Be our nightlife writer

INVITATION TO FREELANCE WRITERS >>>

The Weekly Volcano is currently looking for freelance writers to cover the dating and nightlife scenes of the South Sound, for a new section soon to debut in the paper. Ideal candidates will posses exceptional writing skills, be extremely observant and posses the ability to transfer those observations successfully to paper, and be familiar with the nightlife/dance/DJ scene in the South Sound - from Federal Way to Tacoma to Gig Harbor to Olympia. Candidates will need to be able to regularly visit the clubs and singles' nightspots in the area, and capture the essence of these nights and events for our readers. The position is freelance, and it pays a per word rate plus expense reimbursement. Ideal candidates will also not mind writing for a section of the paper to be called "Meat Market," which along with useful information for those in the single scene, will regularly feature butcher profiles and steamy steak pics.

Finally, ideal candidates will immediately realize that all this "ideal candidate" corporate-speak makes us super-uncomfortable. Sorry about that. We were really drunk when we wrote it.

Send resumes, cover letters, and at least three writing samples to Weekly Volcano editor Matt Driscoll at editor@weeklyvolcano.com

Pierce Transit Board votes for Preservation Plan

THIS JUST IN >>>

This just in from Pierce Transit:

Lakewood, WA - The Pierce Transit Board of Commissioners on Monday evening selected a plan to preserve service levels with the goal of providing financially sustainable public transportation that area residents value and use.  The Board directed staff to put forward a ballot proposition for the February 8, 2011 election to exercise the final 0.3% sales tax authority available to Pierce Transit to provide funding to meet current service demands.

Over the last year, Pierce Transit has carefully developed and refined service plans centered on three rounds of extensive public input.  The final alternatives were based on two funding levels; one that reduces service while utilizing the current sales tax level of 0.6% (6 cents on a $10 purchase), and one that preserves service by exercising the remaining sales tax authority of 0.3% (an additional 3 cents on a $10 purchase).

Since the beginning of the recession, Pierce Transit has been actively addressing the impacts of sharp declines in sales tax revenue.  The agency was one of the first entities to experience a layoff of personnel -a five percent reduction.  Pierce Transit delayed or eliminated capital projects, reduced service by nearly six percent, and increased regular adult fares by 25 cents.   Those actions combined with employee identified operational efficiencies have saved over $72 million.

The Pierce Transit Board also directed staff to continue to look for ways to cut more costs without impacting service until the voters have their say in February of 2011.

Updated maps and information for the adopted plan will be posted on www.pttomorrow.org on Friday, July 16.

How to save Tacoma's Freedom Fair

HE ACTUALLY WROTE "FREEDOMPALOOZA" >>>

Bill Kaufman, CEO of Kaufman Kreative E-Commerce & Marketing, and board member of the Tacoma Events Commission - the organization that produces Tacoma's annual Fourth of July bonanza Freedom Fair - wrote an editorial in today's News Tribune listing 10 ways to save Freedom Fair. Last week, Doug Miller, executive director of Tacoma Events Commission, said Tacoma Freedom Fair is a million dollar event that is run on about a $250,000 cash budget.

Of the 10 ideas listed, one of Kaufman's ideas is to charge admission:

Ten times more admission revenue next year. I watched the admission gates for a couple hours and was amazed by how many people walked around them to avoid being asked to donate. There was barely one donation for every 100 people.

We could increase admission revenue 10 times by simply requiring an entry fee for everyone, and reducing admission to just $1. Everyone can afford that, and if they want to donate more, great. (For those who didn't donate, you can still do it online at www.FreedomFair.com.)

Another one of his ideas is a FreedomPalooza:

Ten really good music groups of all different types, all donating their performances.

A floating music stage with on-shore bleachers and a $10 admission fee could easily sell out and help generate much-needed revenue. Maybe call it the "FreedomPalooza"?

Of all his ideas, the admission charge seems the most likely to save the huge Fourth of July celebration. What do you think?

Weekly Volcano Twitter Stalker

The Weekly Volcano follows B & C-list celebrities so you don't have to >>>

Just like most good, new-age, social media applications, Twitter allows people to share and be privy to once personal, almost wholly pointless information about peoples' lives. It's seemingly endless. While Twitter is mostly full of everyday, ho-hum people - just like you and me, sharing info about what type of oatmeal we ate for breakfast and where we get our hair cut - Twitter is also a magnet for the moderately-famous.

Stars of yesterday, illiterate millionaire athletes, former cast members of Saved By the Bell - you can follow them all, intimately, on Twitter.

But, you've got standards. We get that.

That's why we'll do it for you, in a feature we like to call Weekly Volcano Twitter Stalker.

Today, checking in with...

Britney Spears!

June 3: Britney Spears still has it (an ability to memorize lines and a fake smile, that is)

March 11: Britney Spears has poor taste in more than just music

"I saw Alice in Wonderland. It was soooo good!!! -Britney" 6:20 p.m., via web

January 19: And by "hot," Britney Spears means "make me look kinda dumb and stuff."

" Can't wait for you guys to check out my new Candies photos! They're hot!- Brit" 2:28 p.m., via web

December 5, 2009: Frozen yogurt excites Britney Spears

"My daddy got me a Blizz Berry machine for my birthday. Best frozen yogurt I've tried and now I can have it all the time! -Brit" 3:32 p.m., via Twitter for the iPhone

Tune in tomorrow for more hot Twitter Stalking action from the Weekly Volcano.

Wild blueberries without torn jeans

NO MORE JUMPING OVER THE FENCE >>>

As I wolfed down fresh wild blueberries Saturday, I couldn't recall the last time I ate any fruit quite so flavorful. Eating a blueberry still warm from the sun was like tasting one for the very first time. Its essence goes straight to your head. And everyone knows blueberries are loaded with antioxidant compounds that travel through the body reducing free radicals that can lead to cancer and other age-related diseases.

I was excited to hear the Washington Blueberry Commission has launched www.superblues.net - a consumer guide to fresh blueberries from farm fruit stands, U-Pick farms and provide growers choice recipes.

I no longer have to jump a certain fence to gather wild blueberries. Although, the price was right.

Pour some Sugar Sugar Sugar on me

Sugar Sugar Sugar

FUTURE THINGS ARE COMING >>>

Some performers, like Jarvis Cocker or Prince, are able to make their music purely, simply, uncomfortably about sex without it being embarrassing or seeming insincere. Their songs are chicken fights, bold stare-downs, at the end of which we always blink. There's always going to be something pretty thrilling about a singer doing away with juvenile innuendo and going straight for the jugular.

Sugar Sugar Sugar absolutely oozes sex. Their music is guttural, sometimes kind of violent, and very dirty.

Ranging from sleazy, harmonica-driven punk-blues to something that wouldn't sound out of place on an early Kinks album, Sugar Sugar Sugar come across as something pretty unique in these parts: a band that sounds just as at home playing in a dive as it would on a festival mainstage.

Checking in with Eddie Spaghetti

Eddie Spaghetti

CATCH HIM AT HELL'S KITCHEN FRIDAY >>>

Lemmy of Motorhead once mumbled, "If you don't like the Supersuckers, you don't like rock and roll." It's safe to say the same applies to Eddie Spaghetti, who, when not leading the Seattle-based rockers, unleashes solo material in dimly lit clubs - like our own Hell's Kitchen this Friday.

Today in his email newsletter, Spaghetti announced he's officially a signed artist again.

"I have taken my pen to paper and made a deal with the devil and it is my pleasure to announce that I, Eddie Spaghetti, have signed on to do a few records with the incredible label that is Bloodshot Records," he wrote in the newsletter. "While the band continues their break throughout the summer, I will be recording my third solo record. In fact I will be in there in about a week."

He goes on to write that rumors of a Supersuckers break-up are false.
