Weekly Volcano Twitter Stalker

The Weekly Volcano follows the people you're too embarrassed to >>>

Just like most good, new-age, social media applications, Twitter allows people to share and be privy to once personal, almost wholly pointless information about peoples' lives. It's seemingly endless. While Twitter is mostly full of everyday, ho-hum people - just like you and me, sharing info about what type of oatmeal we ate for breakfast and where we get our hair cut - Twitter is also a magnet for the moderately-famous.

Stars of yesterday, illiterate millionaire athletes, former cast members of Saved By the Bell - you can follow them all, intimately, on Twitter.

But, you've got standards. We get that.

That's why we'll do it for you, in a feature we like to call Weekly Volcano Twitter Stalker.

This week, checking in with...

Larry King

March 2: Another awkward Larry King picture, and a birthday shout-out

"And it's Jon's birthday! Happy Birthday @BonJovi" via Web, 10:48 a.m.

February 24: Unsolved Larry King Show mysteries

"The parents of missing actor Andrew Koenig will be on tonight" via Web, 11:12 a.m.

"Still not sure what happened with the Koenigs. I talked to them in the break and told them they were on next. Then they left..." via Web, 7:07 p.m.

January 25: Larry King crosses the line. This is just disturbing.

"A slice of heaven!" via Web, 12:58 p.m.

Tune in tomorrow for more tweets from the life of Larry King (@kingsthings)

Hank Williams III coming to Hell's Kitchen

Son of Son of Hank is coming to Tacoma next month. Photo courtesy of MySpace

CONCERT ALERT >>>

If you don't wanna lose sight of country music as it gets gobbled up in NASCAR nouveau riche redneck culture, then you'd better check out country legacy Hank Williams III when Mike Thrasher Presents brings him to Hell's Kitchen Sunday, June 20. Williams plays country music so sweet and pure you'll wanna cry. He also plays a second set of punk (borderline metal) that'll really give you something to cry about.

If you're keeping a scorecard (and you should be if you're bringing the parental units), his current tour has Son of Son of Hank splitting the night between straight-up country and western (first set) and flat-out punk-metal (second).

Send ma and pa home early. Williams and his band Assjack mean it, man.

Tickets will go on sale Saturday, May 22 through TicketsWest.

Hank Williams III

With Izzy Cox
Sunday, June 20, 9 p.m., 21+, $20 advance, $23 doors
Hell's Kitchen, 928 Pacific Ave., Tacoma, 253.759.6003

The Skoog, Tacoma's original speakeasy?

INTERESTING TIP OF THE DAY >>>

When I arrived at work today there was an email waiting in my inbox from Deborah Bach, editor and co-founder of Three Sheets Northwest - an online boating magazine based out of Seattle.

Apparently, true to her job title, Bach recently boated to Tacoma to explore some of our city's "grit" - and dive bars.

To make a medium sized story short, Bach Googled "Tacoma Dive Bars" and came up with this - The Skoog.

According to The Skoog's Web site, it's "Tacoma's original speakeasy" or "blind pig."

Furthermore:

Evidence suggests it was established in 1916 when prohibition began and probably served local mill workers into the 1930's. After the repeal of prohibition in 1933, The Skoog closed its doors and was sealed off by the home owner at the request of Mayor M.G. Tennent. Little else is known of its history. ...

The Skoog was all but forgotten until 2007 when a plumber working on a major home remodel accidentally uncovered evidence of a hidden room below a bathroom. A wall in the basement was knocked down and a 15' x 40' room was revealed. The Skoog was rediscovered, untouched for over 70 years. Though covered in cobwebs and dust, the 14' bar was intact and some furniture and wall decor were still in place. ...

The Skoog's original bar is serving again and features a wide variety of spirits and beers. True to its origins, all beer is refrigerated in bottles and cans as there was no system for kegs in this underground bar. As The Skoog cannot legally sell or distribute alcohol, it maintains its blind pig status in its undisclosed location near Puget Gulch. If you can find The Skoog and you know the secret password, maybe you can experience Old Tacoma's original dive bar for yourself ...

Bach was emailing to ask me, and by default every other empoyee stationed at Weekly Volcano World Headquarters, if I'd ever heard of The Skoog. Sadly, I had not. Even more baffling, neither had anyone on the Volcano's staff of infamous alcoholics.

The Skoog - myth or reality? I'm not sure what to make of it, but it's an interesting thing to think about on a day when you're stuck inside your cubicle. Do you know the location, and secret password of The Skoog? Maybe you do. ...

Tacoma represent at Cannes Film Festival

EMILY GOES TO FRANCE >>>

Last Friday Emily Alm handed out beers during the 72 Hour Film Festival.  Today, she's at the Cannes International Film Festival - no doubt on the other side of the beer counter.

Alm, director of communications at The Grand Cinema, is in Cannes, France, with a laminated badge and a list of films to see. Lucky for us, she'll be blogging her experiences. Here's what she sent our way before she left:

As most of you know, I will be venturing to Cannes, France in the very near future! I'm lucky enough to be "accredited" (very fancy, right?) so I will be able to attend films during the Cannes Film Festival, and have access to some of the festival areas where film professionals will be hanging out and doing business. It should be exciting, but also a little nerve-wracking! I am very much looking forward to everything the trip will bring me, it is truly my dream trip. I'm scheduled to depart on Monday afternoon (the 17th) - and let's hope that darn ash cloud gets as far away from Europe and my flight path as possible! - and will return home on Sunday, May 23rd. The festival area has some Internet stations, and there are a couple Internet cafes near where I'll be staying, so I do plan on writing updates (hopefully some exciting celeb sightings, in addition to stories about my experience in general) frequently while I'm there.

You can follow Alm's red carpet coverage in two spots:

Marcy Playground is coming (back) to Olympia

NOSTALGIA ALERT >>>

Does it smell like sex and candy, or is that just me?

I'd heard rumblings for a couple weeks, but today I actually decided to dig around a little - and turns out it's true. Marcy Playground, yes this Marcy Playground, will be playing The Royal Lounge in Olympia on June 11, which just happens to be the night before the band is scheduled to play the Napavine Amphitheater.

While Oly's tight music community has likely known of this show for a while - as I heard about it myself a couple weeks ago from a source down south - I had yet to hear the show mentioned in Tacoma, so I thought I'd pass it along.

A Marcy Playground at The Royal show makes sense for a number of reasons, not the least of which being frontman John Wozniak's Evergreen State College connection. In fact, Marcy Playground's 1997 self-titled effort is full of references to that neck of the woods, most obviously "One More Suicide" - perhaps one of the few times in major music history Chehalis has been name dropped.

I'll admit it. I was a Marcy Playground fan. This news, while dating, is pretty exciting to me.

While I don't have ticket info yet, you can bet I'll pass it along as soon as I do - or you can check The Royal's MySpace or Facebook page. There's no mention of the show either place yet, but from what I heard promotion just started this week.

5 Things To Do: Funky Cat Hat Party, Chalk Off, Flamenco ...

There's a Funky Cat Hat Party tonight inside the Speakeasy Arts Cooperative.

FRIDAY, MAY 14, 2010 >>>

1. The Vinyl Tribe DJs hosts a "Funky Cat Hat Party" featuring dubstep and house music beginning at 10 p.m. inside the Speakeasy Arts Cooperative.

2. Local artists and chalkheads will gather in Frost Park and Ninth and Commerce in downtown Tacoma at noon and draw works of art with chalk for an hour. As always, chalk will be available for free.

3. King's Books hosts another Distinguished Writer Series featuring poet Tony Barnstone at 7 p.m. followed by an open mic.

4. Israel Horovitz's Six Hotels, currently making its West Coast premiere at Harlequin Productions in Olympia at 8 p.m., is a disparate collection of one-act plays.  If this anthology has any single uniting theme, it's the exposure of clandestine desires, motivations and major malfunctions. Read a full review here.

5. Flamenco song and dance is - pretty much - sexier than you'll ever be (even if you grow your hair out like Antonio Banderas). It's a bummer. Luckily, like an un-sexy sponge, you can sop up the sexy sweat Flamenco exudes and use it to your advantage. Flamenco Arte Y Paz will hit The Vault in Olympia at 8 p.m.

MORNING SPEW: Heinz ketchup change, Beck's "Record Club" ...

WHAT WE HAVE FOUND TODAY >>>

Ian McKellen is mistaken for a wizard.

Apparently, Heinz ketchup is about to change its recipe

The really bad oil spill may actually be really (infinite) bad.

In a poll of 1,600 Russians, more than half think bribing officials is the best way to "solve problems."

Devil Inside: Beck's new Record Club cover album is out.

NIGHT MOVES: Nashville Pussy, The I's, Rare Groove Friday

GIT-R-DONE: Nashville Pussy has a lot in common with Tacoma - in facial hair alone.

LIVE MUSIC AND DJS TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

Sleaze Rock: Nashvile Pussy is a band built on only a handful of elements, the most predominant ones being whiskey, sweat, sex and fire. The band, by design, is your oily, stoned, horny, high school brother's favorite rock band. Believe it or not, it's a brilliant premise. Read the full story here. Parental Advisory Tour with Green Jelly and Psychostick, Friday, May 14, 9 p.m., $15-$20, Hell's Kitchen, 928 Pacific Ave., Tacoma, 253.759.6003 - Matt Driscoll

Glam Garage Folk Rock: The I's are Portland glam-garage by way of Austin punk, and when they land in Olympia they'll be playing bluesy folk-rock, informed though it may be by a good chunk of musical history. Read the full story here. With Haukness and Flesh Lawn, Friday, May 14, 10 p.m., no cover, Le Voyeur, 404 Fourth Ave. E., Olympia, 360.943.5710 - Rev. Adam McKinney

DJs: Back in the day, Brits loved obscure American soul records almost as much as they loved mayonnaise and cucumber sandwiches. DJs Bobby Galaxy and dAb celebrate this phenomenon by playing authentic, obscure soul, funk and jazz records tonight. It's the kind of music that would have been heard at all-night parties in Manchester or Blackpool back in the day. Bring your own skinny tie. Friday, May 14, 9:30 p.m., no cover, Tempest Lounge, 913 Martin Luther King Junior Way, Tacoma, 253.272.4904 - Michael Swan
