Fall Arts Guide is coming

MICHAEL SWAN: RAMPING UP FOR OUR FALL ARTS GUIDE >>>

Whoa, check out the calendar. Summer is about done (boo hoo) and fall is on the way. And with the fall comes a slew of fun things to do, buy, eat, hear and more.

Stop it. You're broke. We know.

Times are hard. And we feel your pain.

Yes, we feel your pain but that’s not stopping us from producing our annual Fall Arts Guide.  It will hit the South Sound streets Thursday, Sept. 17 chocked full of dance, theater, classical music, visual arts, literary events and more.

Yes, the recession is a buzzkill for the South Sound arts scene. However, the arts community is striving to make culture affordable. We need to continue to support the local arts scene. We can’t have violinists digging around in our trash. That’s not right.

If you’re a South Sound arts organization, please send us your upcoming calendar here. We don’t want to leave anyone out.

If you would like to support the Weekly Volcano's keepsake Fall Arts Guide, and reach our powerful, niche market, contact our advertising department at 253.584.1212 or by e-mail here. If you want to help pay for an arts organization's advertisement in our Fall Arts Guide, we can help you set that up.

Look for the Fall Arts Guide in the Weekly Volcano and in your favorite hangout Sept. 17.

The report states that workers in the Tacoma Metropolitan Division had an average (mean) hourly wage of $20.83 during May 2008, roughly 3 percent above the nationwide average of $20.32.

When will we see stats for 2009?

The report for Tacoma may be viewed here.

Onward to Burning Man!

POP: I’M ABOUT FIVE HOURS AWAY >>>

Burn-Logo Stayed the night at Summer Lake hippie camp commune. Driving in, the red Christmas lights over the hand painted “office” sign shone below blue black clouds christened by an almost full moon. The romance of the Oregon Outback was in the air, almost as lovely as Laura's former Monsoon Room lounge on Hilltop.

Handmade beeswax candles greeted Jaguar Heart and I, then an almost immobile, dusty Dwayne moaned, "Howdy," like a rope stretching boat to moor at Thea’s Landing.

"You git the Streamline," he belched.

"Thank you," I replied.

"S'ovah there,” he said, pointing a red laser outside to a vintage, 1950s silver, worse-for-the-wear rig in the dust.

"Thank you," I said. "Umm, Dwayne? It has linens, right?"

Umm, yup,” he said with a blank look.

I cautiously moved my eyes to Jaguar and with keen, super seasoned Burner awareness I paused.

"Dwayne, they're clean, right?” I asked. “The sheets?"

His less than focused gaze remained unchanged as he slowly remembered, "Welp, we had 200 Burners campin' last night. Lot of 'em in the springs. I think I forgot to change em â€" the sheets. Girl who slept there looked real nice though. Maybe they weren't used much."

I am thankful for my REI sleeping bag, and my anal organized approach to packing. I yanked out my turquoise faux fur, an UWTacoma grad polar fleece blanket, my toothbrush and Jaguar's mesa. Locked the truck.

Wasn't quite the same as a Hotel Murano. The door lock, ummm, didn't exist. A rope somehow was supposed to secure our safety, but … um … I couldn't figure out how.

So, Jag and I slept toe to toe, all cozy with our big ass Home Depot flashlight, a sentimental salmon fish bat/wacker and my Blackberry between us â€" just in case we had an unwanted, frisky visitor in the night. (Thank you Charger for both weapons, XOXOXOoooxoxoox!).

This morning all the other freaks had left so we walked to the Mesa to do Jaguar Heart's Peruvian shaman morning tobacco ritual. She guided me as we cleared Hucha (negative energies), took in the breath of heaven and earth, and called in the energy of the directions in prayer. My hair flying in the desert sky, I felt downright Nisqually. (I love you, Billy Frank!)

Then we got naked and jumped in the hot springs.

Ode to life.
Ahhhh, Blessed Be.
This for now. That for later.
Kisses to you and almost to the Playa!

All my love, and wish you were here!
XoxoxotoxoxoPop

(As in the sound our aluminum trailer roof made as it croaked its way expanding and contracting into desert morning.)

LEGO at the Telephone Room

SUZY STUMP: CALLING THE BEST TOY IN THE WORLD >>>

LEGO LEGO, Danish for "Ahhh! Who the hell left this on the floor!" has a kickass gadget on its Web site. Go to LEGO.com and download the LEGO Digital Designer software, and with digital bricks, create whatever comes into your head: the Murray Morgan Bridge, Colin’s beard, your apartment (complete with empty PBR cans). It’s rocking cool.

If you would rather look at completed LEGO works of art, check out the LEGO Show opening tomorrow in the very tiny Telephone Room gallery. The gallery will kick off this Dan Creamer exhibit with an opening reception tomorrow from 5-9 p.m. Afterward, you’ll have to make an appointment to see the show, which ends Sept. 31.

The Telephone Room has been having fun with LEGOs on its blog. Check it here.

[The Telephone Room, Sept. 2-31, reception Sept. 2 5-9 p.m., 3710 N. Seventh St., Tacoma, by appointment at thetelephoneroom@gmail.com]
