‘Oly the Lonely’ celebrates sorrow and offers chance at coupledom

SINGLE AND SAD? >>>

So what, you might be asking yourself, is Josh Anderson up to this week? It's been a week or two since the Volcano has reported anything on this one-man entertainment dynasty.

As your reporter on the Anderson beat, I can tell you that it's something new. It's "Oly the Lonely," a karaoke show - sort of - and a singles night - sort of - with Anderson and frequent collaborators Christina Collins and Lauren O'Nell.

Friday, July 8, the trio will serve up an evening of songs about lonely hearts, with - contrary to karaoke convention - live accompaniment by Anderson. And while it's ostensibly a night for singles, the Facebook event page clarifies: "Coupled people are welcome; just don't rub it in (unless you get a sext indicating otherwise)."

"There's no script, and it's not at all funny, which some people might see as a departure," Collins says. "But we're talking about Joni Mitchell and Radiohead and Sam Cooke, and I don't really see how to make to make those things funny without being mean."

There'll be lots of blues and torch songs, plus such numbers as "Mad World" and "I Can't Make You Love Me." "All songs that twist the knife, you know?" Collins says.

The night of live and planned entertainment by singers with more experience than your typical karaoke crooner is from 9 to 11 p.m. at the Urban Onion, 116 Legion Way S.E., Olympia. There's no cover charge.

[Urban Onion, Oly the Lonely, Friday, July 8, 9 - 11 p.m., no cover, 116 Legion Way S.E., Olympia, 360.943.9242]

Concert Alert: Grit City Fest makes an announcement

Holy crap! Was it really 2007 when Seaweed played Bumbershoot? It will be lovely to have the fellas together again for a T-town show in August. Photography by Pappi Swarner

SEAWEED! >>>

The second annual Grit City Fest is set to go off on Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma Aug. 27-28. A full on music and arts throwdown in the vein of SXSW is the goal of organizers Tre'dmarks Music Group.

The word has been quiet out of the Tre'dmarks camp until yesterday when GCF founder Q-Dot let loose the first batch of bands headed to their main stage at Hell's Kitchen, which includes Ohio rhyme spitter Stalley and Tacoma rockers Seaweed. RAINIERS MINUTE: Kyle Seager takes his Silver Bullet Band to the Big Leagues

BUT WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON OUR NIGHT MOVES? >>>

LAST MINUTE UPDATE: In late-breaking, heart-stopping, huge bummer news, Weekly Volcano's newest crush, Kyle Seager, has just been promoted to the Seattle Mariners. Along with rendering much of the below blog out of date, Seager has also broken our hearts. Here we were, twelve games into a budding relationship, and wammo: he's gone. Gone without so much as a Dear John letter on the dresser. Once again we're left sobbing, forced to pick up the pieces of what could have been a great relationship.

Tear, sniffle. This one's tough. We better shut off cellphone before we make any calls we regret.

After nearly a week-long sabbatical where we thought more about beers, brats and bikinis then we did about baseball, we've returned.

Of course, getting back into the swing of things is hard when you've missed a week's worth of ballgames. A week of Tacoma Rainiers' (42-44) ballgames that featured the return of Mike Carp, a clutch performance by Josh Lueke and crapload of holiday fireworks.  We missed a week of ballgames that included a competent performance by starting pitcher Luke French, the continued success of newbie Kyle Seager and a game where Charlie Haeger, once again, issued some walks.  A week of baseball that saw the Rainiers climb steadily towards .500. We missed a week of ballgames that helped more reputable bloggers run circles around us coverage- wise.

Yep, we missed a lot of things in the last week. Most importantly, the ballgames.

But lets not dwell on what we've missed. Let's focus on what's ahead.

Tomorrow, myself and maybe a couple of other Weekly Volcano staffers will be heading to Cheney Stadium to participate in the Tasty Thursday festivities. This effectively means you could see some of the best Rainiers Minute coverage of the season. We're talking fan interviews. We're talking a post-game blog. We're talking up-to-the-minute tweets. We're talking me spending way too much money on beer. We're talking making faces at Mike Curto in the pressbox. We're talking everything short of player interviews, a privilege long lost to us after an unfortunate incident in the locker room....

But still! The Weekly Volcano live at Cheney Stadium. You can't get more exciting than that.

Notes ...

-As mentioned above, Weekly Volcano favorite Mike Carp is back in a Tacoma Rainiers' uniform. Now before you get too excited and, say, order up another Carp tattoo, we have to tell you something. We here at the Volcano had a long discussion on how to handle the return of Carp. After some serious thought, we've decided to downplay his return to Tacoma.

Carp is a damn, damn good player. A damn good player who some argue wasn't given enough playing time up in Seattle. While it warms our hearts to see him once again swinging a bat in Cheney, trotting out homeruns in Cheney, laughing and lovin' in Cheney, we here at the Weekly Volcano choose not to get excited.  We think it's only a matter of time before another call-up. And we can't let ourselves fall in love again. A breakup like the last one could kill us.

-Did you hear? Mike Carp hit a homerun in his first at-bat back in a Rainiers uniform! He was also ejected from a game! OMG, OMG, OM- No. Sorry. We've promised ourselves we wouldn't do this. Enough Carp talk. Let's move our attention to other dreamboats. Mainly, Kyle Seager, who is hitting a mind-blowing .455 in 55 at bats.

-Conor Dowley of the Mariners Farm Review recently posted his list of the top twenty prospects in the Mariners' system. Five Rainiers players made the list: Kyle Seager, Blake Beavan, Alex Liddi, Dan Cortes and Josh Lueke. While the statistics Dowley uses to compose this list are surely over our heads, we do appreciate the breakdown. We also appreciate Dowley's honesty when he says, "Would I normally think of Alex Liddi, Blake Beavan and Erasmo Ramirez (AA) as top-ten guys in a system? Hell no." We know it hurts, Rainiers fans. But at least he's honest.

-In more general news, the Rainiers are hanging in there. Eighty-six games into the season, the Rainiers sit at second place in the PCL Pacific North division, a daunting but not insurmountable nine games behind the first place Reno Aces. Nine games is a lot, but there's still some baseball left to be played. Plus, it heats up like a mo' fo' down in Reno this time of year, so the Aces are sure to grow sluggish.

Tonight is the final game of the series against the Colorado Sky Sox. The game starts at 6:05 p.m. Tomorrow is Tasty Thursday. An extra special Tasty Thursday because the Weekly Volcano will be on hand to booze and cruise. See you tomorrow, baseball fans.

COMMENT OF THE DAY: Behind Bars - Fourth of July in Tacoma edition

ONLINE CHATTER >>>

Today's comment comes from Alli Leaphart, in response to Nikki Talotta's most recent Behind Bars SPEW post, titled "Flash-back."

Leaphart writes,

It's the 4th of July down on the Tacoma waterfront..Freedom Fair!! It was sunny and ya know what happens when young men and women drink all day is the sun...they get a little stupid and this leads me to this story.
So two guys walk into the Harbor Lights bar , one without a shirt. I say put on a shirt if your wanting to drink in the bar.. He keeps glancing down at his friend's feet...so I lean over the bar to see if his buddy is wearing shoes...everything seems to be in order..the guy puts on his shirt and I ask them for their ID's. While they were fumbling around for their ID's , my cocktail server called me over and she says.."Umm Alli...that dude doesn't have any pants on". So I'm thinking...where the Hell is he keeping his ID, amonst other things. Needless to say..they didn't get served. So my question is...did he leave home without pants or did he 'shart' his pants and ditched them?? He had a long sports jersey on so I thought he had really short shorts on...and that was freaky in its own way. He was walking around 20,00 people with his junk swinging in the wind...Poor Jodi had to
see him bend over ...showing his 4th of July glory!!

This week’s Volcano music section: Fred Diezil, Jimmi Davies and Resident Kings, VIII Days Clean and more …

MUSICAL GOODNESS IN PRINT & ONLINE >>>

Sure, there were plenty of distractions this week. There was the Fourth of July holiday, which made Monday and a good chunk of Tuesday a wash when it comes to productivity. There was the construction crew redoing the roof at Weekly Volcano world headquarters, pounding away, and forcing editor Matt Driscoll to relocate his desk to the break room. And there was the complete lack of air-conditioning throughout the building thanks to said roof construction. It's been hell.

Yes, the odds were stacked against us. But- unsurprisingly - the Weekly Volcano once again delivered in the clutch with a music section jam packed with goodness.

Here's a sneak peek at the sonic awesomeness in store.

LUTHIERS GONE WILD

Lutherie, for the uninitiated, is the craft of guitar-building, as well as the making of other stringed instruments such as violins and lutes. One who takes part in lutherie is known as a luthier. The Guild of American Luthiers holds a convention at Pacific Lutheran University every three years - and if you think I'm not going to get confused typing all of those "luth-" words, you've got another thing coming.

What began as a kind of a lark in 1972 - at the prompting of a classified ad - has grown into the largest community of luthiers in the world, at an astonishing 3,600 members across 40 countries. - Rev. Adam McKinney

FRED DIEZEL & MORE SOUTH SOUND HIP-HOP

Another artist to look out for is Fred Diezil, making national noise thanks to winning a songwriting contest for the coveted national Coast 2 Coast Mixtape series. Ya can check out his winning song, titled "Winter's My Summer," on iTunes or Amazon. Remember Skee-Lo, the "I wish I was a little bit taller" guy? Well, Diezil's opening for him July 17 at The Backstage Bar and Grill in Tacoma. - Josh Rizeberg

JIMMI DAVIES TALKS RESIDENT KINGS

When he's not pounding copper into functional art, vacationing on secret Mexican getaways or blaring sax on stage with local legends the Dirty Birds, Jimmi Davies is working it out with his latest band, Resident Kings. Lucky for us, he had some time to talk about this brand-spanking-new Olympia supergroup. - Nikki Talotta

VIII DAYS CLEAN

Besides the obvious rock, which jives nicely with the KISW set, Tacoma's VIII Days Clean sells itself on its members' troubled past - vocalist guitarist Ron Walvatne, drummer Jeff Welch, bassist Cody Johnson and guitarist Gary Cooper have all battled drug addiction in their lives, and have built this band - at least in part - to wage a sonic war of sorts against their former way of life. Friday, VIII Days Clean celebrates the release of Parasite, the band's fourth album, with an all-ages throwdown at Louie G's in Fife. - Matt Driscoll

This week’s Volcano arts section: Art on the Ave., James Tucker & Andrea Trenbeath, Susan Christian …

ANOTHER CRAMMED-ASS WEEK >>>

Like almost every week in the South Sound, and certainly every week of the all-too-short summer in the South Sound, there are art happenings and opportunities galore this week. The Art on the Ave festival will once again fill Tacoma's Sixth Avenue with art of all kinds - truly something for all of the senses - and that's jus the start.

Here are a few teases from this week's Volcano arts section.

FEATURE: ART ON THE AVE

"Art on the Ave is in its 13th year, so it's one of Tacoma's biggest and best festivals," says festival coordinator Angela Jossy. "It's known for its eclectic and inclusive nature."
Of course, this is an art festival and you can, above all, expect to find art on tap. But the artwork here is not limited to canvas work or sculpture or other things you might only find in a museum. "There will be ALL kinds of art," says Jossy. - Kristin Kendle

FEATURE: JAMES TUCKER & ANDREA TRENBEATH

Together, Trenbeath and Tucker share skill sets and knowledge with each other, and deliver artwork with a collaborative twist, which most recently meant Tucker taking Trenbeath's werewolf sketches and putting his own slant on them. Trenbeath's werewolves are, frankly, amazing - bold lines and a viciousness rarely seen in the realms of fine art. They make my episodes of True Blood seem full of puppies and kittens. Tucker's tweaks give these beasts a robotic edge. These pieces were the focus of their work at Tacoma Art Place and lead directly into their work at Art on the Ave this week. - Kristin Kendle

VISUAL EDGE: SUSAN CHRISTIAN AT CHILDHOOD'S END GALLERY

I've been keeping up with Susan Christian's career for more than 20 years, and during that time I have watched her art change so gradually that it's like watching a mountain grow. I think she has finally reached her maturity as a painter. Her latest works - simple, bare-bones, abstract paintings of doorways and windows and corners of starkly empty rooms - are by far the best I have seen from her yet. - Alec Clayton
