Merende to open next week

STEPH DEROSA: HAVE TO WAIT ANOTHER WEEK FOR ITALIAN >>>

I ran into uber-fantastic co-owner of Merende, Ian Lombardi, today at about 11 a.m.  I've been anxiously awaiting their grand opening and dying to grub on the fruit of Lombardi's culinary labor.

Apparently the opening is set for (hopefully) Sept. 22.  Lombardi was nothing but patient and kind as I asked him to give me the Merende lowdown.  This proves his outstanding ability to be nice to even the sweatiest and smelliest of guests, seeing as how I had just left the gym.

Or maybe he really is open, and it was my body odor that made the place "not open until Sept. 22."

Hmmmm.  I'm onto you Ian Lombardi!

The many faces of Maria Jost

RON SWARNER: STORY BEHIND STORYTALE >>>

Mariajostopening Maria Jost, among many other traits, is known around Tacoma for being wicked smart, fun, adventurous and her contribution to The Helm’s Juried Show back in March. Remember her tree silhouettes and body part collage combinations illustrating the biological connection that all living things share? So beautiful. So cool.

Jost has a new solo show, Storytale, hanging at the Black Water Café through October. This show is inspired by her tree silhouettes, except reversing the concept â€" body parts with elements (leaves, waves) as the collage treatment.

The body parts?

Faces. Beautiful, eerie, wonderful faces.

“The show took me three months to complete,” explained Jost at the opening Friday inside the Black Water. “I studied faces for all angles â€" maybe too long â€" as I had to power through the work at the end to make the show opening.”

The rush doesn’t show.

Mariajostthree Mariajostone Mariajosttwo Mariajostfive The 12 collage-infused ink and watercolor paintings are, as she claims, “open to viewer interpretation and embellishment.” I recognized a few faces â€" both on the wall and during her packed opening night party.

“The project consumed my life,” adds Jost. “But I’m extremely please with the results.”

You will be, too.

Fire breath broken down

JAKE DE PAUL: A TASTE OF INDIA >>>

Firebreath I have a friend â€" let’s call him dad â€" who can’t cope with Indian spices. He wouldn't think twice about polishing off a bag of jalapeño-flavored potato chips, a plate of sashimi with wasabi, or the Tideflats hot dog at The Red Hot, but he stays away from coriander, turmeric, cumin and so on. The real reason for his reluctance to try Indian food, he later confessed, is that he was once dragged to an Indian buffet and the strange orange sauces and red chicken freaked him out.

I find Indian fare a visual turn-on for the same reasons "my friend" panicked (though, for the record, I'm not a buffet devotee). I like the vibrant red of a marinated tandoori chicken and the rich red-orange sauce that blankets a dish of butter chicken. The lure of food that looks sexy and packs a punch is enough to interrupt my Third Thursday Art Walk this week to catch Chef CJ Singh’s discussion on cooking with Indian spices at the Tacoma Art Museum. Singh, chef and owner of Tacoma's Gateway to India restaurant, spices up TAM Thursday beginning at 6 p.m. And as every third Thursday, admission to TAM is free.

The lecture is part of the festivities associated with TAM's new exhibit What Is a Trade? Donald Fels and Signboard Painters of South India that opened Sept. 13.

What if you checked out the Banned Book Club’s discussion on said book at the Tempest Lounge?

Check it.
