THIRD THURSDAY: You must investigate this Zen Art©

"Forgiveness": Mixed media triptych with recycled copper, paper, etc., by Nola Tresslar

THE ZEN OF FLOW >>>

Who really knows jack about Zen?

Nola Tresslar knows. In fact, she grabbed the concept, applied it to her art and attached a copyright thingy to it. She calls it Zen Art© - artwork created in reverse on Plexiglas or glass - often incorporating natural elements, such as pressed flowers and leaves.

Mysterious.

Tresslar also creates mixed media, collage, printmaking and sumi-e artwork.

Her full spectrum of artistic talent will be on display at flow Gallery & Studio, with an opening reception during Third Thursday Artwork. The show appropriately has been titled "Full Spectrum."

There's something going on with this Zen Art© reverse thing, something powerful and clandestine. You must infiltrate flow gallery and report back with her secrets. You must tell us of all her inner machinations. We are trusting you with this reconnaissance mission - just you.

Plan Ahead: Beer and breakfast pairing

YES WE WROTE "BEER AND BREAKFAST" >>>

Over in the "Restaurants" section on this website the lovely Jennifer Johnson posted a little ditty on Jake's Bar and Bistro's "Dogfish Breakfast for Dinner" going down this Saturday. Dogfish Head Craft Brewery will visit the Steilacoom pub with crates and crates of its unusual beers loaded with ingredients such as juniper, honey, grape and lemon grass. Check out her story here.

One of the beers Dogfish will bring is its Sah'tea, a rye-brewed beer based on a 9th century Finnish brew, which will be paired with Grand Marnier syrup-topped spiced French toast stuffed with Gruyere cheese and black tea smoked bacon (cured in-house).

So nice.

Anyway, we found a couple videos by Dogfish explaining the story behind the story of Sah'tea beer. Enjoy.

COMMENT OF THE DAY: Camp Nola Tresslar

ONLINE CHATTER >>>

Today's comment comes from Paula Tutmarc-Johnson, former owner of the beloved Two Vaults Gallery in Tacoma, in response to our post on Nola Tresslar's Zen Art©. The post drew many a favorable comment toward Tresslar.

Tutmarc-Johnson writes,

It is wonderful to see this column giving due to one of Tacoma's truly "fine" artists. I have seen the work. Nola is one of a few Tacoma artists that have graced the south end with their exceptional work for sometime. Her work has been well loved here and far beyond her home area for a while now. Lovely to bring this refined and thoughtful work to the attention of the locals.

COMMENT OF THE DAY: Chicago rocked!

ONLINE CHATTER >>>

Today's comment comes from Rock Oldenburg who after seeing the band Chicago perform with the Tacoma Symphony at the Puyallup Fair, searched our event listing for the show and posted a review.

Oldenburg writes,

Great Concert - the Symphony shone prior to Chicago taking the stage. Symphony helped fill out the melodic hits of the group but was less noticeable in the full-on rock hits which were blasted from the stage. The group was superb; the Symphony was superb - the concert was a wonderful stroll through the 70's and 80's. Chicago has not lost its touch for either music and harmony or showmanship. Total thumbs up experience - and we can be incredibly proud of our Tacoma Symphony, they shine at every concert! Their local season begins in October. If you haven’t attended a Symphony concert in a while I can highly recommend the experience. We are extremely lucky to have a full, professional Symphony Orchestra that calls Tacoma its home!
