First Night the rest of your life

PAUL SCHRAG: JUMP START YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS >>>

It’s that time of year again. Y’know, when we start a new one. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to be done with 2008. For many of us, an unofficial component of the New Year celebration involves making unofficial oaths to transcend shortcomings, self-improve and grow. Until we come up with a less stifling and boring term, we call them resolutions.

To help jump start your journey toward self-renewal, the Weekly Volcano has carefully selected a few New Year’s Eve activities to get you in the mood. For the sake of simplicity, we’ve chosen activities that will occur within a couple of blocks of one another. They’re all brought to you by the good folks at First Night Tacoma-Pierce County. Get started here.

File under Awesome

PAUL SCHRAG: NEW TACOMA BOOKSTORE >>>

Meta-Books Tacoma has some great bookstores. Add to the list one Meta Books, which has opened quietly on Pacific Avenue near the University of Washington Tacoma. The store owned by former criminal defense attorney Timothy Lohraff doesn’t have a clear specialty, unless you consider hand-selected, generally awesome and strange books a specialty. I swore off reading books a while back, largely because I need to try putting to use some of the knowledge contained within the books I’ve already read. But after five minutes in Meta Books, I nearly fell off the wagon.

“I’m a lifelong reader, and I love bookstores,” says Lohraff. “I was a criminal defense attorney for 20 years. This is sort of a lifelong dream.”

25360 Hip-hop Awards

JOSE GUTIERREZ JR.: THEY DID IT BEST IN 2008 >>>

Xperience So, I’m leanin’ back enjoying my fall of 2008 (my presidential candidate won!) contemplating all of my years as a contributor, creator, writer, journalist and editor with many different publications from Seaspot in Seattle to RapSheet in Los Angeles to The Source in New York and Xxplosive in The Bay. I have always wanted some recognition to be made for artists from The Pacific Northwest region because there are powerfully talented people up here (even if the business sense has ALWAYS been absent â€" not for the rockers, but definitely for the hip-hop heads) … so along with Live From I-5 Radio’s Awards, I decided to put together a list of cats who do their thang-thang from or represent The 25360 … Here goes … The 25360 Awards. You may or may not agree … That is not a big deal unless you use your voice to vote and make a case for the 2nd Annual. Enjoy at your own risk!

Extra, extra!

LAUREN NAPIER: HEAR ALL ABOUT IT >>>

Paperboys Hailing from Vancouver- the Canadian version- The Paperboys continue to defy genres, offering innovative combinations of folk, Latin, acoustic, alternative country, soul, and whatever else your mind can dream of at its creative best. The band is comprised of seven constant members who provide vocals and sprinklings of unusual instruments including the jarana, banjo, saxophone, and other musical eccentricities- the very basis of what makes this band a pleasure and experience to listen to. There is no confining label box in which you can place these musicians, but they also wouldn't want that. It's no fun being pigeonholed or labeled, and not nearly as exciting for the audience. Not like showing up and seeing what you get from The Paperboys on any particular night, anyway. The band presents a brilliant live show- an act that has honored such stages as The Folk Alliance Festival, The Boston Folk Festival, Bumbershoot, and other renowned festivals. A bilingual band with an untraditional approach to the rock music scene: The Paperboys deliver folk music that is shred-tastic.

Tonight, for New Year's Eve, The Paperboys and the Vicci Martinez band will be at Jazzbones in Tacoma.

Broho Flyer Countdown to 2009 … Three years away from the end of the world according to the Mayans! What better way to bring in the New Year than at one of Olympia’s signature bars? The Brotherhood, a must-see for any visitor to the City of O, is hosting an affair to remember tonight for New Year’s Eve. The personable joint - in the heart of downtown Olympia - is always guaranteed to deliver fun, friendly faces, mouth-watering drinks and a truly Olympian atmosphere â€" and to add to the normal good times, The Brotherhood is offering the best $2 cover money can buy. For your dancing pleasure or if you want to chill in a booth with a bottle of bubbly, you will still be served with quality sounds â€" DJ Dead Air is rockin’ the joint until 2 a.m. And what’s even better, you ask? New Year's Eve at the Jive

MATT DRISCOLL: HATING ON HATERS >>>

Emeperor Moth As the saying goes â€" to each their own. For a cliché, I think it’s a pretty good one, and I truly believe it. After all, judging is for judgers (known as haters in the realm of rap and hip-hop) and piss on those people, whatever you call them. The world would simply be a better place if every douchebag stopped thinking they know what’s best for others. But now I’m getting preachy. Anyway, Emperor Moth â€" an artsy, indie and experimental musical amalgamation best suited for those with ironic hairstyles and ill fitting pantaloons â€" has a MySpace page that I find just maddening. It’s hard for me to understand. In a world where most every band has given up on the idea of having a legitimate Web site in favor of simply inhabiting Myspace like the rest of the masses â€" why a band would construct its Myspace page in a way that’s â€" quite literally â€" impossible to decipher? Can someone explain to me what the point of all the crazy graphics and colors is if people can’t read a word of any of it because the font is invisible thanks to the intense, seizure-inducing background? I hate that shit. Whose good idea is that? Do these bands hope to remain unheard of? Do they just like to piss off hack music writers hoping to find some quick info to nab moments before deadline? If that’s the case, then mission accomplished. Oh, well. To each their own, I suppose. To each their own.

Tonight, Emeperor Moth will inhabit Bob's Java Jive like a big, old wool sweater - and proceed to gnaw the place to shreds with their unique brand of indie rock.
