Fancy spots, scary spots

SUZY STUMP: CALENDAR GIRL >>>

Tour of Urban Living
OK, you live here â€" here being the suburbs. Mrs. Kravitz next door drives you insane with her uptight attitude. Kids jumping their Schwinns off wooden ramps irritate. And the neighbor’s dog? I know. That neighborhood is not you.

It doesn’t take a Microsoft employee to realize that downtown Tacoma is now an urban center capable of entertaining and sustaining a downtown populace. Condos and apartments are sprouting up at a rapid pace with the coffee shops, restaurants and boutiques to support them. Whether you plan to leave the burbs or not, this weekend is an opportunity to sneak a peek into how the other half lives. The Tour of Urban Living is a foot-on-the-ground and up-the-elevator tour of condos, townhomes and apartments in the city of Tacoma.

[Downtown Tacoma, Oct. 11-12, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., free, self-guided tour, Pantages Theater homebase (maps, coffee), Ninth and Broadway, Tacoma]

Haunted-head Haunted Asylum
With all the political and international turmoil, this is shaping up to be the scariest Halloween ever! For instance, artist Ben Isitt and the Freighthouse Square have teamed up to resurrect the Black Lake Medical Asylum. The following release has been, er, released:

“In the winter of 1939, construction began on the state-of-the-art medical facility, Black Lake Medical Asylum and Research Facility. Dr. Herbert West, the famed East Coast neuroscientist, was appointed as the first chief of staff of what was supposed to be the premiere neurosurgical research facility on the West Coast. Soon after he took up his post in the spring of 1940, things at Black Lake started to go very wrong … This is the story of Black Lake Asylum …”

Of course, the timeliness of this announcement leads some of us journalistic types to suspect that the haunting is not for real. And it doesn’t matter. With the help of professional actors, outstanding artistry and high-tech gadgetry, the transformation of the Freighthouse Square from a happy shopping center to a blood-curdling nightmare is possible, even if down deep we know it’s not based on fact. Or is it?

The Rain City Hearse Club will hold a rally at the Asylum tonight, too.

[Freighthouse Square, Oct. 11, 6 p.m. to midnight, $13 per patient in advance at participating Freighthouse merchants or at the door (there’s an ATM on-site; those things scare me every time), 2501 E. D St., Tacoma]

Day of the Dead

MICHAEL SWAN: WANT TO BE DEAD? >>>

Halloween terrifies me every year. I cower behind darkened doors, hoping the pint-size ghosts and goblins don’t invade when they discover that I’m keeping the candy for myself.

Time for a change of tradition.

This year, introduce mini-monsters to the Mexican practice of El Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead). Descending from an ancient Aztec ritual, the festivities honor departed family members while celebrating the continuing cycle of life. Traditionally celebrated on Nov. 2, El Día de los Muertos â€" the Day of the Dead observed by Hispanic cultures â€" is actually spread out over a period of days that begins on Oct. 27. Each day represents different categories of the deceased, from ancient Aztec warriors to lost babes-in-arms. Nice.

Actually, in Tacoma, the festivities start today.

Kiddies (and the young at heart) can create their Day of the Dead masks today at the free papier-mâché workshop beginning at 10 a.m. in the basement of Epworth-LeSourd Church. Oh, scary basement! Learn how to make a skull mask, Dia de los Muertos type figure or work on a group project to be used in this year’s Sixth Avenue Procession (Sunday, Nov. 2, 6 p.m., Masa restaurant). Basic supplies will be provided â€" masking tape and wrapping paper cardboard tubes are appreciated.

If you miss this morning's workshop, there are two more â€" Oct. 18 and 25, same location.

Squeak and Squawk draws closer

RON SWARNER: SQUEAK AND SQUAWK >>>

Seanblack-water As you read in this week’s Weekly Volcano the Squeak and Squawk Music Festival kicks off Thursday. Bands from all over the Northwest and beyond will be stopping in Tacoma to unleash their magic. Check out the lineup here.

The official Squeak and Squawk program will be inserted into Thursday’s Weekly Volcano, as well as thrown around town smartly.  The Helm gallery brain trust is handwriting the program, including the advertisements. It’s freakin’ cool. Squeak and Squawk co-producer and co-owner of the Helm Sean Alexander is busy drawing it right now at the Black Water Café.

Pick up the program Thursday and enjoy its splendor. Please pay special attention to the advertisements. These folks believe in Tacoma's music scene.

Salty's wine dinner

JAKE DE PAUL: WALLA WALLA WINE WINE >>>

First things first: I love attending wine dinners almost as much as I can’t stand attending wine dinners. Wine dinners are A. educational; B. a good place for like-minded fellowship; C. tedious; D. bargains; or E. all of the above. Well, if the wine dinners I’ve attended over the years are any indication â€" and I’m sure I’ve attended well over 43 â€" the correct answer is E. Wine dinners, more often than not are informative and boring, good values and a great place to meet other food and wine enthusiasts like you.

Want to try one?

Salty’s at Redondo will serve a six-course Waterbrook Winery dinner Thursday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. Ahi crostini, baked brie, crab bisque, filet mignon â€" the menu looks tasty.  And Waterbrook has lined up six wines for the night.

Attendees will receive a ticket for a free tasting at Waterbrook’s tasting room, First and Main in downtown Walla Walla. Hang on to that gem in case you find yourself in downtown Walla Walla.

The dinner is a whopping $90 per person.

Fill your Empty Bowl with soup

SUZY STUMP: CALENDAR GIRL >>>

Bowl There are not many foods you can philosophize about effectively (what does a hamburger mean?), but soup is one of them. It’s the perfect winter food, it’s rich and healthy, it’s just so damn ... warm. You could probably come up with many more fitting theories why soup is so metaphorical. So, come embarrass your peers by waxing poetic at Empty Bowls where 1,000 bowls created by professional and amateur potters will be on sale to benefit Pierce County food banks. Admire (and take home) the pretty bowls at $10 a pop.

Oh, and there’s soup, baby. The Swiss, Ale House, Vuelve a la Vida and Mother Earth Farms will put Campbell’s to shame.

Candidates' Forum Monday

MICHAEL SWAN:THE RACE TO THE FINISH LINE >>>

Ah, the political season. Swaying chandeliers casting crystalline glares across the movers and shakers of sound-bite squabbles. Crested, folded napkins wedged into snifters, wilting in the drunken haze of chortled exchanges more revealing than they ought to be. Knowing gazes and frowning throat-clearings punctuating perfectly orchestrated gala affairs full of couples waltzing the networking-mingle waltz of getting ahead and, quite possibly, getting some head while they're at it. "Oh, senator, you're so naughty," etc.

This is not Tacoma.

Tacoma does this:

North End Neighborhood Council's Annual Candidates’ Forum
Monday, Oct., 13, 6 p.m.
University of Puget Sound’s Trimble Hall, in the Forum Room, North 14th and North Lawrence across from UPS Student Center rotunda

Candidates invited include those in the races for:
State Attorney General
State Treasurer
27th District Representative, Pos. 1 & 2
27th District Senate
Pierce County Executive
Pierce County Council Pos. 4

Other candidates may be announced at the Forum.
