THIS WEEK >>>

THING: Delicious handmade caramels

Created by: Clay Richart

He wields: A bad-ass mustachio

Because: He's a bad-ass candy man

Who can: Get away with a mustachio

Whereas: If I didn't pluck my rogue chin hairs

He might: Have some competition

You now think: I'm hot

Because: You love a bearded lady

Let's just focus: On the caramels

BOOZE UPDATE >>>

When Bobble Tiki was a tiny tyke, Father Tiki taught him an important lesson. Father Tiki said ''Bobble, every rose has its thorn. Just like every night has its dawn. Just like every cowboy sings a sad, sad, song.''

Wait a minute, those are also the lyrics from a Poison song.

This explains why Father Tiki's talk about the birds and the bees included multiple references to the phrase "Unskinny Bop."

It's only appropriate, then, that Bobble Tiki will be upfront for hair-metal rockers Poison, Motley Crue and the New York Dolls Friday night at the Tacoma Dome for more fatherly advice ... and Aqua Net to impressionable young fans.

Booze Update

The Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall will open its beer garden at 5 p.m. Expect $4 happy hour specials from 5-6 p.m. including Bud Light, Bud Light Lime, house wines, Pink Lemon Bombs, Los Cabos Margaritas and Corral Reef Mai Tais.

The McKinley's Grill Restaurant inside the Dome will also open at 5 p.m. with $3 happy hour specials available from 5-6 p.m. Click here for a free appetizer coupon. No reservations accepted, seating is first come, first serve.

By the way, there's limited $25 cash only parking in Tacoma Dome lots.

Motley Crue, Poison, The New York Dolls

Friday, Aug. 12, 7 p.m., $25-$95 at Ticketmaster

COMMENT OF THE DAY: Potential Northern spot a no-go

ONLINE CHATTER >>>

Today's comment of the day comes from Kelsey Smith, chiming in with an update on last week's cover story, Truth about Northern.

Smith writes,

Sadly, the space on State Street fell through. We're still looking for a new venue - all leads in the downtown Olympia area are welcome!

Weekly Volcano wrote: "Just as we're about to send this story to our eagerly awaiting editor, we get word that Luz‘s finger-crossing has paid off. Provided there are no issues with city inspections, Northern will be in its new home, 112 State St., by Sept 1."

That's not good.

5 Things To Do Today: Warehouse's last summer series, Blueberry Festival, Whoa Dizzy, Big Friction Jam and more ...

Elk & Boar performs tonight inside a house in Tacoma.

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 10 >>>

1. The Warehouse presents two Doe Bay Festival bands - Ok Sweetheart and Elk & Boar - in an intimate setting - as a prefunk for the Orcas Island music fest. Plus Charlie Parr arrives all the way from Minnesota. And, Jessie Fouts will dazzle with her spoken word. The show is at the Nurture Healing Center (739 St. Helens, Tacoma) from 8-11:30 p.m.

2. It's certainly easy to get caught up in a midweek routine. Another Wednesday lunch, another Lean Cuisine in the microwave, another lunch in the employee lounge eating out of a plastic tray starring at the office vacation planner with zero vacation days listed under your name. Why not head over to Pacific Lutheran University for its annual Blueberry Festival to help you break the cycle (oh for crick's sake, just add some vacation days to your name already). Enjoy blueberry desserts while listening to the Celtic-irish band Mooncoyne from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Red Square by Eastvold Auditorium.

3. Wildside Wine off Sixth Avenue hosts an Airfield Estates Winery tasting from 4-7 p.m. Six bottles will be popped.

4. Olympia jazz, rock and pop band Whoa Dizzy will perform in Sylvester Park from 7-8 p.m. There's a raffle for two outdoor folding chairs.

5. The famous Big Friction Jam will go down at 9 p.m. inside Jazzbones.

TONIGHT: Knowledge Night at Doyle's

Jeff Ross, Jessica Farr and Lean Williams applied their knowledge last Wednesday at Doyle's Public House. Photo credit: Steve Dunkelberger

PHOTO HOT SPOT >>>

Doyle's Public House in Tacoma's Stadium District mixes it up Wednesday nights. First, if the Sounder's game is on, the place is packed. Then the info geeks arrive for the Knowledge Night trivia games. Toss in the regulars, and thrill seekers trying to nab the last shot of a Jameson bottle in hopes of winning a trip for two to Ireland - and the crowd is complete.

Last Wednesday photographer Steve Dunkelberger dropped by Doyle's. A few of his shots are posted below.

Vote for Tacoman Larry Huffines on HGTV!

See! Larry Huffines has even been to the Alamo. Vote for Larry!

TACOMA REPRESENT >>>

Twenty Americans from across the country have nailed the chance to be crowned the "handiest of them all" in the new HGTV series, All American Handyman. One of the contestants is Tacoma artist, filmmaker, music promoter and apparently handyman Larry Huffines.

Through Oct. 12, America may vote for the best All American Handyman. C'mon South Sound, let's vote for Larry! Click here to vote.

From HGTV's website:

The goal of the series: to find America's best handyman (or handywoman), the one with real skill, integrity and the right stuff to impress the judges. To avoid elimination, contestants must showcase their abilities under the watchful gaze of HGTV's celebrity judges Mike Holmes, Holmes on Homes and Scott McGillivray, Income Property plus a secret weekly judge. All 20 contestants have proven they've got what it takes but only one will walk away with the coveted title of "All American Handyman," and a significant prize package.

5 Things To Do Today: UMF spaghetti feed, Pierce County Fair, Heretic the Heathen and more ...

SweetKiss Momma loves spaghetti ... and to rock.

THURSDAY, AUG. 11, 2011 >>>

1. It's hard to go wrong with great rock ‘n' roll and great spaghetti. We're pretty sure there's actually a commandment to that effect. From 5:30-10 p.m., as a fundraiser for next week's Underwater Music Festival, SweetKiss Momma and Perry Acker will be at Louie G's in Fife for an all-ages throwdown that also benefits the Girls Campaign (girlscampaign.com). This one's a no-brainer.

2. The yearly celebration of rural life, agriculture and good old family values hit Graham's Frontier Park from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. That's right! It's Pierce County Fair time featuring food, entertainment, attractions and overalls.

4. The routine is simple. You look through the songbooks scattered around the joint, write down a song title and your name on a piece of paper, and hand it to the deejay. In a few minutes, you'll hear him say, "Dave, c'mon down," and the fantasy begins. You're Bob Dylan or Shania Twain - or whoever the hell you want to be. It's cheap therapy, if nothing else. Thursday nights at the Loose Wheel Bar & Grill - voted "Best Sports Bar" by Weekly Volcano readers - the karaoke routine becomes more complex when the entire joint ties one on.

5. There was a time when MC battles were a huge part of determining how good of an overall rapper you were. That time has passed, but not completely. Although battles may not be as popular as they once were, Olympia rapper Heretic the Heathen still continues to grow - both as a battle rapper and as a solid music maker. Heretic has been circulating in the battle scene since 2002, and as of now is one of the top battlers in the Olympia area - crushing opponents any chance he gets. Heretic is set to release a new mixtape, Writer's Block, at 9 p.m. at The Royal Lounge in Olympia. Read Nic Leonard's full story on Heretic here.
