Total trip

Volcanoblastart_2 SPORTS
Hilltop Challenge
After a decent amount of training and practice, not to mention plenty of Ben Gay, the Tacoma Police Department will face off against the Tacoma Fire Department in the 4th Annual Hilltop Challenge â€" a basketball game intended to raise money for Associated Ministries’ Hilltop Action Coalition and the very worthy work they do in this community. â€" Matt Driscoll
[University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse, 7 p.m., $7-$10, 1500 N. Warner, Tacoma]

BENEFIT
Pre-Funk Friday
To see reggae freaks Little Big Man and roots rockers the Joshua Cain Band scheduled to provide the “funk” for the “pre,” well Bobble Tiki figured things couldn’t get much better. But when he saw Bumma Stoge, One Way Trip, Ben and Ted Fuller of Fear Train Caravan and DJ Broam were also scheduled to perform, he had one thought, and one thought only.

Friday at Jazzbones may be the pre-funk to end all pre-funks. What better way to get the City of Destiny psyched for the June 29 Urban Art Festival than their pre-funk fundraiser of this proportion? â€" Bobble Tiki
[Jazzbones, Little Big Man, Joshua Cain Band, Bumma Stoge, One Way Trip, The Fighting Fullers, DJ Broam, Friday, June 7, 7 p.m., $8, 2803 Sixth Ave., Tacoma, 253.396.9169]

STAGE
The Rocky Horror Show
Talking about evil stuff, how about the creepy Dr. Frank N Furter and his sex-starved minions. These days, we can string our sexual deviances together into a pearl necklace, as it were, of letters (BD, DS, SM, PS, SBB, CD, TV, TS). Thirty years ago, some of this new vocabulary was given to us by that now-famous transsexual prophet from a distant world. And The Rocky Horror Picture Show still rouses people’s interest, thanks to Harlequin Productions. â€" Steve Dunkelberger
[State Theater, through July 22 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday, $12-$38, 202 Fourth Ave., Olympia, 360.786.0151]

1. The condition of being completely filled or supplied.
2. Excessive fullness, as from overeating.

USAGE EXAMPLE: After his third McDonald’s double cheeseburger, Bobble Tiki finally reached repletion. Shortly thereafter he reached sick to his stomach.

The Tacoma Files: Mike Ball

DANIEL BLUE: MEET MIKE BALL >>>

TacomafilesmikeballTacomafilesart_6 Mike Ball was born on Oct. 7 1983, in Los Angeles, Calif.  He moved to Washington at the ripe old age of 10. He called Gig Harbor home until he moved to downtown Tacoma four years ago.

I met Mike several years ago at The Grand Cinema, where he is usually checking up on longtime friends Sean Alexander and Peter Lynn (owners of the Helm Gallery).

Mike is a catch.  Cody Jones, rocker for the hottest band ever, The Elephants, claims Mike is the "most eligible bachelor in all of Tacoma."

How so?

As a hobby, Mike collects rare furniture off craigslist. I've seen his furniture. I tested it. I've sat on the most intelligently engineered chairs and couches - the kind you've seen in Italian films.

Mike is also a stand up guy - the sort of fellow you want on your team, the kind of friend that will tell you the awful truth, even if it hurts a little.

Currently he commands The Monsoon Room. The Hilltop Tacoma lounge has taken an interesting vibe since mike took some of the reigns from owner Laura Malone.  "He's Perfect," says Laura.

I intend to agree.

Fridays with Eric

MATT DRISCOLL: NO NOTES FROM THE TOP TODAY >>>

Citymanager_pic

As I said last week, nearly every Friday Tacoma City Manager Eric Anderson meets with local media types for what can be best described as a small press briefing. It takes place in a double digit floor of the municipal building, and usually includes John Larson from the Tacoma Weekly, Jason Hagey from the News Tribune and myself â€" along with Manager Eric and City of Tacoma Community Relations dreamboat Rob McNair-Huff.

The key word is “nearly,” it seems - as McNair-Huff just informed me that Mr. Anderson is out of the office this afternoon, and there will be no press briefing today.

It’s an unfortunate development, even if it means my Friday just got that much easier. Fridays with Eric is something I look forward to.

To help quench the Tacoma blogosphere’s thirst for inside info, I attempted to ask McNair-Huff what he had for lunch. A sandwich, perhaps? Maybe soup on a day like today?

The good news for Tacoma is it seems Rob has better things to do than answer questions about what he had for lunch. While disappointing on the gossip front, it’s probably a positive sign for Tacoma.

Anyway, I had a grilled cheese sandwich. It was awesome. What’s not awesome is there’ll be no Fridays with Eric post this afternoon. Assuming Mr. Anderson is back next week, so will this feature.

Tons to do today

Volcanoblastart DOGS
Strut Your Mutt
Broadway Center and The Humane Society of Tacoma and Pierce County will hold a fund-raiser this Saturday at the Rialto. It’s called Strut Your Mutt and will involve a Goofy Pet Tricks competition, Pet Boutique and Adopt a Pet Fair, followed by an evening Premier Pet Fashion Show. The competition is limited to dogs only, but you can bring your pet monkey, chinchilla, or emo little brother if you don’t have a dog. â€" John Herbert
[Rialto Theater, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., $10-$50, 310 S. Ninth St., Tacoma, 253.591.5894]

ART
2008 Neddy Award winners
The Neddies are here again. The Neddy Fellowships are among the most prestigious art awards in the state and are granted each year to two worthy Washington state artists in honor of longtime Seattle painter Robert “Ned” Behnke, who died in 1989. Every year for the past four years Tacoma Art Museum has shown works by the winners and nominees (this year two winners and eight nominees). Ostensibly the winners are among the very best artists in the state. I don’t always agree with the jurors’ choices. In fact, I don’t think I have ever agreed with the top choices. This year is an exception. I think Randy Hays, fellowship recipient in painting, and Akio Takamori, winner in ceramics, are both fully deserving of the awards. â€" Alec Clayton
[Tacoma Art Museum, through June 15, Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Third Thursdays 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday noon-5 p.m.  1701 Pacific Ave., Tacoma, 253.272.4258]

EVENT
Olympia Comics Festival
The Olympia Comics Festival does it right with panels, a cartoonist and small-press publishers-only expo with no dealer tables, and an entertaining two-hour stage show featuring short interviews, slide-shows, and skits. This is your only chance to pick up those back issues of Skull and The Slayer you’ve been looking for. And it’s also your only chance to meet some of the top talents in the comic industry, including Jeffrey Brown, Jim Woodring and Michel Gagne (Ratatouille). â€" Michael Swan
[The Vault, Saturday, June 7, noon to 5 p.m, 425 Franklin St.; Capital Theater, Saturday, June 7, 6 p.m., all ages, $1, 206 Fifth Ave. S.E., Olympia, 360.705.3050]

BOOK
Wanda Brunstetter
Bobble Tiki thinks he’s on the verge of becoming Amish. Or Shaker. Or Quaker. But how? Hmmm. Wanda Brunstetter, who grew up in Tacoma, writes about the Amish, as in the case with her latest book A Sister’s Hope, which brings resolution to the Hostettler family attacks. She’s well known in Amish circles. She’s in Tacoma Saturday. She’ll know. â€" Bobble Tiki
[Dightman’s Bible Book Center, 1-3 p.m., free, 2941 S. 38th St., Tacoma, 800.WITH.GOD]

CIGARS
La Gloria Cubana
La Gloria Cubana is going to be the cigar event of the year. Special guest Patrick DeWitt (no relation to Joyce DeWitt) will be there along with all kinds of food, drink and cigar specials for smokers to relish. The event is from 2-6 p.m., so try and forgo that afternoon nap and grab your zippo â€" it’s going to be a cigar lover’s blast. â€" Steph DeRosa
[Thunderbird Aficionado Cigar Lounge, 2-6 p.m., 7121 Waller Road E., Tacoma, 253.531.8814]

DANCE PUNK
Denelian
This constantly evolving ’80s synth happy punk band is doing a lot of things right. Their sound is contagious. Their just released Gossip With the Devil EP shows a promise few local bands can match. These kids know how to string a pop song together, and since their start in 2005 they’ve only been getting better at it. Denelian will play Bob’s Java Jive tonight. â€" Matt Driscoll
[Bob’s Java Jive, Denelian, New Faces, Chores, Darren Selector, Saturday, June 7, 8 p.m., $5, 2102 S. Tacoma Way, Tacoma]

Fat babies hang at Jazzbones

SUZY STUMP: NECESSARY CESAREAN >>>

Fatten_2 Ah, the fine art of criticism. The fine art of speaking authoritatively about the stuff that other people do. Hurrah!! You, too, can do this. Just use lots of words that are vague yet steeped in meaning. Words like “poignant,” “haunting,” “poetic.” You’ll be working in no time. Buuuttt we suppose you should have some sort of basic idea what these words mean. Just because. Therefore, before you are allowed to solicit any sort of position in your newfound profession, you must see the Necessary Cesarean fat baby exhibit hanging in Jazzbones’ second floor. Because Mary K. Johnson’s fat baby painting is really poignant, Dave Davison’s fat baby art piece really is haunting, and Linda Lapping’s fat baby really is poetic. So hah.

The Tacoma Files: Adam Hall

DANIEL BLUE: MEET ADAM HALL >>>

TacomafilesadamhallTacomafilesart_5 Adam Hall was born in 1978 in beautiful Santa Monica, Calif., where he lived until he was 3 until his parents relocated to Tacoma.

"I moved away when I was 14, and had to go to school in Puyallup, but I would always ride the bus back here because I couldn't make friends with those Puyallup kids," says Adam.

He's back in Tacoma, driving a cab and making music.

Adam is always good for a story - he bumps into a lot of interesting characters in his cab.  Once he told me about a robbery and guns and shots fired and hearts pounding and âÂ¦ you should just get it from the man himself.

I like Adam for his conversation style.   HeâÂÂs intelligent, witty, and almost every time I talk to him I come away with a smile on my face.  He seems to know most everyone I know and I often stumble on the most random conversations with him at the center.

Adam is the king of the good mood.  You can find him between calls drinking coffee and chatting it up with the local color.
