5 Things To Do Today: Justin Hillgrove comes alive, Dancing with the Tacoma Stars, Gruv Lounge DJ reunion ...

Check out Michael Kaniecki's India ink drawing "Semi-automatic" at 1114 Pacific Ave. in downtown Tacoma during the Art at Work Tacoma Studio Tours today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

SATURDAY, NOV. 6, 2010 >>>

1. Justin Hillgrove's Tim-Burton-meets-Edward-Gorey sense of fantasy can be seen at his solo show Black and White And Read All Over at the Mineral gallery. His love of literature, pop music and cinema pop up through a phantasmagorical cast of characters. If you haven't seen the show, today would be the day as Hillgrove will paint live with his buddy Mike Capp from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. inside Mineral.

2. Experience how everyday works of art played an important part of the life of mid-1800's. Fort Nisqually re-enactors and artisans demonstrate spinning, silversmithing, blacksmithing, woodworking, open-fire cooking and Native American basketweaving from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Experience what life was like in the 1800s (hint: they, too, couldn't stand the goddamn rain).

3. The second annual fundraising extravaganza that is Dancing with the Tacoma Stars is obviously a riff on not one but two popular TV shows. But who cares about originality when you can see Marilyn Strickland attempt the foxtrot? Raising money for Tacoma Musical Playhouse, tonight's Dancing with the Tacoma Stars at 5:30 p.m. inside the Temple Theater (akin to both "So You Think You Can Dance" and "Dancing with the Stars," with local celebs learning the ropes from Studio 6 Ballroom) will be a production you don't even have to bus the seniors in for. It'll be entertaining as hell.

4. Tacoma's theater company Gold from Straw opens the comedy Almost, Maine by John Cariani at 8 p.m. inside the Theatre on the Square.

5. The newly-built Gruv Lounge and Nightclub at Sixth and Proctor is expertly decorated: a chic bar, colorful-yet-unobtrusive lighting, a high-ceilinged dance floor adjacent to private karaoke rooms with comfortable seating. Gruv manager Calvin Murphy, who launched his DJ conglomerate Ocean Grooves in the same space in 1999 when it was the 6th & Proctor Bar & Grill, will reunite three DJs who spun in the same building 11 years ago - Donald Glaude, Omar and dAb - beginning at 9 p.m.

Le Voyeur Olympia - Downtown. Elbow Coulee, Pocket Panda, Razors and Red Flags. 10 pm, NC.

  • The music of Elbow Coulee is inarguably influenced by the kind of power pop that ran so rampant in the mid- to late-1990s, but it is delivered in a deceptively prickly package. In every song there is a huge chorus, delivered in that particularly bratty, California punk style by lead singer Andrew Tuller. Keeping the songs from dissolving into mainstream radio pap are jagged edges that hug every power chord and triumphant tempo change. It's an effective way of transporting those classic pop sounds into the murkier territory of today's music. There's a kind of restless ambition at work in many of the songs, resulting in delightfully unexpected turns, like the piano that comes twinkling along in "Strangers for Now" to accompany Elbow Coulee's surprisingly sweet harmonies. - Rev. Adam McKinney

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. Sonic Shakedown Garage Rock Fest, featuring The Plastards, The I Love Myselfs, The Coloffs, The Dignitaries, Apache Chief. Proceeds benefit the American Diabetes Association. 21+. 7 pm. $5.

  • Over the years, garage rock has become a staple in the Tacoma music scene, which is partially the result of having a lineage that dates back to the Sonics, those almighty, amp-stabbing garage grandfathers. Talking about "Tacoma grit," the music that pops into one's head is the likely the  dirty, ear-splitting kind that will be on display at Sonic Shakedown. Assembled by local garage rock act the Dignitaries, the bill is made up of almost half a dozen local mainstays, including the Coloffs, the Plastards, the I Love Myselfs, Apache Chief and the Dignitaries themselves. The lineup is eclectic within the boundaries of garage rock, showcasing the punkier and poppier extremes of the genre: the I Love Myselfs' more classic rock leanings will play in opposition to Apache Chief's rabid squall, for instance. Sweetening the deal even further are Sonic Shakedown's admirable intentions. Proceeds of the event will go to the America Diabetes Association. - Rev. AM

The Tacoma Cult Movie Club will spend this Sunday night a little different than most folks.

SUNDAY, NOV. 7, 2010 >>>

1. The Tacoma Cult Movie Club presents a night of giallo films, the Italian horror/mystery genre, beginning at 7 p.m. inside the Acme Grub Cage in Tacoma. Be prepared for black-gloved killers, homicidal maniacs fueled by adolescent sexual traumas and key information just out of reach of a character's conscious memory - as well as trailers, shorts serials and raffles.

2. Art at Work Tacoma: The Proctor Art Walk brings together a whole bunch of artists and a whole bunch of Proctor businesses, all within a three-block area from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Work by the award-winning artists of the Juried Proctor Art Show will be front and center today.

3. Step back in time for a special tea in honor of the suffrage centennial with the American Association of University Women of Washington from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. inside the historic Lord Mansion, the home of the State Capital Museum, just 7 blocks south of the Capitol campus in Olympia. The tea is free and open to the public and includes traditional tea refreshments.

4. Art at Work Tacoma: The artists behind the Spaceworks Tacoma installation, Wait, where am i?, which is part of the Woolworth Windows show at South 11th and Broadway, will be hanging out from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to answer questions about how collections play a part in our culture as well as our daily lives.

5. Pierce County citizens will hug it out in the Stadium High School bowl at 1:30 p.m. for "Pierce County Sings," a mass singing of John Legends "If You're Out There" film for a music video – sponsored by the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation's Be the Spark prgoram.

Night Moves: Nashville Pussy, New American Shame, Huntbird ...

The Petting Zu plays Jazzbones tonight.

THESE LIVE MUSIC SHOWS LOOK WORTHY >>>

Dawson's Bar and Grill Tacoma - South. Blues Jam, hosted by Tim Hall. 21+. 8 pm.

Hell's Kitchen Tacoma - Downtown. Nashville Pussy, New American Shame, Civet, Fall From Grace. 21+. 8 pm. $8-$10.

  • New American Shame drummer Geoff Reading has the scoop on the show here.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Shade Of Memories, Degree Of Disorder, VX36, The Petting Zu. 21+. 8 pm.

Northern Olympia - Downtown. Hurtbird, Mosley Watta. All Ages. 8 pm.

  • Hurtbird nimbly avoids classification. In form, perhaps they most closely resemble hip-hop but, similar to Revengers, they eschew classic hip-hop instrumentation in favor of rock ‘n' roll. That's where the similarities end, though, as Hurtbird brings a mellower, more experimental edge to the table. Accompanied largely by spoken word samples and led by a vocalist who has a more conversational, less confrontational style of emceeing, Hurtbird frequently falls into a meditative, though still quite danceable, groove. In the case of a song like "I Like My Bike," they even proudly flash their Portland roots by championing the very un-hip-hop subject of city transit. It's fun, not knowing what a band will do next - an inscrutability that Hurtbird seems to have mastered. - Rev. Adam McKinney

The Spar Tacoma - Old Town. Love Child. 21+. 7 pm. NC.

Stonegate Pizza Tacoma - South. Lonnie Mardis & His Quintet. 21+. 8 pm.

Uncle Sam's American Bar & Grill Spanaway. Blues Jam, hosted by Shelly Ely. 21+. 7 pm. NC.

Burger pockets of goodness

EL COMFY >>>

When the rain pours in the late afternoon, both during the week and on weekends, Tacoma's slice of Argentina - Asado - is overcome by the people equivalent seeking the warmth and comfort of the Sixth Avenue restaurant's lounge. They elbow their way through the door, jostling for space among the high-top tables and ogle the specials board while being bathed in warm colors and sultry, Latin tunes. There are always one or two appetizer specials written on the board. And until this coming Tuesday when the special disappears, Asado Burger Empanadas($9)are the king of comfort.

Essentially, the dish is Asado's famous burger miniaturized in the same fashion Mike Teavee shrank in the Wonka flick and stuffed into an empanada pastry - the combination of which is the food equivalent to falling in love for the first time.

Riding shotgun are Chimi and Poblano aioli sauces - both worthy of a dip, and pico di gallo.

Did you know it's supposed to rain this afternoon? Just saying.

Also of note is Asado's fifth anniversary celebration this coming Thursday at 10 p.m. They're bring in a DJ, pouring drink specials and selling $5 skewers.

In Their Words: Pierce County Sings recap

A scene from Sunday's Pierce County Sings at Stadium High bowl/photography by Ana Maria Sierra

SPENDING A SUNDAY IN THE STADIUM BOWL WITH EVERYONE >>>

Editor's note: Chiara Wood, co-owner of The Turning Point Integrated Therapies on Tacoma's Sixth Aevnue, and an activist with Catherine's Place, Women in Black, and about 50 other organizations and charities attended the Pierce County Sings event Sunday in the Stadium High School bowl. What follows is her thoughts on the event.

What a great, sunny-with-a-chance-of-rain, Northwest day to gather for Pierce County Sings - an event sponsored by The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation as part of the organization's efforts to bring greater awareness to issues of community, hope and nonviolence.

Pierce County residents, students wearing school colors, families, anyone who wanted to be a part of "History In The Making" were invited to participate.  We'd be singing John Legend's "If You're Out There," and making a professional music video to be premiered at "Be the Spark" when Archbishop Desmond Tutu comes to visit Tacoma as a keynote speaker, May 13, 2011 at the Tacoma Dome. GTCF's Be the Spark - a movement focused on mutual respect, nonviolence and hope - contains four different strategies built on the "4 truths": 1) Create a Youth Against Violence Endowment Fund directed by area youth who've been impacted by violence; 2) Continue and expand High School Dialogues on youth violence; 3) Engage the community through Pierce County Sings; 4) Engage and inspire community to action through Archbishop Tutu's visit.

The video crew and equipment were set up and ready to go as folks trickled into Stadium Bowl, guided to sit on the damp concrete bleachers with the towering brick school above and behind for scenic drama.

Staging and first "takes" of the song were going on as people arrived.  The sky darkened and the "Hey, that was great ... now let's just do it again" easiness of the director became a more urgent "Let's get this done."  The cloud burst across the bay was sloshing its way to the bowl.

Rose Lincoln Hamilton, executive director of TGTCF, stressed that the reason for the video was a call to action for each of us to play a role in making our community better.

Chaira Wood

I showed up at Stadium Bowl because I thought it sounded like fun.  It was fun - like being an extra in a scene of a movie, outside in the cold and damp, doing the same thing over and over with no idea what the whole picture will look like.  I showed up because I am an activist in love with the 253.  I showed up to sing the song, which I did on the way to the Bowl and the way home. I like the forward thinking and heart-centered personal responsibility for changing the world that John Legend's song promotes.

Pierce County lending its intentions and focus in a positive direction ... is all good.

Podcast: Cup Check sports column

Matt Driscoll's Cup Check sports column runs every week in the Weekly Volcano's Classifieds and on our website in the Extreme Leisure section.

CHECK IT >>>

On the first Sunday of every month I visit the Northwest Convergence Zone - a South Sound based podcast orchestrated by the venerable Darrell Fortune. It's "kind of a big deal," for lack of a better description, as the pro bono, weekend warriors behind the Northwest Convergence Zone recently came in fifth in King 5's Best of Western Washington poll - in the radio personality category. Usually, the Convergence Zone talks local music, arts and happenings - but once a month Darrel and Co. make an exception, allowing me to come in, talk sports and hype the new Cup Check column - a weekly irreverant look at the wild world of sports that recently debuted in the Volcano.

Here's a taste of yesterday's conversation, which you can also hear in full as part of this week's episode of the Northwest Convergence Zone.

A stitch in time, saves 75

Margaret Bergman inspired a bunch of weavers to band together in 1935 and take Tacoma by storm. Seventy-five years later, consider Tacoma taken. on. Photography by J.R. Eyerman/courtesy of the Tacoma Weavers' Guild

TACOMA WEAVERS' GUILD HAS BEEN SWAPING YARN FOR A LONG TIME >>>

We here in Spew have a humble mission. We only want to be your conscience; we only want to influence everything you do. To entertain yourself, that is. Now, we have been talking among ourselves, and we have reached a decision about what to do Friday. In the past, we listed events centered on weaving. We watched you that whole week, and you didn't go. Shame on you. The bad karma builds.

Here's your second chance yarn for brains.

The Tacoma Weavers' Guild celebrates its 75 anniversary with a huge textile show opening Friday, Nov. 12 inside Handforth Gallery and historical displays in the Northwest Room - both at the Tacoma Public Library Main Branch. We can tell their Art of Weaving show a big deal because the Guild has mailed us a big media kit with historical documents, their vast accomplishments and weaving art on a CD. From the material, we learned Swedish immigrant/weaver Margaret Bergman inspired 22 women to meet Dec. 7, 1935 inside the Fischer Store in downtown Tacoma. Apparently, the Guild is also the longest running organization of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. Take that Yelm Yarn & Barn Guild!

An opening reception for the Art of Weaving will be held for the shows 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, during Third Thursday ArtWalk.

The Guild will also host an all ages public workshop 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20.

What originated around campfires hundreds and thousands of years ago - way before Bergman busted out the loom in the South Sound - lives on as an important art form. And the Tacoma Weavers' Guild's show isn't just for weavers. It's really for anyone that loves fiber. And we're not talking about Wheaties, folks.
