Term limits up for vote

MICHAEL SWAN: TERM LIMITS UP FOR VOTE >>>

While the Weekly Volcano World Headquarters is currently under siege by pirates, The New Takhoman reports via e-mail:

The Tacoma City Council voted tonight to give the voters of the City of Tacoma the go ahead to vote in the November 2008 election to modify the Tacoma City Charter to abolish the ten year mayoral and city council term limits.

After limited citizen and unlimited council input the council voted 5 to 4 to put the issue on the November ballot.

Shiver me timbers!

Who's who of local art

Volcanoblastart FILM
Mongol
A ferocious film, blood-soaked, pausing occasionally for passionate romance and more frequently for torture. As a visual spectacle, it is all but overwhelming, putting to shame some of the recent historical epics from Hollywood. If it has a flaw, and it does, it is expressed succinctly by the wife of its hero: "All Mongols do is kill and steal." At the end of two hours, its hero, not yet known as Genghis Khan, has two more movies to go. Awesome, if you go for nonstop carnage. Rated R. Three and a half stars. â€" Roger Ebert
[The Grand Cinema, 3:15, 6, and 8:40 p.m., $4.50-$8, 606 Fawcett Ave., Tacoma, 253.593.4474]

GAME
Knowledge Night
If somewhere in the deep, dark recesses of your noggin there lurks the knowledge that actor Abe Vigoda is six-foot-four and grew up on New York’s Lower East Side, then this listing is for you. Every Wednesday Doyle’s Public House in Tacoma hosts Knowledge Night where individuals or teams answer two pages of brain teasers, trivia and current events for shirts, tickets and gift certificates. It’s a challenging, fun night. â€" Brad Allen
[Doyle’s Public House, 7 p.m. every Wednesday, no cover, 208 St. Helens Ave., Tacoma, 253.272.7468]

Once laconic

BOBBLE TIKI: BREAKFAST WITH BOBBLE TIKI >>>

THE DAILY WORDBobbleatmarysburgerbis

Laconic \luh-KON-ik\, adjective:
Using or marked by the use of a minimum of words; brief and pithy; brusque.

USAGE EXAMPLE: Until Bobble Tiki discovered the magic of being paid by the word at his first newspaper job in the ‘70s, he was much more laconic. It’s funny how money can change a person.

The Tacoma Files: Kate Monthy

DANIEL BLUE: MEET KATE MONTHY >>>

Tacomafileskatemonthly Tacomafilesart Kate Monthy is a dancer. She looks like a dancer. She walks like a dancer. She speaks as if conversation were a carefully choreographed partnership in articulation.

"MLKBallet is an organization that produces and teaches dance," she says curtly, and then with a little bow of her head into a memorized eloquence, "a tuition free school for dance, offering affordable entertainment and exposing people to dance in Tacoma."

I cared little for dance before Kate conceived her way into giving back in the form of instructing young movement.

A product of Tacoma City Ballet, she has basically been training for this job since she was a very little girl.

"Dance is just MLKBallet's medium to bring kids and adults together to create and watch good art. I choose it because that's what I know how to teach and produce."

Kate's MOVE series is a way of showcasing the budding young talent while simultaneously inspiring and educating a growing audience with professional performances from the dance community.

"This is about new models," says Kate when I asked her about the goals the nonprofit ballet school, "new ways to run a dance school, run an organization, new ways to teach children, and new ways of creating an appetite and vocabulary for this kind of art."

Kate is beautiful.

The Wheelmobile is coming

MATT DRISCOLL: PAT SAJACK GROUPIE ALERT >>>

384308482_4cbb40a10c_o
Ever wanted to party with Pat Sajack? How about shoot the shit with Vanna White?

Well, it won’t exactly be your chance to do just that on Tuesday, July 15 â€" but it might be as close as you’ll ever get.  That’s because the Wheel of Fortune “Wheelmobile” will be making a stop at the Emerald Queen Casino to thank fans for their long term support of the popular game show, and more importantly, Wheel of Fortune head honchos will be looking for future contestants.

This could be your shot at Wheel of Fortune fame.

Wanna buy a vowel?

Here’s how it will work: Inside the Emerald Queen on the night of Tuesday, July 15, three simulated Wheel of Fortune shows will take place â€" at 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 8 p.m., respectively. An hour before each simulated show, those who’ve showed up will get a chance to fill out an application. Prior to the start of each simulated show, contestants will be drawn randomly. There’ll be no need to show up early, as everyone who makes it to the Emerald Queen Casino on time will have the chance to at least fill out an application. According to official Wheel of Fortune intelligence collected by the Weekly Volcano, Sajack and White prefer contestants who are “energetic, enthusiastic and fun.”

Figures. Pretty much rules me out. How about you?

Pirate takeover

MATT DRISCOLL: HELD HOSTAGE >>>

Pirate

Pssst. Hey you!

Help!

The Weekly Volcano’s World Headquarters has been taken over by pirates. As I type this, hiding in the fetal position underneath my desk clutching a life-sized cardboard cutout of John Elway I keep for inspiration, pirates of all blimey shapes and sizes are pillaging and plundering everything in sight. I haven’t seen Suzy Stump in an hour, and in all honesty I’m worried about her. (I hope she didn't get nabbed by the dude in that photo!)

The reason for the pirate invasion, of course, is Tall Muthafuckin’ Ships Tacoma 2008. The hobbling and eye patched swabs stormed into our offices sometime yesterday, and we’ve all been held captive since. From what I gather (and it’s tough to see what’s going on while tucked like a coward in the fetal position), these pirates have taken it upon themselves to write and produce our entire Tall Ships Tacoma ’08 issue, which hits streets tomorrow.

So, if you like pirates, tomorrow’s issue of the Weekly Volcano will be for you. It’s written by pirates, for those who like pirates.

But if you like anyone who works for the Weekly Volcano, please send help.

Cardboard Elway can only protect me for so long.

Need a LIFT?

MATT DRISCOLL: MONEY AT STAKE >>>

The Tacoma City Council recently voted to create a Revenue Development Area in Grit City. The idea behind it, naturally, is to increase revenue â€" among other things.

When Baarsma and company voted to create the RDA, it also meant Tacoma would be applying for $1 million dollars a year over 25 years from Washington State’s LIFT Program. LIFT is a state program overseen by the Community and Economic Revitalization Board that awards money to municipalities for things like parking infrastructure, right of way and streetscape improvements.

Tacoma made their LIFT application public today, buy linking to it from the city Web site.

To check out Tacoma’s LIFT application, which could pump as much as $25 million into the City of Destiny, click here.

I hear more pirates down the hall.  Gotta hide.
