5 Things To Do: Tacoma Treasures, Peabody Waldorf party, Benjamin Cobb, Excellent Gentlemen ...

Hopefully you can pick up a Pogo Ball today at the Tacoma Treasures sale.

SATURDAY, JULY 10, 2010 >>>

1. The Evergreen State College's Tacoma campus the annual Tacoma Treasures event goes down from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering an impressive collection of gently used toys, household items, clothing and more for cheap purchase and allowing you the opportunity to support Evergreen Tacoma and its student scholarship fund. It's a win-win, especially if you score something cool like a partially deflated Pogo ball.

2. From annoying ailments, such as headaches and sinusitis, to the major killers, heart disease and cancer - nature's oldest medicine not only cures, but often prevents such sufferings. And what is that medicine? Food. Kathryn Parslow's book Surviving the American High-Tech Diet offers scientifically proven answers to America's health crisis. She'll sign her book from 1-3 p.m. at the Commencement Bay Coffee Co. in Tacoma.

3. An art house for the young, the lowbrow, even the highbrow, and the in between - artists and patrons. Hasn't Tacoma tried this before? Indeed, it has, and although most previous efforts are now gone, they still hold an important place in Tacoma's collective artistic history. That's exactly why the Peabody Waldorf Gallery on Broadway deserves your company and support today from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. Billed as the Peabody Preservation Party, nonstop music, art, break dancing, baking, raffle, and auction action will all help raise money to keep the Peabody moving forward.

4. Most glass artists the Weekly Volcano runs with make pipes. So is not the case with Benjamin Cobb, who opens what should be a captivating show today at the Traver Gallery in Tacoma. Letting the study of the human body inspire his work and creating sleek and sexy gaze-stealers, Cobb is a very modern glass artist with enough skill that it makes us kind of regret opening this off with a pipe joke - which is saying something. Drop by for an artist reception from 4-7 p.m. The show runs through Aug. 8.

5. The Excellent Gentlemen will fill Doyle's Public House with R&B, synthesizers, talk-boxes, keyed bass, booty-funk, and harmonies beginning at 9:30 p.m.

Out in the Park photos

Out in the Park pride festival was held in Wright Park today.

WE GOT OUT >>>

This week's heat wave might be getting you hot, but things got steamier when Tacoma Pride 2010 hit Wright Park today in the annual Out in the Park festival. You know the drill - dancing, singing and grinding mixed with advocacy and political groups, friendly politicians and jumbo hot dog vendors. Beside the politicians, vendor tents and advocate speeches, the festival offered a lot of things to the city's LGBT population: a coming-out experience, a chance to be out in public with more ease, or to get more involved. For others, it's just a hell of a party.

We snapped a few photos today.

Out in the Park camps out in Wright Park until 7 p.m. tonight then disperses to the neighboring gay-friendly bars until the wee hours.

Old Town Blues Festival in pictures

The New Blues Brothers closed the Tacoma Old Town Music Festival in the Slavonian Hall.

GOOD TIMES >>>

Held every year in mid July, The Tacoma Old Town Music Festival - formerly the Old Town Blues Festival - crams around 20 blues-ish bands into a full day of wall-to-wall music. It kicked off yesterday morning with BluesBerry pancake breakfast featuring music by Mark DuFresne with Annieville Blues, featured surprise sets from Al Earick, Billy Stoops, Mark Riley, and Billy Farmer in the afternoon, and ended with interesting dance moves in front of the New Blues Brothers Band inside the Slavonian Hall.

If you didn't get a chance to drop dollars into the pink boots - money earmarked for the benefiting Breast Cancer Resource Center - please do so right here. Yes, organizers Ted Brown and Mike Mitchell strive hard to present a kickass blues show, but they'd give it all up if it meant they could generate more money in a different fashion for the Breast Cancer Resource Center, an organization they truly believe in.

Weekly Volcano Twitter Stalker

The Weekly Volcano follows B & C-list celebrities so you don't have to >>>

Just like most good, new-age, social media applications, Twitter allows people to share and be privy to once personal, almost wholly pointless information about peoples' lives. It's seemingly endless. While Twitter is mostly full of everyday, ho-hum people - just like you and me, sharing info about what type of oatmeal we ate for breakfast and where we get our hair cut - Twitter is also a magnet for the moderately-famous.

Stars of yesterday, illiterate millionaire athletes, former cast members of Saved By the Bell - you can follow them all, intimately, on Twitter.

But, you've got standards. We get that.

That's why we'll do it for you, in a feature we like to call Weekly Volcano Twitter Stalker.

Today, checking in with...

Art on the Ave in pictures

This random dude rocked his shoes off at Art on the Ave Sunday.

WE GOT SUNBURNED >>>

Yesterday one of the busiest streets in Tacoma was Sixth Avenue - between Pine and Trafton - where from early afternoon to about 5:30 p.m., food vendors, artists, bands and herds of neighborhood people held court at the 12th annual Art on the Ave festival.

Though body paint and roving packs of teenagers often lead to a damn good time, the Weekly Volcano has a strict "no drum circle" policy - so we stayed clear of the Family/Kids Stage. Not surprisingly, our day was spent soaking up the sunshine in the beer gardens at SAX, O'Malley's Irish Pub and Jazzbones - listing to the bands on the neighboring stages and taking in more distortion and delay than any effects-pedal has to offer. Unfortunately, we just missed Vicci Martinez at the Jazzbones' stage, but Ryan Purcell and the Last Round at O'Malley's and Champagne Sunday at Jazzbones were both  worthy. A high point had to be when the guitarist for Common Ground climbed off the SAX stage while continuing to perform, wandered across the street to his family on the grass, and totally rocked them.

Also, for whatever reason, kids had it in for Mitch Robinson, marketing and business operations mamanger at Click! Cable TV. One after another, kids stepped up to the dunk tank throwing line and hit the bullseye, dropping Robinson repeatedly. Maybe it's time for a Click! marketing survey aimed at Tacoma's youngsters.

The rest of our day was spent doing a number of things at Art on the Ave, including watching Tacoma's Most Sexy server Chelsea O'Sullivan paint a mural, rocking to a random guitarist next to the new Caffe Dei, creeping out the beautiful Kaimiola Polynesian dancers, throwing our hips out working the free hula hoops, and paying the price for not applying sunscreen.

Beertropolis coming to Sixth Avenue

NEW BEER STORE TO RIVAL TACOMA BOYS AND 99 BOTTLES >>>

Rumors around the South Sound that a new destination retailer of beer are true. The brains behind Jònz Catering are set to open Beertopolis Beertropolis along Tacoma's bar strip of Sixth Avenue later this summer. The location decision is down to two spots.

"We are moving right along. We were a little optimistic with our timing," Jonz Catering owner Linda Dagley says, noting that news on lease negotiations and beer selection will be coming in the next few weeks for the shop that is set to open in August.

Plans call for a retail-only beer spot that offers some 1,000 labels from largely small brewers from around the world with a special nod to beers of the Northwest. The shop will also offer tastings, pairings and club memberships that will bring discounts and invites to special events once the shop opens its doors.

"We want to educate Tacoma about how to drink beer," Dagley said. "No Bud Lite or Coors Lite. I think there is a need for it in Tacoma. We will offer a lot of things that a grocery store can't."

The projected stock of micro beer labels will make Beertropolis the largest destination of beer in the South Sound, topping Tacoma Boys' 500 labels and rivaling the shelves of Federal Way's 99 Bottles.

All of this is good news for beer chuggers, Tacoma Boys beer manager Donna Herren says.

"I welcome the competition," she says. "It will definitely mean everyone will have to step up and play their A game."

While Tacoma Boys and other beer sellers will also offer tastings thanks to a recent change in liquor laws, an addition of another mega-beer retailer will mean more events, tighter competition for hard-to-get labels and better promotions, Herren says, noting that she doesn't fear the new shop will cut into her customer base and might even add to it.

"There is plenty of beer business out there," Herren says. "There are a lot of people in Tacoma drinking a fuckload of beer."

The addition of another venue to learn about beer will mean a wider stock of people who will move from grocery store shelves of mega beer labels to more specialty bottles, she said. A new shop, however, won't likely mean price wars between stores since the state's new beer tax and generally high prices from breweries will keep prices competitive and focus customer fights in stocks of specialty labels.
