2good2toss

MATT DRISCOLL: IT'S LIKE CRAIGSLIST WITHOUT HOOKERS >>>

Landfill Normally, I like to think I have at least a decent idea of what the city of Tacoma and Pierce County are up to. From time to time I’ve been known to flip on City Council meetings on Tuesday evening â€" beer in hand, mind you. I’ve even been known to pay attention to monotonously boring crap circulating the city or county buildings that would probably put most decent folks to sleep â€" like self serving city of Tacoma press releases and inane proclamations and proposals that will get you nothing but strange looks and sympathy if ever you bring them up in the company of average people. Most folks have no idea what their city or county governments are doing on a daily basis â€" and, given the general lack of excitement or intrigue â€" this is nothing if not understandable.

However, earlier this week an e-mail from the City of Tacoma arrived in my inbox â€" and the subject was something that, even boring ass, city council watching me, had no idea existed.

While it’s not terribly new, and â€" as a T-town mover and shaker you may already be hip to it â€" the e-mail touted the city and county’s involvement with the 2good2toss.com program, a municipal-backed craigslist of sorts that aims to keep still usable stuff out of landfills by finding takers through the magic of the Internet. Created in 2003, 2good2toss is a statewide program sponsored by the Department of Ecology, currently active in 14 cities and counties. The Pierce County version of 2good2toss â€" 2good2toss.com/Pierce â€" is the most successful of the bunch, having kept 420 tons of crap out of landfills since its inception and boasting 6,800 members.

It’s a fairly basic setup. Once a Pierce County resident registers, they can list a reusable item for free or for sale on the site for up to 90 days. The maximum price allowed is $199, though much of the stuff listed can be had for much less â€" even free.

“We consistently receive positive feedback from residents about how 2good2toss.com is a great resource,” said Tom Voigt, Tacoma/Pierce County site administrator in the distributed press release.

Who knew? I certainly didn’t. Maybe next time I’m looking for a slightly worn foosball table I’ll give 2good2toss a shot. It couldn’t hurt, and if it does, indeed, keep something out of the landfill â€" that’s even better.

What will Britney Spears do today?

MATT DRISCOLL: WHERE WILL SHE SPEND TIME IN TACOMA? >>>

Volcano-cover-article-4_9 Britney Spears is, in fact, in Tacoma today. She’ll be bringing her train wreck of silicone and broken dreams â€" known as the Circus Tour â€" to the Tacoma Dome tonight.

Knowing no paper in town â€" not even a rag with the righteous ethical standards of the Weekly Volcano â€" could pass up an opportunity to put Spears’ celebrity stained mug on its cover, we decided to seize the moment and offer you, our reader, a Britney Spears Issue like no other. This way, like the others, we can help you get your Britney Spears fill and, if we’re lucky, down the road serve as masturbatory fodder for 13-year-old boys.

It’s a win/win.

Since Spears is in Tacoma and surely needs something to occupy her time besides constant runs to Starbucks for 36-ounce iced coffee drinks, I asked the esteemed Weekly Volcano staff to offer the Southern Pop Meltdown Machine a few suggestions about ways she could spend her time while in the City of Destiny.

What should Spears do in Tacoma? How would it go down? We offer our thoughts on the subject on the Weekly Volcano’s Web site.

Is Tacoma Safe and Clean?

PAUL SCHRAG: CLEANER AND SLIGHTLY SAFE, MAYBE >>>

News-to-us-article-4_9 It’s been almost a year since city officials announced their intention to clean up Tacoma neighborhoods and cut crime within the city by 50 percent under an aggressive new program called Safe & Clean. Let’s just say it. They didn’t hit 50 percent crime reduction. But they did manage to mobilize dozens of citizen/city staff teams, who have cleaned up nearly 250 tons of trash in Tacoma neighborhoods. And prostitution is down 77 percent. Car theft is down more than 20 percent. But overall, crime is either down 5 percent, or up 1.5 percent, depending on which data set you’re looking at.

Seven-Oh-One review

Rest-review-article-4_9 ANNOUNCER: A quick call was made to Meconi’s earlier this month.

“Hello, Meconi’s? What’s the name of the restaurant next to you?”

“No, not Matador. The new one right next to you, by the park.”

“No, it’s not Capers anymore and yes, I’m serious.” There was a pause and silence. “Oh, you didn’t notice anything had changed? OK, thank you.”

And that sums up the visual impact of the sale of Capers and subsequent birth of Seven-Oh-One. This new bistro has slipped hermit crab-like into the space at 701 Pacific Ave. in downtown Tacoma. Owner Patti Iseman is new to Tacoma’s dicey sustenance game having formerly owned a very casual dining spot in Gig Harbor, the Hy-Iu-Hee-Hee. A bistro in Tacoma is a different animal entirely. Hopes are high.

Weekly Volcano editorial

MATT DRISCOLL: HAD TOO MUCH TO THINK LAST NIGHT >>>

What the fuck is going on in the world?

With the rampant string of heinous crimes that have recently gone down in Tacoma and Pierce County, it’s enough to make you wonder. Kids being executed by their dad. Cabbies getting killed. 50-year-old women being gunned down.

This is the world we live in.

In this week’s issue of the Weekly Volcano I took a moment to wonder aloud whether the economic crisis is playing into the pain and despair we’re all feeling â€" and seeing on a nearly nightly basis on local news broadcasts.

And if it is, as a community, what can we do to help?

Gods of Thunder

CHUCK DULA: KISS TRIBUTE TONIGHT AT HELL'S KITCHEN >>>

Gods of Thunder Gods of Thunder make a living pretending to be KISS. They wear all of the appropriate makeup, play all of the appropriate riffs, and make all of the inappropriate jokes. I wonder if they even have a Vinnie Vincent look-a-like that stands in for the drunken Frehley look-a-like three fourths of the way through the show? Will they play any of the songs from the album Dynasty in which Anton Fry, a session drummer, played all of the drum tracks for a violently inadequate Peter Criss? Is their tour bus lined with posters of other tribute bands like Rain, KISSexy (a five-piece all-female KISS tribute band), or the only band that makes it hard for me to hold food down â€" KRY? You won’t know unless you go see them tonight at Hell's Kitchen.

Indian Valley Line

MARK THOMAS DEMING: TONIGHT AT THE NEW FRONTIER >>>

Indian Valley Line Flyer Is it just me or is alt-country dead? Dead in a good way, I mean. Dead the way postmodernism is dead. Not because the art failed, but because it outlived its name. Because it was a name built for failure, a name coined obsolete. When the alternative rescues that which it supposedly alternates from, it becomes it. So don’t call Indian Valley Line alt-country. Or roots rock. Or Americana. Throw away the affixes and go see their show at The New Frontier tonight. Listen to the syrup-sweet guitar of Ryan Lynch, the gunshot drums of Emo Ben, and Bubba’s (I refuse to say honest and heartfelt) honest and heartfelt vocals. (Bubba’s from Seattle, the other two from Sonoma, Calif.) And don’t leave without their new full-length, Peggy, Sonoma and a Boxcar.
