True Tacoman: Final answer

DO YOU KNOW YOUR TACOMA HISTORY ... AND LOVE FOOD? >>

Foodcaching is a new smart phone app alerting customers of awesome food deals at 15 restaurants in the greater Tacoma area. You may download the app for free on your iPhone and Android here.

The Weekly Volcano teamed up with Foodcaching for the True Tacoman game. For the last two months on Spew, we posted Tacoma history trivia provided by the Washington State History Museum. If you knew the answer, you ran to one of the 15 participating restaurants, came clean with answer and received points on your Foodcaching app, which you downloaded free here.

The person with the most points by Dec. 31, 2011 will be crowned the True Tacoman and be flooded with various food prizes.

We have hundreds of folks tally up the scores and will announce the winner soon.

Friday's True Tacoman trivia answer

Before we announce the winner of the True Tacoman game, we must come clean with the answer to the final question of the game, which we posted Friday. We asked:

Annie and Fanny are:

  • A) A double drink served at the Tacoma Hotel in the 1940s;
  • B) Two statues at the north end of Wright Park named for Annie Wright and Fannie Paddock;
  • C) Nicknames of the wives of Chief Marcelles Spot.

You spent the last days of the game telling the restaurants listed below Annie and Fanny are the two statues at the north end of Wright Park named after Annie Wright and Fannie Paddock – and, thereby you scored points on the Foodcaching app.

Stay tuned for the announcement of the True Tacoman champion.

Oh, you can download the free app here.

3. Lakewood Pub and Grill has taken the bar term "meat market" literally with a meat raffle every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., when patrons drop $10 for 15 tickets to win premium cuts courtesy of Stewart's Meat Market ... or a $25 gas card. Choice wins include stacks of deli cut bacon and steaks, although the jerky packs are bonus. See the meat here.

4. The Red Room all-ages venue is just rocking it. It's the busiest joint in town with what seems to be a show every night. At 6 p.m. Placeholder, Four Minute Mile and Rookie Town bring it.

VOLCANO MUSIC: Dick Dale, Jay Barz, Corin Tucker Band, Gorilla v. Girl Trouble and more …

THIS WEEK IN MUSIC >>>

The Weekly Volcano never sleeps. It's true ... or very close to true.

We average only a few hours of shut-eye a night, be it because we're compulsive insomniacs who stay up long hours watching Battlestar Galactica, or simply because there's just so much to do.

Included in all this doing? As always, another shining installment of the Weekly Volcano music section.

We wouldn't lie. You better believe we pumped out another stellar Weekly Volcano music section - your every-Thursday chance at the best in local music coverage.

Here's a look at the sonic goodness coming at you in print and online in this week's Volcano ...

FEATURE: DICK DALE RETURNS TO TACOMA

Dick Dale created the surf guitar sound. This is a statement that is irrefutable (a rare commodity in music). As it's been documented and retold, Dick Dale began by playing the drums and then transferred this percussive quality to the electric guitar - the result being the breakneck strumming and picking that has become irrevocably associated with surf guitar. As a style, surf guitar has endured and informed generations of guitarists, from heavy metal to garage rock and every rock-minded station in between.

"I was raised on big band music, and Hank Williams and country music," says Dale. "I never took a lesson. When I play, I play by ear." ... -- Rev. Adam McKinney

HIP-HOP: JAY BARZ & MORE

Also dropping last month was the official video for "Match," from Jay Barz's new project, 420 Experienced. Again, YouTube it. It's a posse-cut featuring Barz, Tacoma's Partners In Crhyme and Humboldt's Potluck. It's a hip-hop, rock, stoner hybrid of a song. One thing's for certain, though: all MCs spit their verses tight and proper. It's got the type of energy and party vibe that most stoner songs miss. ... -- Josh Rizeberg

WE RECOMMEND: CORIN TUCKER BAND

... Stripping her sound bare and rebuilding it in a more mature mold did Tucker quite well. In her new, more muted mode, it's easier to see the innate talent and charm she has. And Sleater-Kinney or no, I think it's a safe bet that Tucker still brings it like hell, live. - Rev. AM

EXTRA CREDIT: GORILLA PRODUCTIONS V. GIRL TROUBLE

Good things come to those who wait.

Or, in Girl Trouble's case, good news has come to those who waited - specifically news that the lawsuit hanging over the band's head in Ohio for almost two years has officially been dismissed. Judge Joan Synenberg ruled Nov. 22 to toss a lawsuit levied against the band by Ohio music promotion company Gorilla Productions, based on a motion filed by Girl Trouble 19 months ago arguing a lack of personal jurisdiction over the band in Ohio.

The motion worked. It just took a while. - Matt Driscoll

>>> SUNDAY,JAN. 8: BUMP KITCHEN

Bobble Tiki likes to say he put the “bump” in Bump Kitchen — always pointing toward his lap and doing one of those pelvic thrust moves with a wink. Typically, Bobble Tiki does this at Bump Kitchen shows, when trying to lure unsuspecting middle aged women drunk on white wine on to the dance floor. Sometimes it even works. At a Bump Kitchen show, there’s plenty of action like this to be had. Packing the dance floor with a body grabbing, booty shaking mix of groovin’ favorites and bumpin’ originals, Bump Kitchen is, like, the party band for the middle age club scene — a cougar heavy, expensive jeans wearing, tanned and trimmed mob that should never be taken lightly. Experience the magic this Sunday at the Spar in Old Town Tacoma.

  • The Spar, 9 p.m., NC, 2121 N. 30th St., Tacoma, 253.627.8215

>>> WHAT SOME OF OUR STAFF MEMBERS ARE UP TO

STEVE DUNKELBERGER Meat Market Photographer
I'll be kicking it with the kiddos this weekend, which will likely mean a Mythbusters marathon on the couch followed by the creation of a Capt. America cake for a birthday party on Saturday for my pa and maybe a movie of some sort tossed in for good measure. There might also be a walk around the Nisqually Delta just to make sure we enjoy the sun... Oh wait, never mind. I'm in Washington.

CHRISTIAN CARVAJAL Theater Critic
I plan to read part of one book and write part of another.

.

JENNIFER JOHNSON Food & Lifestyles Writer
Homework.

.

JOANN VARNELL Theater Critic
Thankfully, I've got nothing on the agenda this Friday or Saturday. Hopefully I'll be able to finish the skirt I've been working on for the last several months and maybe catch a nap or two. On Sunday I will be at Urban Grace singing with my old band.

REV. ADAM MCKINNEY Music & Film Writer
I don't have any plans for the weekend, but here's a cheap pop: I will be doing my second guest DJ set at the weekly DJ Melodica-helmed musical revue at Magoo's Annex, Micro Mondays. I go by DJ Pocket Square, and there will be live musical stuffness supplied by N. Dybevik and Porch Grapes.

NIKKI TALOTTA Features Writer
Prepping my family for next weekends Family Feud audition! We've got to figure out our outfits and where we're going to stand and what we'd say to the savvy Steve Harvey if we made it on the show...all that good stuff...Go team Talotta!

ALEC CLAYTON Visual Arts Critic/Writer
PFLAG Sunday, no other plans, but I'm sure we'll find something to do.
