Enchantment under the sea

ROXANNE MURPHY: TIME FOR PROM >>>

Prom-poster-2008 Anyone who attended last year's prom at Sanford and Son Antiques KNOWS that this year's function is one that really can't be missed.

The event takes place in the library of this cool, colorful maze of an establishment at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 and will feature live music by Girl Trouble, the Tough Times with DJ Infinity spinning mad cuts.

People will sport both vintage and classic prom attire and the theme this year is "Anchors Aweigh," so you might even see some sailor suits and green dresses. Most important, the punch will be spiked, indeed (that's why this party is for 21 and older only).

The tickets for prom are just $20 in advance (or $25 at the door), which will be a fund-raiser for C.A.R.S., Companion Animal Rescue Society. Showing your ticket at Vanity, Funkoma and Relish will also get you 20 percent discounts (great prom stuff!) and you'll receive a 25 percent discount at Ravenous (yum!).

In addition to purchasing these limited tickets at Sanford and Son, the official prom committee will be hosting a mobile box office. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. head to The Red Hot for $2 beer night, and there you'll find the committee sittin' pretty, waiting to sell you access to this must-see party that will help save homeless pets.

I have no idea what I'm going to wear this year, but I'm heading out now to take advantage of those discounts, and see what I can find.

Salmon crazy

KEN SWARNER: THE FISH THAT DEFINES A REGION >>>

Salmon Salmon â€" the quintessential symbol of life in the Pacific Northwest â€" needs no introduction in these parts. Salmon connects us to our region â€" makes us feel lucky to live close to the native Pacific stocks, and keeps us heart healthy and robust. In this week’s Volcano I examined our favorite fish from a variety of angles, but for those looking for more information, click on the State’s Department of Ecology site for in-depth analysis. Or, for those ready to cook at home, visit The Salmons for a large listing of recipes. Finally, if you’d care to do your part to keep us all in the pink, contact the Wild Olympic Salmon organization.

Fire some up tonight.

News to Us

MICHAEL SWAN: NEWS STORIES IN THIS WEEK’S VOLCANO >>>

Bunney buster
A recent press release from current Pierce County Councilmember and County Executive candidate Shawn Bunney landed on Matt Driscoll’s desk on Oct. 7, the same day the Pierce County Council voted to endorse recommendations for a county economic stimulus plan presented by the Economic Development Division. The title of the press release: “Council approves Bunney’s economic stimulus plan.” The only problem with that is it’s not true, at least according to Democrats on the Pierce County Council. Full story here.

Curbing youth violence
Despite a few hitches, Tacoma efforts to curb youth violence are off to a good start. Tacoma City Councilmembers recently heard from city staff and organizers of the Youth Violence and Gang Prevention Program, which stumbled out of the gate, but seems to be getting its legs, based on preliminary reports. Full story here.

Pierce County quality of life meter
Two dead birds from Pierce County tested positive for the dreaded West Nile Virus this week â€" proving West Nile doesn’t just reside in Podunk farm towns east of the mountains, bubba. It’s everywhere! Spread by blood sucking mosquitoes, West Nile has the potential to lead to meningitis and encephalitis in humans, and, well, kill the hell out of some crows and magpies. Bad week to be a bird in Pierce County. Grab full meter readings here

Meet re-Art

SUZY STUMP: JURIED SHOW OF RECYCLED STUFF >>>

Re-art re-Art is a bit of an exhibitionist.  re-Art likes to be judged.  re-Art is sick ‘n’ tired of being confined to damn paintings.  re-Art is craft-y â€" incorporating recycled and reclaimed materials.  re-Art doesn’t want to be talked about like this any more.

Hey! Check out the re-Art ’08 juried art show Saturday, Oct. 18 at Gallery Madera. Twenty-two Northwest artists found creative ways to re-use items headed for landfills.

Gallery Madera press release: Submissions were juried by three Tacomans well immersed in the energies of the local art community:  Julie Bennett, owner of Tacoma's urbanXchange â€" an urban oasis of new and recycled clothing, Paula Tutmarc-Johnson, owner of Two Vaults Gallery â€" an eclectically appointed fine art gallery gracing the slopes of downtown Tacoma; and Rick Semple â€" artist and notorious Goodwill and Re-Store frequenter.

Hey! Thirty percent of all sales will benefit the Tacoma Food Co-op and the Sierra Club Zero Waste Committee.

re-Art says going to the mall to look at stuff and not buy is crazy.

Galloping Gertie's

STEPH DEROSA: I KNOW WHERE YOU CAN GET A HAIRCUT >>>

Bar-Exam-Galloping-Gerties We took the Thorne Lane exit into Tillicum and after a mile stretch on Union Avenue we had passed about 12 barber shops before reaching Galloping Gertie's. Twelve barber shops within one mile? Are you kidding me? I know Tillicum is primarily an off-base military town filled with young crew-cut men, but TWELVE barber shops? I was thinking 12 dive bars would be more appropriate for a street just off a major military base, don't you?

Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating on the amount of barber shops, but there were at least eight of them.

More important than any haircut, The KAke and I were jonesin' for a liquid lunch, so into Galloping Gertie's side door lounge we went. Right away Arlette greeted us like we were old friends, and old friends is what we quickly became.

Check out what I found here.

I needed this Show

JENNIFER JOHNSON: THE SHOE SHOW >>>

The-Shoe-Show “Rainy, 50 degree weather welcomes you home to Seattle, or if you’re lucky enough, this is just a layover before Hawaii,” the flight attendant smirked as the plane prepared to touch down at SeaTac airport Monday. Returning from a weekend of 95 degree weather in Arizona was difficult. Hoping for something to lift my spirits, I opened my mailbox. Inside a love letter from The Shoe Show on Sixth Avenue in Tacoma announced that it had reached its six-month mark this month.

Check out what bargains I found here.

Satan and Stains

WEEKLY VOLCANO STAFF: MORE LIVE THAN YOU >>>

Boxcar-Satan Boxcar Satan
“We always do better at off beat venues,” says Boxcar Satan guitarist and vocalist Sanford Allen. “Weird little venues kind of suit us best. That was the environment we were born in.”

Luckily for Allen and his band, San Antonio’s Boxcar Satan will play Bob’s Java Jive in Tacoma tonight. As far as venues go, it doesn’t get much more offbeat, little or weird than the Jive. Though this will be Boxcar Satan’s first stop in Tacoma in their 15 years as a band, and obviously the band’s first time playing at Bob’s Java Jive, through what he has seen and heard Allen compares the Jive to San Antonio’s famous, now defunct punk club Tacoland â€" a place where Boxcar Satan cut its teeth. “The Java Jive looks like the type of place where we’ll have fun” says Allen.

Boxcar Satan has an eye- and ear-catching mix of old, dusty blues, cowboy murder ballads and straight ahead punk to hang its hat on. â€" Matt Driscoll

[Bob’s Java Jive, Lozen, Boxcar Satan, Mico de Noche, Thursday, Oct. 9, 8 p.m., 2102 S. Tacoma Way, Tacoma, 253.475.9843]

Bill Stains
Since he first broke into the folk scene in 1966, Bill Stains has been compared to Woody Guthrie, and his tunes have been recorded by artists such as Peter, Paul, & Mary, Makem and Clancy, Nanci Griffith, Mason Williams, The Highwaymen, Glen Yarborough, Jerry Jeff Walker and Grandpa Jones. Diversity is a key element to Stains’ appeal as he moves effortlessly between traditional folk and straight-up country ballads. With well over 25 recordings to his credit, he has a posy of material to draw from for his live performances. â€" Tony Engelhart
