>>> VOTING CLOSED FOR MARCH 18 <<<
Favorites or underdogs, fancy restaurants or dive bars, it's all the same. In the end, they all have one chance to crack an egg that can take the prize.
Here were the match-ups:
Puget Sound Pizza (Tacoma) vs. The Spar (Tacoma)
The Harvester (Tacoma)vs. The Hub (Tacoma)
A Renaissance Cafe (Tacoma) vs. Bite Restaurant (Tacoma)
Southern Kitchen (Tacoma) vs. Dirty Oscar's Annex (Tacoma)
In the battle of Tacoma favorites, Puget Sound Pizza edged out The Spar with 51.2 percent of the votes. Could the fact The Spar partied it up on St. Patrick's Day affected its focus? Whatever, what's done is done. Puget Sound Pizza moves to the next round. The Spar made it through the Great Depression. It's tough. They'll have breakfast ready for you today as usual.
Flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, eggs, milk, butter: Pancakes sound easy enough, but alas, they're not. We came across two particularly good versions at the Harvester and The Hub. Yesterday, voters agreed with our findings - The Hub won with 50.5 percent of the votes. 50.5 percent! The Harmon conglomerate restaurant now moves on to battle Puget Sound Pizza's stack.
Go local. Yesterday, the little guy, A Renaissance Cafe walked all over the fancy schmancy Hotel Murano and its Bite Restaurant grabbing 69 percent of the votes. A Renaissance Cafe will need to keep limber for its second round opponent. It will be the battle of its life.
Last, Dirty Oscar's Annex on Sixth Avenue put the hurt on Southern Kitchen capturing 65 percent of the votes. It's a given the line outside DOA is all a flutter with the news of the win. We expect many DOA customers will celebrate with a big ol' plate of elk hash.
Let's take a look at the stack. The following are advancing to the next round:
The daily breakfast battles here on Spew are sponsored by Shakabrah Java on Tacoma's Sixth Avenue.
OK, let's check out today's First Round breakfast battles. Vote for one breakfast joint per battle. Voting for today's breakfast battles ends at 11:45 p.m.
Game 1: The Bair Bistro (1617 Lafayette St., Steilacoom) vs. Pine Cone Cafe (7912 27th St. W., University Place)
Game 2: Knapp's Restaurant (2707 N. Proctor, Tacoma) vs. Affairs Cafe & Bakery (2811 Bridgeport Way W., University Place)
Game 3: Moon Rise Cafe (6020 Main St. SW, Lakewood) vs. Mandolin Cafe (3923 S. 12th St., Tacoma)
Game 4: Taqueria El Antojo (5502 Orchard St. W., University Place) vs. Old Milwaukee Cafe (3102 Sixth Ave., Tacoma)
>>> Join us at 6 p.m. Monday, April 2 at the Meconi's Pub in downtown Tacoma for the Official Tournament of Breakfast Party - our winner will be announced during halftime of the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship game.

DOA has the best breakfast in the 253!

The comments for DOA must be from the staff. I have been there twice now and both times the service was terrible, dishes were dirty, and once they even served me ROTTEN food.

Go Boxcar!!
We were there this morning, & the corned beef & hash is excellent.
Loving the tart homemade raspberry jam.

The boxcar grill at the "square" has the best chicken fried steak. It is not a frozen whatever, it is a real steak! check them out if you haven't already. You ownt be sorry.

Go Boxcar!! Go Boxcar!! We ate there this morning & this is our NEW FAVORITE breakfast joint.

I was skeptical about the boxcar grill because I read the review that was written about them here online at the Volcano. Let me tell you I am so GLAD my friend convinced me to try them out, that review must have been an "off day" for them that day. The food at Boxcar is GREAT & the service is fast, & efficient.

Get down to the boxcar grill & try them out if you havent already. Everything I have had there has been wonderful & yummy. The servers are friendly, the food comes out to you in a timely manner, & if that doesnt do it for you , everything is fresh & homemade.

At Dirty Oscar's Annex, we receive our produce and all food items on a bi-weekly basis. We run out of stuff regularly and have to hit the grocery store. It's about as fresh as you can get it in the winter. By the way, we support local businesses and shop at the Tacoma Food Coop a lot. Sorry that person didn't enjoy themselves. Odd comment about the rotten food...just don't see how it's possible.
