Playing Under the Stars

SUZY STUMP: ACTING LIKE A KID FOR YOUR KIDS >>>

My posse’s on Broadway Saturday as the girls and I strap on our shades for an evening outside at the park.

With Broadway between 10th and 11th in downtown Tacoma blocked off, dinner under a large tent, spoiled by unlimited beer and wine, and amongst the most playful of playful adults â€" we’ll be tooling in Pierce Transit Park for the Children’s Museum of Tacoma’s annual dinner fund-raiser: Playing Under the Stars.

As one of this region’s most worthwhile dinner tickets, Playing Under the Stars guarantees us a fun evening out with delicious food In an entertaining backyard theme.

I can’t wait to act like a child in public. At least this time I’ll have good reason: a Children’s Museum of Tacoma reason.

[Pierce Transit Park, Saturday, June 20, 6:30-10:30 p.m., $100 per person includes hors d’ouvres, drinks and dinner, 936 Broadway, Tacoma, 253.627.6031]

Chilled summer teas

JENNIFER JOHNSON: MAD GOOD >>>

As the weather grows warmer, I begin modifying my beverage routine. Hot coffee or tea in the morning becomes a room temperature or iced version of its former self. Hoping to stay away from dubious bottled green teas packed with corn syrup and the same amount of junk as a Pepsi, I posed my question to Maureen McHugh, co-owner of Mad Hat Tea Company in downtown Tacoma. Absolutely perfect was her recommendation of Creamsicle tea, a caffeine-free blend of Rooibos and vanilla Honeybush loose-leaf South African teas that she sells.

Just as the frozen treat of the same name, the resulting steeped tea was naturally sweet, packed with citrus and mellowed with creamy vanilla; no sweetener needed. Another favorite of mine that’s excellent cold is the tart red hibiscus made popular by Celestial Seasoning as Red Zinger.

Adding brown sugar before allowing it to cool diffuses tartness and replaces it with pleasant sweetness.

For those about to rock

WEEKLY VOLCANO: BETTER UPDATE YOUR CALENDAR FIRST >>>

This just in, T-Town rockers: AC/DC has rescheduled their upcoming show at the Tacoma Dome. Originally, the show was scheduled to go down on Sunday, August 30, but has now been moved to Monday, August 31. Tickets purchased for the original date will be honored on the new night - and, apparently, there are still tickets available.

Go see Thee Oh Sees

BOBBLE TIKI: TONIGHT IN OLYMPIA >>>

Thee Oh Sees When Bobble Tiki first became acquainted with San Francisco’s Thee Oh Sees â€" they were Thee Ohsees. See the difference? It’s really not much of one â€" which is why it’s fairly unimportant in the scheme of things. The important thing is the band is still churning out some of the best tunes you’re liable to hear anywhere â€" and certainly on a Tuesday night in Oly. When Thee Oh Sees classify themselves as pop/folk/psychedelic on MySpace, they mean it. They’re exactly the type of band that Olympia should slurp up like cheap drinks at McCoy’s. They’re arty, but not to a fault. They’re smart, but not to the point of being alienating. They’re definitely indie, but not just because it’s cool. According to Wikipedia, The Oh Sees “began as a way for John Dwyer (of Coachwhips, Pink and Brown, Landed, Yikes, Burmese, The Hospitals, etc.) to release his instrumental, experimental home recordings. However, over the course of five albums it has evolved into a full band.” Thank god. The results are awesome.
