CUP CHECK: Kobe Bryant and his homophobic slurs, plus other dumb jocks

WILD WORLD OF SPORTS >>>

After taking a short, one-week hiatus so the Volcano's Brett Cihon could whore the Tacoma Rainiers coverage we have planned this year, Cup Check is back ... better than ever!

Actually, that's not true. Not much has changed since the last Cup Check column. Sure, the woman at the wrong end of Brett Favre's penis-texting infatuation, Jenn Sterger, did an interview with ABC, but that's no game changer. That's just George Stephanopoulos viciously being forced to confront the fact he's got exactly zero body parts worth sexting anyone.

FILM: 2nd Annual Environmental Film Festival

"Carbon Nation" is an optimistic, solutions-based, non-partisan documentary that illustrates why it's incredibly smart to be a part of the new, low-carbon economy: it's good business.

GOING GREEN AT THE MOVIES >>>

Last year's catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf and Japan's current tribulations with natural and man-made disasters are periodic, sober warnings of people's tenuous yet vital hold on the environment. Nature nurtures both our physical and artistic instincts. A filmmaker, for instance, looks about and sees Earth as one vast mise-en-scène, its raw materials photographed in endless combinations to suit infinite stories.

The Olympia Film Society's second annual Environmental Film Festival, April 15 - 17, celebrates a few of those stories that carry a unifying message: lean, clean and green, baby.

"I think it's made clear by the number of environmental groups (in town), not just local groups that are part of national organizations and state organizations ... (that) most Olympians are concerned about the environment," says OFS Film Programming Director Helen Thornton.

HOMETOWN FILM CRITIC: Rev. Adam McKinney reviews "Scre4m"

MOVIES WITH DUMB NAMES >>>

The latest installment in the Scream franchise does well to usher the series into the new landscape of horror-littered with torture-porn and cat-voiced Japanese ghost children. Fans of the previous films will likely enjoy Scre4m, though toward the end, the audience gets a little lecturing to in an unpleasantly preachy way with regards to technology and internet fame. It comes off as weirdly pandering for an audience that-if you can say nothing else about them-totally fucking gets it.

VOLCANO MUSIC SECTION: Seapony, Havi Blaze, Yellingham music festival and more …

GOODNESS IN STORE IN PRINT & ONLINE >>>

Is it just me, or are weeks going by faster than ever? It's hard to believe it's already Thursday ... already time for a brand-spankin' new Weekly Volcano music section.

But it's true. I wouldn't lie about what day of the week it is. That'd be dumb.

What isn't dumb is the Volcano's music section this week, packed with musical goodness for you in print and online.

Here's a peak at what you'll find ...

SEAPONY

The cover photo of Seapony's Dreaming single depicts sunshine pouring through a line of evergreen trees - rays of sun so intensely radiant the picture is overtaken by lens flares. It's a potent distillation of the Seapony ethos, and the ethos of bands like them, this idea of a never-ending summer, so light and ebullient that it can almost become overwhelming. - Rev Adam McKinney

HAVI BLAZE

We've already had a bunch of high-profile mixtapes and/or albums drop this year from some of the top Tacoma MC's. One in particular is getting mad spins, critical acclaim and props from heads all over Sea-Tac. I speak of Havi Blaze's solo mixtape, Purple and Gold the Balance. - Josh Rizeberg

YELLINGHAM

In the Spring of last year, a group of Bellingham youth hatched a plan to convert their homes into concert spaces for a gutsy, weekend-long endeavor: the area's first-ever youth-led underground music festival, catering to the community's bevy of hip Western Washington University undergrads and any out-of-towners willing to drive up to Whatcom County to scope it out. - Jason Baxter

ROCKWELL POWERS

Haters will be disappointed to hear that KITBII is another slick, solid outing from Rockwell (real name Zach) who - full disclosure - is a regular Volcano contributor, these days focusing mainly on Tacoma City Council action and local political dealings. - JB

THE WEEKEND HUSTLE: Buddy Guy, Eileen Ivers, Wayzgoose and the boring lives of our writers ...

THE LOWDOWN ON WHAT'S UP THIS WEEKEND >>>

WEATHER REPORT

Friday: Rain, hi 49, lo 38

Saturday: Partly sunny, hi 54, lo 34

Sunday: Partly sunny, hi 52, lo 34

>>> APRIL 15: Buddy Guy

What will you be doing when you're 74 years old? If you're anything like the Weekly Volcano the answer involves copious amounts of Scotch and being dead. Blues legend Buddy Guy, on the other hand, is still cranking out the music at 74 - he recently released a new record, Living Proof. According to hype, the record "takes a look back at (Guy's) remarkable life." Living proof. Get it? Friday, Guy comes to Tacoma and the Pantages Theater. Predictably, it's sold out.

  • Pantages Theater, with Little Bill and the Blue Notes, 7:30 p.m., $45-$75, 901 Broadway, Tacoma, 253.591.5890

>>> SATURDAY, APRIL 16: Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul

Eileen Ivers is legit. She's a Grammy Award winning musician. She starred in Riverdance. Hell, she's even a founding member of Cherish the Ladies. Saturday at the Pantages Theater, Ivers and Immigrant sould will deliver what the pre-show hype calls, "a delirious mix of traditional and original Irish airs, jigs, reels, grooves, songs and stories."

  • Pantages Theater, 7:30 p.m.,$26-$49, 901 Broadway, Tacoma, 253.591.5890

>>> SUNDAY, APRIL 17: Wayzgoose

There aren't enough places in the world where you can watch Tacoma stalwart sweet pea Flaherty drive a steamroller over stuff while simultaneously creating the art of letterpress. The annual Wayzgoose event at King's Books just happens to be one of them. Already in its seventh year (holy crap!), there's a reason Wayzgoose is on the lips of every artful Tacoman this time of year ... and, frankly, it has a lot to do with sweet pea driving a steamroller. Of course, the collection of letterpressers and book artists Wayzgoose brings together doesn't hurt. Check out who will be there here.

  • King's Books, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., no cover, 218 St. Helens Ave., Tacoma, 253.272.8801

>>> WHERE OUR STAFF IS GOING

NIKKI TALOTTA Features Writer
Going with my kiddo to see Alexander on Friday, and going with my hubby to see Cannibal on Sunday. Two things I never get to do - see a theatrical/musical production and go on a date with my husband! Sweet! Perhaps between that and working the bar, I can try not to agonize over whether or not my home loan will go through.

Joe Izenman Theater and Music Writer
Remember how last week was all about cleaning my apartment? I'm sure you do, because I know you pay attention to this stuff. Well guess what? We only cleaned like two rooms. Whoooo! Fortunately it shall be interspersed with the usual Saturday trip to the Proctor Farmer's Market, D&D in a basement, and maybe even Where Sails Meet Rails w/Colonies at Doyle's.

BRETT CHIHON Meat Market Correspondent/Features Writer
Headed to Vanity Nightclub for Latin Night this weekend. This is about my third Latin themed club in the last two months. Que pasa?

CHRISTIAN CARVAJAL: Theater Critic
Amanda and I are celebrating our engagement with a trip to Seattle, starting with the Star Wars exhibit at the Pacific Science Center. It was pricey, but she begged and begged, so what could I do? (In a related note: Squee!)

MATT DRISCOLL: Editor
A rare weekend with zero toddler birthday parties to attend awaits. Looking forward to the Rainiers home opener tomorrow, and a Saturday of shopping for new TVs with my wife, which will inevitably lead to a depressing conversation about why America can't seem to watch TV on anything smaller than 46 inches.

JOANN VARNELL Theater Critic
The only thing planned other than grading papers and playing with my son is attending Tacoma School of the Arts' annual fundraiser - Artrageous. While there I will be decked in my fanciest frock and enjoying the entertainment that the students and John Curley provide.

STEVE DUNKELBERGER Meat Market Photographer
Kiddo weekend of Palm Sunday with Sonoro choir practice for our concert later this month.

JENNIFER JOHNSON Lifestyle writer
Going out for pho at Vein Dong on Friday night. Volunteering to clean-up Pt. Defiance Park for Parks Day Saturday followed by a jaunt out to Gig Harbor to check out the new JW restaurant, and at the recommendation of Chef William at Babblin' Babs I'll buy some meat at Harbor Greens. Sunday, I'm barbecueing with friends after church in Auburn.

Petey's Pub opens on Sixth Avenue

Woof!

DOG. DOG. DOG. >>>

Recently, I infiltrated Dog World.  It was quite simple. I got a dog. Well, I didn't actually get a dog.  My friend asked if I'd house-sit her dog, Mr. Finklepuss, while she went to Mexico.  I said, "si."  She said, "audios." Mr. Finklepuss said, "If you're the guy feeding me, I like you."

And just like that, my life went to the dogs. The book I'm reading is dog-eared to page 89. I now say, "Let sleeping dogs lie."  If this dog-eat-dog world ain't doggone crazy, then it's a bitch.  Last night, I was as sick as a dog after imbibing excessively on hair of the dog. But this morning, I pulled myself up by the bootstraps and said, "Get along little doggie."

And like a Tarantino flick, my dog world has now come full circle (or something). Walking Mr. Finklepuss down Sixth Avenue today, I stumbled upon Petey's Pub, which opened this week. Hot dog! Petey's owner is some guy named Guy, who owns the Garlic Jim's Pizza next door. Basically, Petey's Pub is Garlic Jim's with beer and wine - the food is very similar, if not exact: pizza, wings, sandwiches and salads. There's even a window cutout between the two joints for easy serving.

Oh, yeah. The dog part. Petey's Pub is named after Guy's dog, Petey. There's even painted paws on the ceiling and floor in Petey's honor.

I didn't have time to dig in because Mr. Finklepuss was barking up a storm outside the joint. I'll be back, but not until I leave Dog World.

COMMENT OF THE DAY: Kobe Bryant gets booed

ONLINE CHATTER >>>

Today's comment of the day comes from Nikita in response to the most recent Cup Check column by Matt Driscoll, in which - among other things - he discusses Kobe Bryant's televised use of a homophobic slur.

Nikita writes,

Yes, speaking of alleged womanizers... Kobe Bryant apologized, saying that his comment didn't actually reflect how he feels about the GLBT community. Yeah. Somehow I think it might be different if someone had yelled the N-word at a black ref. I've just about had it up to here with this continual abuse of words that are intended to describe the GLBT community - not to mention the way celebrities get away with everything.
Here's the rest of what I had to say on it: goddessblue.wordpress.com/2011/04/14/kobe-uses-the-f-word/

5 Things To Do Today: Monster Trucks Show, Barrio Fiesta, Hollywood Allstarz and more ...

FRIDAY, APRIL 15, 20011 >>>

1. The Monster Truck Show rolls into the Puyallup Spring Fair bringing with it some 30 tons of flying truck. You know the basic idea here - overgrown toys flying over dirt and crushing old junked sedans. The pit party runs 4-6 p.m., followed by the 8 p.m. battle.

2. The Post Pop/Pop Art Exhibition, put on by The Gallery at Tacoma Community College and gallery coordinator Jennifer Olson-Rudenko, is a hell of an idea. The exhibit, which is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., is a collection of submissions - from professional artists and local school children alike - celebrating the time-honored practice of co-opting commercial art for "high art" purposes. Read Alec Clayton's review of the show here.

3. Rick Lawson says that after returning home from combat duty in Balad, Iraq in 2004-2005 he had a hard time answering questions from friends about what the experience had been like. He took a humanities course at Western Washington University in which they studied the 11th century Bayeux Tapesty, which portrayed the Battle of Hastings. That study was the inspiration for his War Experience Project on display at 906 Broadway as part of Spaceworks Tacoma. Lawson holds an open house for the show from 3-8 p.m.

4. In the tradition of barrio fiestas in the Philippines, Saint Martin's University invites the public to share in the celebration of its second annual Barrio Fiesta at 5 p.m. Expect Filipino heritage through song, dance and a dinner featuring a traditional menu.

5. The Backstage Bar & Grill on Tacoma's Sixth Avenue hosts a Bikers Against Child Abuse benefit featuring the Hollywood Allstarz beginning at 9 p.m. Expect a raffle and drink specials.

Today In Sadness: Proctor District

AS THE SLICE TURNS >>>

Yes, the above scene we snapped this morning on Proctor Street is certainly sad.

However, the real sad news our of the Proctor District is the closing of Nick-N-Willy's Pizza.

That slice you use to grab bore the show at Blue Mouse will need to come from somewhere else.
