Bluegrass fix tonight

MATT DRISCOLL: DEADWOOD REVIVAL AT DOYLE'S TONIGHT >>>

Deadwood-Revial-7_9 Contrary to what some will have you believe, Tacoma is the type of town where bluegrass can thrive. Just because white folks with trust funds and Subarus have stuck their flag in the genre (a flag covered with Apple stickers and ticket stubs from that summer they followed Dave Matthews Band to “decompress” after the rigors of the college drum circle circuit), it doesn’t mean the music’s roots will just fade into nothing and become meaningless. No, bluegrass will always be a genre created by hardscrabble immigrants and played with the passion of calloused hands. Bluegrass, at heart, is blue collar â€" and the same thing can be said about Tacoma.

For this reason, Deadwood Revival’s foot stompin set at Doyle’s tonight is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Whether Subarus from the North End descend on Tacoma’s favorite public house in droves, or the dusty and faded denim of our city’s south and east sides shows up in bigger numbers, Thursday at Doyle’s is sure to be a good time. For fans of bluegrass, this one’s a no brainer.

Jazz under the party cloudy sky

PAUL SCHRAG: JAZZ UNDER THE STARS >>>

Kareem-Kandi Not sure what this means astrologically speaking, but it’s time again for the annual Jazz Under the Stars summer concert series, which kicks off tonight at the outdoor amphitheater of the Mary Baker Russell Music Center on the Pacific Lutheran University campus.

In the wake of a rare double eclipse month, Jazz Under the Stars carries on with a decade of high-octane, free, outdoor jazz concerts at PLU, and regularly features big talent, emphasizing the nice collection of jazz artists we have residing here in the Pacific Northwest.

Show organizers say the event series has only been rained out twice (it heads indoors if it rains), so pack yourself a picnic, or enjoy free refreshments.

This year’s kick off features well-known/loved Tacoma saxophonist Kareem Kandi.

Moon "Close the pod bay door, Gerty."

The Grand Cinema hosts this superior science fiction film.

Also opening tomorrow: Bruno and I Love You Beth Cooper

4. Distinguished writers, poets, playwrights, short story writers, and people who scribble on cocktail napkins will step up to the mic from 7-9 p.m. as part of the Distinguished Writer Series and Open Mic at King’s Books.

Rapping the open range

MARK THOMAS DEMING: SANDMAN THE RAPPIN’ COWBOY IS THE REAL DEAL >>>

Sandman His name is Chris Sand. He grew up in Ronan, Montana on the Flathead Reservation.  He now lives in a house in Dunn Center that he bought for $1,000.  He’s a truck driver when he has work, which he currently does not.  He has a bulging disc in his back from a lifetime on the farm.  He’s also one of the most original and inventive musicians anywhere.  He’s a cowboy who raps. Read the full interview here.

Bead it

SUZY STUMP: PUGET SOUND BEAD FESTIVAL >>>

Beads There is no way in hell you’re going to the Bellevue Bead Festival in November because you are boycotting those bluegrass-stealing bastards.

So now you’re going to go to the Puget Sound Bead Festival at Hotel Murano today through Sunday, just like you’re going to do all that other stuff you can do now that American Idol and Michael Jackson are over. You’re going to the Bead Festival, and you’re going to have the choice of buying gems or beads or silver or minerals or crystals or just saying, the hell with it, and buying some fine jewelry, which you know you’ve wanted to do all along anyway. Haven’t you?
