were overflowing with passion.

Darfurgirls Their event yesterday at Doyle's Pubic House was successful in so many ways.

It brought incredible awareness to the minds of the masses on the atrocious genocide occurring in Darfur, Sudan.

A sweet lineup of bands and exposure for each of them commenced: Sea Navy, Kate Tucker and the Sons of Sweden, Stephanie Johnson, Blanco Bronco, Heidi Vladyka, Matt Coughlin, The Joshua Cain Band, Negative 7 and John Walker at the Hitchhikers.

DarfurjohnwalkerDarfurhitchhikers Darfurguitar_2 Darfurruss_2 Darfurstephaniejohnson_2 Darfurblanco Darfurnegative7_2 People donated to the cause through swag sales (I LOVE my new hoodie), a silent auction and cool raffle items (I even scored a Save Darfur T-shirt!).

This event also packed out Doyle's Public House during hours that might not have such high volumes.

Darfurlotsofpeople It included all kinds of T-Town celebrities, including Pretty-Face Patrick who was supporting the event in a cast due to a soccer injury. He claims his cast glows in the dark (I would've tried to request camouflage myself), and I'm wondering if that's just a ploy to get girls in his bedroom. But what I'm really trying to say is that several stories were told and so much fun was had that made giving all of money to this worthy cause all the better.

Darfurbrotherfriend Darfurglowinthedarkcas Best of all, by the time I took off (they still had three more bands to go), these four female volunteers, their powerful community partners, and the friends and family who supported them had raised $6,100 for the cause.

Darfurcolin If you ask me, that's grassroots support and love at its best.

Congratulations to these girls and to all who supported and worked to save Darfur.

I'll be contacting my legislators this week.

Dollface called me vanilla

STEPH DEROSA: DINNER WITH DEROSA >>>

Dinner61olyfarmersmark Since I gave the Olympia Farmers Market a big holla! in last week’s printed Weekly Volcano, I figured I needed to back it up with a little exploration.  It doesn’t matter what the weather is like in Olympia that Farmer’s Market is always rockin’ with plenty of area under cover.  And I don’t mean undercover in a Huggy Bear kid of way; I mean they have that place under a wooden roof.

My meal for this week’s dinner will be made from the fresh local ingredients found at the Olympia Farmer’s Market.

Dinner61gaelica Let’s stop pretending you don’t like Celtic music.  The band playing for our dinner is the righteous Gaelica band. We had a blast moving our bodies to the sound and my 5 year old twirled like you’ve never seen her twirl before.  I’d like to clarify that if you do in fact click on the band’s name link above, I am not the person who posted that video.  I’d love to take credit for the clever screen name “theunabonger,” but unfortunately it is not I.

Dinner61heidi A super friendly and ridiculously cool person I met that day was Heidi from Fossilwear. Fossilwear is hippie wear at its finest.  Hand-dyed hemp clothing will never die.  NEVER!

Dinner61janefrueh It’s fun to ask bartender Brian at Doyle’s Public House for his hot nuts.  Trust me, as old as it may get for Brian to hear it, it never gets old to my friend Gayle Selden when she asks him. Unfortunately, it’s not as fun to ask the lovely Jane Frueh for her hot nuts.  Nope, not as fun.  She’s amazingly nice and has a great smile, but she’s no Brian.  Her hot nuts, on the other hand, are to die for. I have never tasted a heaping helping of heavenly hot nuts like these.

Dinner61dollfaceandlong Dollface and Long Haired David are my next two guests.  I was intrigued when I met them, and they were high when they met me.  Or something.

When I asked Dollface the background of his clothing he answered me with this:
“You vanilla people have Halloween, us other people get to have the rest of the year.”  Wait, what?  Did he just call me “vanilla”?  Oh no he di-in’t!  That motherfucker.  Hey, dude, I would never judge you or anyone else based on how they dressed, so how dare you try and pass the “vanilla” judgment on me?  He obviously has no idea who he’s talking to. Call me vanilla, I’ll show him a flavor he can’t refuse.  Besides, I think I’m more of a rocky road / banana split kinda gal anyway.

Dinner61candisandkatie In order to burn off all this anger I was going to need some meditation.  I needed some sweaty hot yoga.  While I was at Bikram Yoga Center in Tacoma I ran into Candis Kanabel and Katie Hadley.  I run into Candis everywhere, almost on a weekly basis.  We met at a Babblin’ Babs Bistro dinner in April, and now we seem to bump into each other all around town.  The three of us just finished up an excruciating but very cleansing 90 minute Bikram Yoga session.  They kicked us out because we were sweating on the furniture as we chatted after class, so we had to take the fun outside.  I can’t wait to catch up with them even more at dinner this week.

Mangiamo!

Anger tonight

Volcanoblastart MEETING
Community Based Services
The City of Tacoma will host a community information meeting about the expansion of the Community Based Services (CBS) program â€" which will officially start attempting to reduce crime, blight, and all sorts of other nasty stuff on the same day in the Lincoln, Lincoln South, Whitman and Dome Top neighborhoods. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the Lincoln High School Auditorium, and “light refreshments” will be served. Citizens will get a briefing about how the City of Tacoma will work with citizens from the aforementioned neighborhoods to make life better for all involved â€" both people affected by high rates of crime and ugliness in the area and the police and city employees who respond to the frequent calls for service from that neck of the woods. Education and community involvement will be stressed, as will the fact that the CBS program can’t work without concerned citizens taking charge. â€" John Herbert

ROCK
Mothers Anger
If you attend this show, bring your earplugs as Mothers Anger might cause hearing loss for a few days after their gig if you don’t. The Michael Davis (MC5 bass player) â€"endorsed Israel duo are pretty hardcore as they mix punk, garage and classic rock for a bombastic timbre that can only be described as shit kickin’ rock and roll. But don’t compare them to the White Stripes or you’re liable to get kicked in the gonads. Relying on volume, screaming guitars, crashing drums and vile vocals, Mothers Anger is not a polished band. Rather, they play loose and wild with a fury that harkens back to the Stooges in 1968. But they aren’t a band without an opinion or philosophy. That’s right, no songs about hot rods and getting laid.  â€" Tony Engelhart

BOBBLE TIKI: BREAKFAST WITH BOBBLE TIKI >>>

THE DAILY WORDBobblepaddycoynesbreakf

Countermand \KOWN-tuhr-mand; kown-tuhr-MAND\, transitive verb:
1. To revoke (a former command); to cancel or rescind by giving an order contrary to one previously given.
2. To recall or order back by a contrary order.
3. A contrary order.
4. Revocation of a former order or command.

USAGE EXAMPLE: After realizing his mistake Tom Arnold decide countermand his order. He’d go with the meatlovers pizza, not just pepperoni and extra cheese.

Hang Murray Morgan

BRAD ALLEN: MURRAY MORGAN BRIDGE ART SHOW >>>

I’m not the Weekly Volcano art critic. Not even close.  I do want to alert you fine Spew readers to BKB & Company’s upcoming Murray Morgan Bridge juried art show. The gallery has teamed up with The Art Stop and LeRoy Jewelers to “celebrate the historically and culturally significant landmark” states a press release. Drop by BKB at 1734 Pacific Ave. and check it out.

Bkbdeanwalch3dbridge Besides the righteous art and that a portion of the proceeds from the art sales will go to the Save The Bridge organization, I bring this show to your attention because Oregon photographer Dean Walch’s 3-D photo of the bridge freaks me out.  I saw this same image stumbling out of Cans the other day.
