Help save Club Impact

MICHAEL SWAN: THIS JUST IN >>>

Randi Stumpp, co-volunteer coordinator for downtown Tacoma's all-ages Club Impact, sent us a disconcerting e-mail:

As of September 30th, 2009 World Vision, our sponsor and holder of the lease to Brick City, will be pulling our funding/lease for all Brick City programs. We are not the only World Vision program affected, hundreds of programs all across the nation are being shut down due to lack of funding.

The goal of Club Impact for the past 11 years has been to build community by supporting musicians. We do this by providing a venue where local musicians can share their art with the community; it is a scenario in which everyone benefits: the musicians have a stage, the fans have a place to enjoy their art, and local youth have a safe alternative to clubs that serve alcohol. Through friendships made, lyrics and lives that are shared, new hope can be discovered. Our goal is accomplished by living our motto, "Give Respect, Get Respect".

We've already tentatively booked shows through November, but with getting the boot after our September 26th show, that leaves us scrambling and trying to find a rental hall to uphold our commitments.

Club Impact will hold a volunteer meeting next Monday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. Those interested in helping out Club Impact are encouraged to attend the meeting. If you can’t wait, drop by the club at 754 Pacific Ave. in downtown Tacoma and share your ideas with Stumpp, Sara Sanchez or Paul Stuthman. You can email the club here, contact them on MySpace or their Facebook fan page with your ideas to help save the club.

Club Impact's next show:

Keeping Secrets, I Am The Enemy, City In the Sea, Brittany Glabe & Ashleigh Love, Saturday, Sept. 12, 7 p.m., all ages, $7 at Brown Paper Tickets.

Leaping nudes on a trampoline

POP: TACOMA AT BURNING MAN >>>

Burn-Logo It’s full moon day â€" large as a potato chip in the sky. Ahhhh, romantic analogies.

It’s also Jaguar Hearts birthday here at Burning Man.

Four freely and exquisitely unclad bodies walk the Esplanade repeating, "I love every aspect of myself. I love every aspect of you," then upon invitation, all commence to leap nude on a trampoline in bliss, applauded in joy by passersby.

I see a yurt, walls of paper, gallons of bright tempera and paint brushes at its base, covered in vibrant images and spiritual to decadent thoughts of passersby. It’s a kiosk of love â€" one that would make Tacoma Art Place proud.

At Burning Man, chocolate covered pomegranates are like cigarettes in prison. Where are you Almond Roca?!

A 20-foot high, illuminated fish swims by swinging its tail lounging revelers inside. It reminds me of the Mad Hat Tea Company's back room, only it’s a giant fish with illuminated scales.

The cowboy at Acqabar imbues our water with peace, abundance. I ask the Giver to write what he'd like to gift to Burning Man on my skin so I would take it with me across the desert. He wrote "Freedom."

Seven nude bodies in 30 feet gauze celebrate as wind swells and careens the fabric into every crevice and muscle like the Barefoot Collective dancers I’ve seen back home in Tacoma â€" minus the nudity.

There’s a foreskin restoration class for men in a 30-foot tipi (how to reclaim birthright and regrow the skin). Maybe I’ll pay attention and bring the secret back to Tacoma. Maybe not.

Tacoma, you are with me at the Burn?

Last night in the medical tent, I meet a San Francisco-nine-stitches-bike-wreck man who grew up in Lakewood. He was surprised to learn how forward T-town has become with its sexy growth spurts like TAM, Robert Daniel Gallery, Fulcrum, the Mix, the Roberson, and the soon to be McMenamins.

By the way ladies, this morning it took me two hours to detangle my hair from layers of unintended dreads â€" the alkaline dust. Embellish, I need that deep conditioning when I return.

OK, I need to get back to Spreading the 253Love in the dust!

Burning Man is a vortex of synchronicity.

The Man is about to Burn

POP: TACOMA AT BURNING MAN >>>

The night is filled with pairings: mind, body and spirit. It is an unusual feeling of urgency, of passions erupting. I hear primal screams, outrageous costumes; see eruptions of flame from mutant cars and art installations, fire dancers, and bodies coupling.

We are in my van waiting out the massive dust storm. It's a black night but for the full moon completely hidden by desert dust clouds.

We are at 30 minutes to countdown where all people release their intentions to the fire. It is the closest to a primal, jungle experience that I've ever known, except for the fuchsia rave disco clothes, techno music and pyrotechnics. Burning Man pulls my primal from my core and invites me to show everyone with no fear.

I don't know how to put this into Tacoma terms today, this night. Its like living in a far away land, forever intimate with total strangers. Kisses of love given out freely from the heart. Gifts given simply because a kind word was spoken.

Love is in the air most of the time here.

Right now, at countdown, we are guttural, core, to the bone primal. It feels damn good.

Yyyeeeeooowww!

Bring your dad to Le Voyuer

REV. ADAM MCKINNEY: THE BIGFELLAS TONIGHT >>>

The-Big-Fellas-300-9-3 Can I go on record as saying that the new subgenre of “dad-rock” is both terribly offensive and, in many cases, eerily accurate? For fear of angry, Baby Boomer retaliation, I hesitate to categorize San Diego’s The Bigfellas as dad-rock. But what else is there? How do you describe a band so very un-hip, with its early ‘70s MOR affectations, but so goofily fun? There’s very little that’s edgy about this band, despite having songs called “420” and “I Wish I Were Gay.” But the songs are witty, and it’s easy to hear the band’s tongues planted firmly in their cheeks.

It’s not cool for a music columnist to say so, but, well, I’d rather hear dad-rock any day of the week than Animal Collective’s newest LP.
