Grand Impromptu scatter

SUZY STUMP: READY … BREAK! >>>

As you all know by reading the Weekly Volcano, the Grand Impromptu Cooperative Gallery shut down to make room for a fourth screen at The Grand Cinema. The Impromptu artists decided not to relocate, which eliminates the opportunity to all their talent in one location. Bummer.

Thankfully, the Grand Impromptu sent out a press release noting where its members are now showing. Here is the rundown:

Shirley Benton will have her abstract paintings at Artifact Signature Gallery for the month of October, 2009. She will be present for a “Meet the Artists” event Oct. 17 7 p.m. to midnight (21 and over) at the gallery (3218 Eastlake Ave., Seattle).

Dorothy McCuistion currently has a solo show in the gallery at the Tahoma Unitarian Universalist Church (1115 South 56th St., Tacoma) and three pieces in the Rabbitual show at the Two Vaults Gallery (602 S. Fawcett, Tacoma). Look for Dorothy during the Open Studio week-end for Art at Work Month at the studio of LeeAnn Seaburg Perry (4683 N. Lexington, Tacoma).

Printmaker and Sumi-e painter Bill Colby is freakin’ busy:

  • Tacoma Community College’s Northwest Annual, Sept. 1-30
  • Handforth Gallery, Tacoma Public Library, Sept. 8-Oct. 5
  • Northwest Craft Center, Seattle Center, Seattle, Oct, 9-Nov. 12
  • The Gallery at Tahoma Unitarian Universalist Church, Oct. 4-Nov. 11
  • Art At Work Month â€" Open studio on Nov. 7-8

Mirka Hokkanen, a newcomer to the Tacoma scene, will have a solo show of prints and drawings at the Friends Gallery at Lakewold Gardens in the month of November. Also check out her studio (2926 S. Steele St., Tacoma) during November’s Art At Work month.

Becky Frehse received a grant from the Tacoma Artists Initiative Project that will allow her time to make new work for a solo show to open in February, 2010 at The Sandpiper Gallery (2221 N. 30th St., Old Town Tacoma).

Another events room opens

JAKE DE PAUL: HAVE YOUR BANQUET IN STEILACOOM >>>

Jake's Remember the times you spent on Jake’s Bar & Bistro’s deck this summer pondering where to present your boring thesis on owl cancer? Sipping a beer too hard to pronounce, soaking in the sun and watching the Steilacoom ferry go back and forth on Jake’s deck â€" it took your mind off owl cancer for a few seconds.

However, reality hit, and you desperately needed a banquet space â€" and you needed it close to Steilacoom where many owl enthusiasts live.

Thankfully, the place you love dearly, Jake’s, just opened up a banquet room. It has a special name â€" Jake’s Celebration Room. Oh, and it’s nice, too. The freakin’ bar is made of exquisite handcrafted mahogany, maple and bamboo.

Here are the details:

Jake’s Celebration Room will accommodate up to 55 people for a sit down lunch or dinner and much more for cocktail parties.  With 15 specialty beers, an assortment of unique wines, a full service bar, and a 50-inch plasma television with state of the art sound system, Jake’s Celebration Room hopes to provide a space everyone will enjoy.  The final touches to the wine display and lighting controls will be complete on Friday morning, for the first event scheduled on Saturday.

So put your owl cancer presentation in order and give owner Jake Hathcock a buzz at 253.365.9981, or send him an e-mail.

Friday film openings

MICHAEL SWAN: ON THE BIG SCREENS TOMORROW >>>

The-Cove The Cove: an environmental documentary with the heart of a spy thriller.

THE COVE: A heartbreaking documentary, and a certain Oscar nominee, about the use of dolphins in captivity and the mislabeling of the flesh as whale meat.  Includes a central role by Richard O’Barry, who became rich and famous as the trainer of the five dolphins who portrayed Flipper on the TV series, and now feels remorse for his role in the exploitation of this intelligent, human-friendly mammal species.  He joins a dangerous operation to penetrate the defenses of a secret cove in Japan where dolphins are lured to their deaths.  A combination of ecological outrage and the tension of a thriller. Four stars â€" Roger Ebert

[The Grand Cinema, Friday, Sept. 4-Thursday, Sept. 10 2:20, 6:40 and 8:45 p.m., also Saturday-Monday 12:10 p.m., Rated PG-13, 606 Fawcett Ave., Tacoma, 253.593.4474]

Hood metal tonight

JOHN HERBERT: PARTNERS IN CRHYME AT HELL'S KITCHEN TONIGHT >>>

Partners-in-crhyme-300-9-3 It all started with some “ill rhymes and a hand-me-down keyboard” and evolved into a hardcore hip-hop act that sounds like maybe they incorporated an 808, a guitarist, and a better herbal jazz cigarette hookup. Partners in Crhyme has been around since 2001, sporting the names “Mr. Penetration” and “Johnny D’ Cron.”

From MySpace: “Mitch Hendrickson’s guitar work is like a concentrated dosage of pure adrenaline hitting the bloodstream after having your teeth kicked in by D’Cron and Penetration’s verbal curb stomping.”

About four years ago, George Clinton said in an interview that he wanted to see more hip-hop and metal hybrids, and was reportedly working with Tool to create what he called “hood-metal.”

Maybe this is what he envisioned. I don’t know. He was pretty high.

To this band, the record release show is as important as ever.
